When you're a congress, they let you do it

alpaca lips now (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 22:38 (five years ago)

just ending governments at random times when the parliament doesn't support the executive is how much of the world works. maybe impeachment-o-rama won't be so bad.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 22:39 (five years ago)

Great point just made that a couple of big advantages of postponing the trial portion is that the Dems will control the senate, which means not just subpoena power, but also the power and ability to discover documents and other evidence left out from the first impeachment trial, not to mention any other crimes Trump (probably) committed over the past 4 years. I'm sure Mitch understands this as well. If he really wanted this done, he could end this ASAP. Waiting until Trump is out of office is actually potentially a gift to Dems.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 22:51 (five years ago)

Congress should absolutely be able to issue votes of no confidence.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 22:52 (five years ago)

So will Trump actually be forced to turn up this time? I seem to recall Clinton being publicly quizzed for what felt like weeks about the dress jizzing etc. Seemed like Trump pretty much pretended the last impeachment trial wasn't even happening, although it was a year ago, which in current terms is a century or more so easy to forget the details.

a degree in bullshit from glasters uni (Matt #2), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 22:55 (five years ago)

Well, if he's out of office then I have to assume he can be subpoenaed, right?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 22:56 (five years ago)

Huh, one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach also voted to object to the election results (Tom Rice of South Carolina):

Clinton testified to Ken Starr but he didn’t show up for his impeachment trial iirc

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:02 (five years ago)

Waiting until Trump is out of office is actually potentially a gift to Dems.

I thought the idea of waiting 100 days was really bad, but waiting a week could be good--for the reasons you say, and also it opens up space for the possibility of Republican defections. Emotions can wane in 100 days, but it's not like anyone's going to forget last Wednesday in the space of a week.

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:03 (five years ago)

Also, there is zero chance more information will not continue to come out by the hour.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:13 (five years ago)

in terms of the verdict, the only thing that matters is mcconnell's view of the politics of the decision. the actual evidence makes no difference.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:15 (five years ago)

Yeah, I can't imagine mountains of evidence are ever going to overcome the politics, sadly.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:23 (five years ago)

Yeah I listened to the speeches this afternoon and everybody was repeating the same three or four talking points; no one was changing his or her mind.

In a cute twist one of the R talking points was that there wasn't time to have investigations or hearings or a real debate. And I'm like "what would be the point of a debate, since everyone involved already knows how they will vote?"

alpaca lips now (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:23 (five years ago)

Speaking of speeches, you know who just posted one via the WH Twitter account. It was, for him...restrained.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:25 (five years ago)

Basically for this reason, I suspect

The president has been told by advisers repeatedly that he has potential legal exposure over the violence by his supporters last week, which followed a speech in which he repeatedly called on them to "fight" for him.

— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) January 13, 2021

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:25 (five years ago)

In the case of the previous impeachment, McConnell decided that the best politics was to very deliberately suppress any new evidence, such as Bolton's testimony or seeking to depose Trump. The "hear no evil" defense.

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:26 (five years ago)

Yeah, he is king of bad faith, so who cares what he says at this point.

xpost Senate is a little different, of course, though I have no idea how it will go. Certainly most of these assholes don't really want him to run again, whether or not he can win, so preventing that might be in their best interests.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:27 (five years ago)

I know we aren't supposed to doom up the politics threads and I'm overly cynical these days, but honestly, if the sight of people storming the Capitol with confederate flags and pro-Holocaust t-shirts, with five people killed and a very real risk to sitting members of Congress only moves the needle 10 fucking opposition votes, I kind of doubt we're ever going to see anything but dangerous levels of hyper-partisan action from here on out.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:30 (five years ago)

don't think you're being overly cynical about this in particular tbh, tho hopefully "from here on out" is a long time.

boz conspiracy by toby hus (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:32 (five years ago)

No, that's a very reasonable conclusion, jon. our politics are extremely broken and Biden won't be able to do much to fix that. imo, his best strategy is to ignore the panicked yelps of Republicans that they are being steamrolled and institute massive changes that directly assist ordinary people in ways they can see and feel at once. he needs to channel FDR and say 'fuck 'em, we're doing this.'

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 23:36 (five years ago)

Damnit re Skaggs. Not surprising at all, but he's a very important person to my core musical self (grew up on bluegrass; took Tony Rice's passing VERY hard). I'm now gonna file him squarely in the James Brown category: If you aren't playing music, I really have no time for any other aspect of your life or being. Good DAY, sir.

TrumpPence a Bag (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 14 January 2021 00:16 (five years ago)

And here is Lauren Boebert's floor rant:

“Madam Speaker, I rise today to oppose this impeachment and to denounce the recent violence on the Capitol just as I opposed the previous impeachment and the violence we’ve all witnessed all summer long across our great country,” Boebert said.

“Make no mistake here. The hypocrisy of the left is on full display,” Boebert continued, highlighting previous comments from Democrats which could be seen as calls for violence.

“What about the gentlewoman from New York who defended the looting by saying the looters just wanted loafs of bread,” Boebert asked rhetorically. “The last I checked, Best Buy, Tesla, and the stores alike do not produce baked goods.”

“Where’s the accountability for the left after encouraging and normalizing violence? Rather than helping American people in this time, we start impeachments that further divide our country,” Boebert said. “I call bull-crap.”

“I hear the Democrats demanding unity; sadly, they’re only unified in hate,” Boebert concluded.

That Trump video is a nice illustration of the Flannery O'Connor Moral Principle: “She would have been a good woman,” The Misfit said, “if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.”
