Karl Malone, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:42 (five years ago)

growing up in Texas, I knew that Bush was "the good one" and Clinton was "the bad one", but that's it

in retrospect its kinda fucked that a bunch of my generation got their introduction to politics via Bill Clinton getting a blowjob

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:43 (five years ago)

I remember Carter getting elected but it didn't seem like a big deal? Maybe my parents weren't super excited about it. Plus I was only 7. The first political figure who really made an impression on me was Margaret Thatcher — we lived in the UK for most of 1979, we were there when she got elected and it was clearly a big deal. My parents and their friends we were living with were not happy about it.

McConnell believes Trump committed impeachable offenses & is pleased w/ impeachment effort, believing it'll make easier to purge Trump from GOP. McCarthy asking other Rs whether he oughta call for Trump to resign. by @jmartNYT & @maggieNYT https://t.co/wnWQ7VtkYL

come to think of it that was my introduction to the idea of oral sex, which at 12 years old made NO SENSE AT ALL to me

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:46 (five years ago)

With most people it was kept private who they supported. My mom had guesses who my dad voted for but he never flat out disclosed it until Obama. Theyve been a couple since 1966!

In some parallel universe, Dan Quayle is finishing being president right now and the people are wondering what could have been worse.

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:48 (five years ago)

pretty wild...my wife said she'd probably wind up divorcing me if I became a Trump supporter

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:48 (five years ago)

I remember my dad making my brothers and I watch the Nixon resignation, saying it was "historic." I was old enough to know that was code for "something that would bore me to shit", and it did. Plus, it was a nice summer day out.

henry s, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:49 (five years ago)

like I know couples who have opposing views in the Trump era and I cannot figure out how it even works. do you just never talk about it?

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:49 (five years ago)

Quayle getting mad at Murphy Brown is a real forgotten highlight of the old culture war.

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:50 (five years ago)

Potatoes got mad at him for misspelling their names.

Quayle was a proto-Tea Partier and dumb as rocks.

yeah i think she's a moderate dem (or lean) basically but i do not know who my mom voted for probably up until mccain/palin (she would make comments about palin) and obviously trump

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:51 (five years ago)

I feel like Quayle was given a flash card with a bad spelling, but it still fell on him

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:51 (five years ago)

Maris Piper was his running mate

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:52 (five years ago)

Remember when Gary Hart was seen with a woman, who wasn't his wife!! While he was separated from said wife.
Simpler times....

Didn't Poppy Bush more or less start the culture wars with "we should be more like the Waltons, and less like the Simpsons"?

henry s, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:54 (five years ago)

no

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:55 (five years ago)

The moral majority and gingrich etc emerged around then i think. But those culture wars are different from our current ones.

treeship., Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:55 (five years ago)

amazing how they went from that to "we're the party of the Simpsons, besides the annoying one that actually has a moral center", while The Simpsons were still on the air

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:55 (five years ago)

They’re the party of porn, casinos and the paranoid style now

and...

McCarthy has asked colleagues if he should urge Trump to resign, is open to a censure

Trump’s toast

Or something. Who knows.

treeship., Tuesday, 12 January 2021 21:59 (five years ago)

The GOP has begun the process of forgetting Trump.

Instant amnesia is the GOP's greatest talent. See: Nixon, Dubya.

who knows, but mcconnell is the person who controls the impeachment trial verdict. he has no control over the 6 or so on the left or the right, but the rest of them will vote however he votes.

i can see why mitch would want to try this, but it again suggests they think they can control the monster. the GOP disavowing trump won't make the MAGAs any less racist or crazy

mookieproof, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

While taking cover under the seats of the gallery, we were instructed to take off our mask in order to put on a gas mask. Why did we need a gas mask in the House?

Because Trump and his Republicans had incited insurrectionists to launch a deadly attack on the Capitol. That's why. https://t.co/wXMasUmA8u

He was a phony Republican anyway: In 1999, Trump changed his party affiliation to the Independence Party of New York. In August 2001, Trump changed his party affiliation to Democratic. In September 2009, Trump changed his party affiliation back to the Republican Party. In December 2011, Trump changed to "no party affiliation" (independent).

Purge him!!

it's not a great option but it's probably the best option they've got, and if they additionally support the vote to bar him from running again it becomes an even better option.
