At the risk of stating the obvious not because he incited violence or tried to commit a coup, it's because he didn't succeed that he's finally losing some of the base. And they'll come roaring back in 2024 given the chance.

Dan I., Friday, 15 January 2021 15:19 (five years ago)

there's a missing ", it's" in there

Dan I., Friday, 15 January 2021 15:20 (five years ago)

idk not everything just stays the same, i mean donald trump didnt even exist five years ago

lag∞n, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

Sobering thought: the dip in approval probably includes a nonzero number of people who think he didn't fight hard enough to #stopthesteal. Or because he summoned

People for whom even Trump wasn't Trumpy enough

or what Dan I said xp

WaPo says The rioting criminal mob came within 60~ seconds of seeing Mike Pence on Jan. 6. And they were just 90 feet away from a small office where Pence was hiding, before a cop steered them away.

kinda wonder how things would be different if they'd gotten hold of him and/or the secret service just started killing people right and left

mookieproof, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:23 (five years ago)

29% (Pew) is a pretty step fall off that is surely at least partly attributable to a violent coup attempt

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:23 (five years ago)

...summoned the MAGA patriots and then told them not to kill anybody and to go home

alpaca lips now (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:23 (five years ago)

trump lucked out that it didnt get more violent than it was

lag∞n, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:25 (five years ago)

yet

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:25 (five years ago)

well at least if there are further incidents they probably wont be directly precipitated by him, tho with ol donnie you never know

Xxxxxpost Crosstabs make it clear that it's more complicated than that. More than just his base voted for him.

For instance, 20% of Trump voters considered his post-election behavior poor, 34% said it was only "fair" in January, meaning most of his voters surveyed disapproved at least somewhat of his conduct, which was a definite decline from the same poll in December. Considering the fight he was putting up, at the time, I don't think that change can merely be attributed to "he failed".

By the same token, though, 64% of Republican voters think he really won the election. So what this poll proves is that some of his voters are jumping ship, but that as usual, Republicans tolerate corruption amongst their own.

yeah some of these accounts are making it sound like we really were close to actual lawmakers & congresspeople getting whacked

frogbs, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:28 (five years ago)

Remember when Al Franken resigned from the Senate because of a dumb photo? Ah, "good times".

Nhex, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:29 (five years ago)

Xxpost There's 20 pages of crosstabs which break it down to an extent.

I was legitimately afraid of this happening as I watched it unfold in real time. I'm glad I didn't know how close it was as things unfolded as I may have had a full-on meltdown.

i have a feeling in-person harassment of sitting Democratic Congresspeople (and Republicans who "didn't do enough") is going to be heightened for a long time. esp since unlike the President, they walk around pretty out in the open.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:33 (five years ago)

just because Republicans don't hold their own accountable, like, ever, doesn't mean we should do the same for our own folks (it does mean though that maybe we shouldn't eat them for minor incidents). I think the Franken resignation was the right call.

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:37 (five years ago)

otm, in fact its essential that we hold our own accountable if we want to make the argument that people should be held accountable

lag∞n, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:38 (five years ago)

If we're the party that supports women, POC, believes in expanding social services, etc, then, yeah, sorry, we gotta stick to our principles. To believe in foundations means to be perpetually on the defensive. Them's the breaks.

Inside the building, Trump has been weathering a second impeachment and growing isolation from his onetime allies in sullen desolation.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misstated the year of the presidential election that Trump is contesting. It is the 2020 presidential election.

Pew Poll: 62% of Dems say Biden should work with GOP “even if it means disappointing some of his voters.” About the same percent of Rs says GOP members should “stand up” to Biden, “even if it means it’s harder to address critical problems facing the country.”

I don't know how journalists can continue to use the phrase 'increasingly isolated' in good conscience or with a straight face.
