Hank Aaron was the Class Day speaker the year I graduated from college

Fantastic (did you get to speak to him?). Happy to say I was watching when he hit #715--the whole story around that (Bowie Kuhn's embarrassing behaviour, the death threats, the kid tearing around the bases with Aaron, the fact it was his first swing of the season) is amazing.

Aaron was still playing when I was 6-7 yrs old and I was in awe of him, he seemed possessed of superpowers. And always seemed like such a gracious man.

Don't know anything about the guy but I just noticed on wiki that he was married 7 times - 8 if you included the wife he married twice - and he separated from his last wife in 2019. Larry King that is.

Re: Hank Aaron, I read his autobiography when I was in 2nd grade and absolutely obsessed with baseball, and there was a section that published some of the hate mail that he received. It was the first time I'd ever been exposed to such vile, racist shit, and I credit that book with giving me some of my moral compass re: racism as I've aged. RIP.

I used to show a section of Ken Burns' Baseball to my classes on Jackie Robinson's birthday, one that included some of the hate mail he got. I was always a little uncertain if this was a good idea for a primary class (anywhere from grade 4 to grade 7), but I'm glad I did. You can't begin to appreciate Robinson or Aaron unless you're confronted with the full extent of what they went through.
