is it Basse-Terre?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 08:30 (five years ago)

Those palm trees with the big clusters of red fruit don't look like any I've seen and feel like a clue! But I don't know enough about palms to identify the species. Maybe this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adonidia_merrillii

or this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bactris_gasipaes

or...?

Messina?

nashwan, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:36 (five years ago)

Now I don't know what to think at all -- Naples but with a British cathedral in it?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:38 (five years ago)

Actually, is it Naples? That glass arcade in the foreground looks a lot like the 19th century glass mall there.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:41 (five years ago)

huh yes the church does make it look like Messina, and that's consistent with it seemingly being on a strait. I've not been there!

All cars are bad (Euler), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:41 (five years ago)

The big McDonalds sign at the bottom left in the second pic (if you zoom in) had me googling branches of McD's that would match up with the geography but needed the third pic with the proximity of what looks like mainland over the water and the shape of the docks to really narrow that down.

nashwan, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:45 (five years ago)

Messina it is

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:48 (five years ago)

That second pic on Streetview

nashwan, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:49 (five years ago)

yeah the green McDo sign helped me see that this was Europe. I was looking for pertinent McDos in the Côte d'Azur earlier, didn't succeed obviously but now I reallllllllllly want to be there.

All cars are bad (Euler), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 16:50 (five years ago)

I just want to go to McDonald’s

Doesn't look European, I'm guessing US

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 15 January 2021 08:51 (five years ago)

I wondered if it might be Boulder but not sure it's built up enough.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 15 January 2021 08:57 (five years ago)

some kind of small sports stadium in the middle of the picture, looks pretty distinctive

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 15 January 2021 11:41 (five years ago)

I'm drawn to the circular lawn with towered building centre left (an historic university/college?), but it's not helping, yet.

Missoula, Montana

All cars are bad (Euler), Friday, 15 January 2021 13:03 (five years ago)

Aha, I think maybe this featured in a GeoWizard video a good while ago, I remember the M on the hillside causing much discussion. Need to see if I can find it and check.

― All cars are bad (Euler),

Yes, was it one of those you just see it right off the bat?

cherry blossom, Friday, 15 January 2021 14:53 (five years ago)

It looked at first glance like a Rockies place, and it looked like a university what with stadium and the buildings around it, so I thought of a few western university towns and looked if they were on rivers. I tried the university of Idaho first, then Montana second and bingo. I knew it wasn’t Boise State because I’d been to Boise and the stadium has purple turf.

Way to go, I was about to start looking up Utah State

lol i have utah expertise and it definitely seemed like it was either further north or higher up to me (evergreens at street level). missoula is beautiful and a nice place to visit.

map, Friday, 15 January 2021 16:41 (five years ago)

Yeah I thought Utah myself at first

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 15 January 2021 18:08 (five years ago)

i don't know exactly how to tell it isn't utah but it's some combination of: no sagebrush, no cedar trees, no juniper trees, looks like it gets a few more inches of rain per year, no lds churches, the wasatch is more abrupt-looking.

map, Friday, 15 January 2021 18:24 (five years ago)

i was going to guess medford. definitely north of utah though. good pic.

Methford is not that nice, my man

i ate a very nice slice of cherry pie in medford once. did not detect any meth.

South East Asia for sure, but doesn't seem modern enough for HCMC

Tampico, Mexico

(I went to Structurae and scrolled down through the list of cable-stayed bridges until Puente Tampico showed its hideous face)

Is it Vientiane?

chap, Saturday, 16 January 2021 13:12 (five years ago)

it is! that's the biggest street in the Laotian capital, as viewed from the "vertical runway" (a giant stone arch thing made with concrete which the USA donated for the building of an airport)

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 16 January 2021 13:32 (five years ago)

I was there for a few days in 2005, perhaps the most laid back capital I've ever visited.

chap, Saturday, 16 January 2021 13:34 (five years ago)

this is from when I was there in 2008, yes very laid back, big contrast to horrible Vang Vieng

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 16 January 2021 13:42 (five years ago)

I had a lot of fun in Vang Vieng but I was only young.

chap, Saturday, 16 January 2021 14:09 (five years ago)

it was like Bad Boy Island in Pinocchio, thought I saw someone die within an hour of arriving.

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 16 January 2021 14:46 (five years ago)

I went to Structurae and scrolled down through the list of cable-stayed bridges

i thought of this except a) using wikipedia or something as I hadn't heard of structurae and ii) i wrote it off as insane as there are probably a million cable stayed bridges. so, kudos.
