Parler's cardinal security sin is known as an insecure direct object reference, says Kenneth White, codirector of the Open Crypto Audit Project, who looked at the code of the download tool @donk_enby posted online. An IDOR occurs when a hacker can simply guess the pattern an application uses to refer to its stored data. In this case, the posts on Parler were simply listed in chronological order: Increase a value in a Parler post url by one, and you'd get the next post that appeared on the site. Parler also doesn't require authentication to view public posts and doesn't use any sort of "rate limiting" that would cut off anyone accessing too many posts too quickly. Together with the IDOR issue, that meant that any hacker could write a simple script to reach out to Parler's web server and enumerate and download every message, photo, and video in the order they were posted.

With DC and 50 statehouses to choose from, it's hard to imagine that Maganauts won't participate in further violent insurrectionist activity before Biden has even been sworn in. Trump started signalling his intentions to hang onto power whatever the election results at least a month before Nov. 3.

I don't discount the likelihood of more violence, but I do think — hope — that these demonstrations are going to be mostly notable for being small and pathetic looking. I'm sure they can pull together a few hundred people here and there, but I don't think it's going to be some militia army emerging from deep cover.

It's a small side effect in comparison to all the grotesqueries and preening from GOP types in particular, but there is something telling that a bunch of people who thought they could get away with it -- whatever 'it' was -- found themselves humiliated on the broadest of scales, and clearly had no sense as to how or why they would be.
