Rubio is such a tiny turd. As much as I hate Trump, he was really good at taking out other hateful people.

I admit I'm curious to know how they're planning to deal with McConnell torpedoing 100% of everything they attempt with the filibuster though.

Sanders leads the budget committee now, and has signaled he would do it though reconciliation, requiring only 50 votes. Same as republican tax bill of 2017, as well as Obamacare

Karl Malone, Friday, 15 January 2021 05:21 (five years ago)

the left wing of the party completely willed these checks into existence, there was absolutely no interest in doing them from the party leadership, will be interesting to see how the left reacts to this centrist arithmetic, especially considering the $2000 was proposed under trump, its not particularly the ideal amount for continued survival, biden et al seem happy to pick up a couple senate seats off the idea move on

Biden will seek a deal with Republicans on another round of Covid-19 relief after taking office, rather than attempting to ram a package through without their support https://t.co/hY69XKk7CJ

oh, no problem - it might take a while to get to that point, too. according to washpost stuff, biden is trying to start "bipartisan" but is prepared to go with reconciliation if/when republicans refuse to help at all

the $2000 amount still has the magical Trump Mark of Approval

Kamala Harris was stumping for $2000 monthly mid-year, therefore it's a magical number with Republican-repelling properties

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who will chair the Budget Committee, has said he is working to put together a massive stimulus bill that could pass under special budget rules with a simple majority vote in the Senate, instead of the 60-vote margin normally required.

Biden, however, wants to try for a bipartisan majority on his first bill — although his team appears to have conducted little outreach to congressional Republicans on the plan. Democratic aides say that if Republicans do not appear willing to cooperate, they can shift gears quickly and move to “budget reconciliation,” the procedure that would allow them to pass legislation without GOP votes. That’s how Republicans passed their big tax-cut bill after Trump took office, and how President Barack Obama passed the Affordable Care Act.

also, magical Kamala-repelling properties.

“We will finish the job of getting a total of $2,000 in cash relief to people who need it the most.

The $600 already appropriated is simply not enough.”

although his team appears to have conducted little outreach to congressional Republicans on the plan.

To be fair, congressional Republicans have been busy for a few months denying his imminent presidency (among other not-governing things).

the place to start would have been retroactive checks, then get to the vaunted $2k

or perhaps even better—match dollar for dollar the trillion dollar goodie bags doled out over the last year to financial sector and defense contractors and fossil fuels etc

^actually that’s the ticket: replace “paygo” with Matching Stim Checks to actual people for every dime Delta and Raytheon get ffs

At the risk of stating the obvious not because he incited violence or tried to commit a coup, it's because he didn't succeed that he's finally losing some of the base. And they'll come roaring back in 2024 given the chance.

Sobering thought: the dip in approval probably includes a nonzero number of people who think he didn't fight hard enough to #stopthesteal. Or because he summoned

People for whom even Trump wasn't Trumpy enough

or what Dan I said xp

WaPo says The rioting criminal mob came within 60~ seconds of seeing Mike Pence on Jan. 6. And they were just 90 feet away from a small office where Pence was hiding, before a cop steered them away.

kinda wonder how things would be different if they'd gotten hold of him and/or the secret service just started killing people right and left

mookieproof, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:23 (five years ago)

29% (Pew) is a pretty step fall off that is surely at least partly attributable to a violent coup attempt

Xxxxxpost Crosstabs make it clear that it's more complicated than that. More than just his base voted for him.

For instance, 20% of Trump voters considered his post-election behavior poor, 34% said it was only "fair" in January, meaning most of his voters surveyed disapproved at least somewhat of his conduct, which was a definite decline from the same poll in December. Considering the fight he was putting up, at the time, I don't think that change can merely be attributed to "he failed".

By the same token, though, 64% of Republican voters think he really won the election. So what this poll proves is that some of his voters are jumping ship, but that as usual, Republicans tolerate corruption amongst their own.

yeah some of these accounts are making it sound like we really were close to actual lawmakers & congresspeople getting whacked

Xxpost There's 20 pages of crosstabs which break it down to an extent.

I was legitimately afraid of this happening as I watched it unfold in real time. I'm glad I didn't know how close it was as things unfolded as I may have had a full-on meltdown.

i have a feeling in-person harassment of sitting Democratic Congresspeople (and Republicans who "didn't do enough") is going to be heightened for a long time. esp since unlike the President, they walk around pretty out in the open.

just because Republicans don't hold their own accountable, like, ever, doesn't mean we should do the same for our own folks (it does mean though that maybe we shouldn't eat them for minor incidents). I think the Franken resignation was the right call.

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:37 (five years ago)

otm, in fact its essential that we hold our own accountable if we want to make the argument that people should be held accountable

lag∞n, Friday, 15 January 2021 15:38 (five years ago)

If we're the party that supports women, POC, believes in expanding social services, etc, then, yeah, sorry, we gotta stick to our principles. To believe in foundations means to be perpetually on the defensive. Them's the breaks.
