map, i agree with you that it's an extremely weak one step (though it would have a substantial material impact on many people's lives - just not necessarily a game-changing one in most cases). i just found table's "i have no confidence..." post sort of closed-off, and basically wanted to pin it with a "okay, so if it actually does happen, will you come back and revise this post at all?" i guess it's a good thing ILX does not have a reminder bot though.

He has competition, but Rob Portman might be the dumbest senator in that hallowed chamber.

Senator Tommy Tuberman seems like the newest champion.

MASSIVE Ron Johnson erasure right here.

Doctor Casino, I'll revise my take somewhat, but only insofar as granting that these *absolutely craven ghouls* gave their constituents that *fucking pittance* instead of giving everyone below a certain income level *$2000 a month as long as the pandemic lasts*, which is the only sensible, empathetic, and moral thing to do. But the United States is not a sensible, empathetic, or moral country.

We’ll get the $1400 because even the Democrats can’t screw it up that badly.

Table starts from the premise that *all* politicians (all of them!) are actively uninterested in helping "us common peasants." There is certainly a valid critique of the distorted incentive structure in U.S. electoral politics that too often prioritizes the interests of the donor class. But it's hard for me to look at someone like Rep. Lauren Underwood, a former nurse, and think "She doesn't give a shit about her constituents."

@ table - fair enough!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 25 January 2021 17:00 (five years ago)

What are the odds Portman is replaced by a former football coach? I’d say....quite good.

Sam Weller, Monday, 25 January 2021 17:18 (five years ago)

Definitely excited about the prospect of a Congress filled with gun toting conspiracy theory nutjobs, retired football coaches and stolen valor asshats.

somewhat heartened if milo thinks so but i have my doubts

this is a silly counterargument as these are structural issues. table's critique isn't "valid" or "too often" it's simply "reality" and "as much as can possibly be done in order for 'reasonable' people like jaymc to still believe that politicians are still fairly inclined to help people because of their personal beliefs and former professions".

I could see Ben Roethlisberger going after that seat. His time in the NFL is about done, he's a native son and he has the requisite checkered past.

When President Donald Trump announced that Sarah Sanders would be departing her job as White House press secretary in June 2019, he urged her to run for governor of Arkansas. “She would be fantastic,” Trump tweeted at the time.

Now, less than a week after Trump himself left the White House under the cloud of a second impeachment, Sanders announced in a nearly eight-minute video Monday that she’s following his suggestion. Sanders, who endeared herself to Trump’s base while combatively — and sometimes misleadingly — sparring with the press, is seen by many as an early favorite in the race to lead a heavily GOP state where Trump’s role in the U.S. Capitol riot may not hurt her appeal.

“I took on the media, the radical left and their ‘cancel culture,’ and I won. As governor, I will be your voice, and never let them silence you,” Sanders said in the announcement.

turds!

The cop in Tacoma accelerated through and ran over pedestrians (a crowd of randos watching dickheads do donuts) at 18:45.

A spontaneous protest was taking place by 8pm.

In August, Pierce County diverted COVID response funds to a cop project to monitor specific organisers who had been coordinating protest against, and calling for the arrest of, the individual cops who murdered Manuel Ellis in March.

Two of those organisers arrived at the protest between 8 and 8:30, sat peacefully in place, and were searched without consent and arrested without Miranda reading before 9. They were held overnight until hat-passing raised their bail.

A co-organiser of one of the arrested ppl has clarified that the immediate response was a candelight vigil, as opposed to the protest convened for 24 hours later.

xp@me wait I misread that: it was a sit-in, vs the march last night.

attemptedmurdercop is six months away from retirement. guess they hadn't found time to do the "de-escalation vs plow pedestrians down with your SUV" training yet! or the "open the door and speak to citizens" training. he's probably been too busy investigating and prosecuting corruption and corporate crime for the last 29.5 years.

(you'd think "how to reverse" and "turn the steering wheel to drive away" was covered in driving lessons, but I'm not familiar with the process here)

i think the current idea is just to increase your 2021 tax bill by $1400 if you're over the income threshold.

TBF a few of those are just reversals of Trump's own unilateral executive orders

real muthaphuckkin jeez (crüt), Monday, 25 January 2021 22:36 (five years ago)

i mean the Executive branch has way too much power, don't disagree there, and would love to see that addressed and curtailed to a ridiculous degree. but with a split Congress it's the only way to do anything now as a President due to the tribalism present - with a Dem Congress right now, it should slow down once he's done reversing Trump's racism.

but I do miss the days when people uttered the old chestnut "the President's powers are limited" and it was actually somewhat closer to true. kind of scary how much it's expanded in just the 21st century.
