I don't know if I've been as terrified as I have been this week. Not only last week and the mounting threats for the days to come, but the knock-on local effects of Trumpism.

Here, over the weekend, a Black aldermanic candidate held a Zoom interview that was bombed by Trump supporters that started shouting "TRUMP 2024" and, far worse, started posting home addresses for people on the call and said they were going shoot the candidate and "all other Black people".

Democrats were told that the Capitol Police and the National Guard were preparing for potentially tens of thousands of armed protesters coming to Washington and were establishing rules of engagement for warfare. In general, the military and police don’t plan to shoot anyone until one of the rioters fires, but there could be exceptions.

I have been feeling this way since he won the Republican nomination.

DJP otm

The fear was always lurking in the background for me and would flare up at times - something my son would tell me about classmates using ā€œTrumpā€ as a threat, the pointed looks I’d get when visiting the rural PA area where I used to live. It was rising as we neared the election but is very, very present as of December and especially now.

Right, same. But it's reached another level that I wasn't not at all prepared for.

C'mon, I never said I wasn't scared before. I said I'm "more terrified than ever" this week.

Been thinking about American gun culture and how the fetishization of firearms has always been pointing us toward armed insurrection and terrorism. I mean, not that we haven't been there before, but the gun cult in this country is at its peak right now (at least so far). We never even had "gun culture" until the last few decades, really. Gun iconography has always been the province of terrorists/freedom fighters/whatever you want to call them in any given situation. Insurrectionists. It's been mostly cosplay here to date, but it's not going to stay that way. It either dissipates over time or it builds to violence. Or, most likely, both — the more it tends toward real violence, the more it pushes away some people who were only in it for the beers and shit talk at the firing range. Either way, we've had a half-century or so of building this, it's not going to go away quietly.

On a somewhat more hopeful note, I appreciated this from Russell Moore. I don't know how much sway he has with anyone as a never-Trumper, but within his own moral context — which is of course partly abhorrent, pro-life, etc — this is a strong piece.

Something I’ve promised myself I’ll do this year is call my friends more often. Have gotten bad at that.

I may eat these words, but without a speech or Twitter fatwa by Daddy to rile them up further, plus their plan to go for all 50 state capitols, might not pan out as bad as the 6th. But we’ll see. I have friends who live on Capitol Hill.

Yeah the rise of this bit of speciousness in Republican rhetoric has been going on for decades, and it’s become so internalized that all you have to do is say the word ā€œdemocracyā€ around them and it comes out. It is one of those things I never let pass unchallenged, because it is so clearly dangerous. And is also of course completely stupid, because there’s no contradiction between republic and democracy, and in fact we are a democratic republic.

But basically we have one political party that is totally fine with not living in a democracy. As long as they’re in charge of course.

He's actually not going to THE Alamo. He's going to Alamo, TX.

tho I'd be amazed if he knows the distinction.

I thought this gopnik essay was actually really good, about how some form of autocracy, not democracy, is the natural state of things and that we are essentially waging constant battle to build or even just preserve liberal institutions

k3vin k., Tuesday, 12 January 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

He doesn't, but I've already seen some screenshots of the now deleted Parler posts that basically render the difference meaningless.
