I'm bifurcating between a couple of different websites, but I might bifurcate into another room to bifurcate a book.

Given that impeachment has traditionally turned the Senate into a courtroom where they do nothing but litigate the charges levied against the accused, I'm not sure why the bifurcation phrasing is so funny

Here's to hoping that it's gotten just a little more difficult for the right to successfully reify Opposite Day re: every easily-verifiable fact they don't approve of.

UPDATE: Dow (@DowNewsroom), the massive chemical company, tells me it will not donate to any member of Congress that objected to the certification of the presidential vote

This is not a pause. The company won't donate to these Republicans ever again.https://t.co/r4Z4TjJUCe pic.twitter.com/LqUaadFyiQ

They did leave a little room for some of this shit down the line, though:

UPDATE: Dow sent a new statement, clarifying that the suspension lasts for the members' CURRENT term in office. The new statement leaves open the possibility that they will resume donations if these members are reelected pic.twitter.com/QbebNoo7AZ

i just can't fucking get over that i'm just now finding out that the senate (and the house?) are single-threaded and that increasing the threads is like a crazy radical idea apparently? this country absolutely deserves its impending doom.

the procedures are agreed by majority vote. in practice they've done nothing else during impeachment trials, but there's no reason it has to be that way with a democratic majority in the senate.

"bifurcate" seems like exactly the kind of word someone who never did more than two things at once would use to describe the possibility of doing two things at once.

it's not. this is just a convention by which recent impeachment trials have been run.

To balance the news that Trump's approval ratings among Republicans has dropped from the 90s to the low 70s, the other numbers confirm the prion disease:

Quinnipiac poll

AMONG REPUBLICAN VOTERS...

- 73% say Trump is protecting, not undermining, democracy

- 70% say Republicans who voted to block electors were protecting, not undermining, democracy

- 73% say there was widespread voter fraud in 2020

- Trump's job approval is 71%

My every workday is a perpetual act of bifurcation (although often furcated in ILX's favor, tbrr).

Meat Chew All the Way (Old Lunch), Monday, 11 January 2021 19:55 (five years ago)

direct business donations to individual politicians are negligible. they do it all through PACs. these announcements are not meaningless, but unless they also change their PAC donations it makes no difference to the funds available to those republicans.

and i note that JPMC is doing a "both sides" thing and suspending donations to both parties.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 11 January 2021 19:56 (five years ago)

did the state dept website get hacked again or is that someone screwing around?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 11 January 2021 19:57 (five years ago)

I'm gonna be honest with you guys; I don't think this is really a defensible stance but I really, really don't want to actually consciously live through the next nine days, I wish I could snap my fingers and have it be next Wednesday and Joe Biden is president -- obviously that doesn't end what's happening here but it does end SOME PHASE of it and it's wearing on me -- the reason this is maybe not a defensible stance is that there are a lot of people who don't have the option to nope out and who in fact are going to spend the next nine days staring this right in the face to give people like me the right to get past it. Anyway I wonder whether anybody else has this feeling.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 11 January 2021 19:57 (five years ago)

look i don't actually know how any of this works but i'm pretty sure it's all absurd

you can count on me for endless variations on this take

map, Monday, 11 January 2021 19:58 (five years ago)

Polling republicans about what they "believe" at this point seems pointless. Not sure if I found this on ILX (probably), but this thread really nails it:

Let me explain something to those of you who didn't grow up around violently abusive white supremacists.

*They absolutely do not believe their own bullshit*, but it's useful for them to pretend they do.

eephus, yes: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/29/opinion/trump-arts-culture.html

Before Trump, I’d never had the feeling of wanting to fast-forward through the era I was living in, of longing to be in the future, looking back at how it all turned out.
