Somehow i hadn’t seen the gallows they erected and the zip ties for hostages until today. It is so sickening that Trump is still in that office.

The capitol hill officer who died was once a custodian in my hometown elementary school. Somehow that also made this hit home in a new way.

treeship., Monday, 11 January 2021 00:39 (five years ago)

Trump is just as bad as he seemed in 2016 and worse.

There was deliberately no leftist action on Wednesday. I wonder if that will be true the 17th and 20th? In a lot of ways seems better to stay away and let the Trump people fight with the cops.

And way safer too, obv.

I hope the left stays away on these dates. There will be enough security.

treeship., Monday, 11 January 2021 00:56 (five years ago)

Are people going to take issue at who gets to set the stage if they are not able to protest when they want.

I mean does make more sense to let trumpites make themselves look bad if that wwas all that amounted to.
But could see other factions thinking that removed their autonomy.

Stevolende, Monday, 11 January 2021 01:00 (five years ago)

"could see" is really doing a lot of work in that sentence

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Monday, 11 January 2021 01:02 (five years ago)

Was just thinking that other types of activist might want to make a show at some events. & aren't going to want to not turn up to things just cos the fascists are making a show of themselves.

There's normally counter protests at a lot of things for one.
I assume the left will have less incentive to protest Biden policy anyway.
Was thinking about longterm if this fascists vs police thing is going to continue after the inauguration which it probably will.
No sign of them wanting to set up a freedom camp to protest this ' stolen election' yet or anything. Though inauguration is still 9 days away.

Was basically just thinking is it just going to be these 2 occasions or is it going to be longer term.

Stevolende, Monday, 11 January 2021 01:14 (five years ago)

I’m not sure if they are required to do the 24 hour ask for unanimous consent kabuki or if that’s just running down the clock.

It’s another 24 hour deadline

Überschadenfreude

In St. Louis on Saturday, several hundred people protested against Sen. Josh Hawley, the first-term Missouri Republican who led efforts in the Senate to overturn Biden's election. The protestors painted “RESIGN HAWLEY” in large yellow letters in the middle of the street.

A caravan of about 40 cars circled Sen. Ron Johnson’s office in Madison, Wisconsin, urging him to resign.

Lawmakers who voted against Biden are denounced back home

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Monday, 11 January 2021 01:33 (five years ago)

I mean its the quickest way to get him out of office. They can do the 25th then impeach, right? In that case he couldn’t run again.

treeship., Monday, 11 January 2021 01:35 (five years ago)

Yeah. Meanwhile--trigger warning: one more cornerstone of the real shit talk from now on---from RIP Rush Limbaugh, one of shakey's fakeout threads:

This was after the US Capitol coup attempt:

"There's a lot of people calling for the end of violence," Limbaugh said. "There's a lot of conservatives, social media, who say that any violence or aggression at all is unacceptable. Regardless of the circumstances. I'm glad Sam Adams, Thomas Paine, the actual tea party guys, the men at Lexington and Concord didn't feel that way."

It's a little funny to remember that about a week ago Hawley was complaining about some crew of protestors allegedly scaring his wife or something and it almost became a thing for a hot second.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 January 2021 01:47 (five years ago)

I think the charitable interpretation is they know the senate will not take it up until it’s back in session after the inauguration, so there’s no rush.

Finding it really hard not to see things in mannichean terms here, with the confederacy as a kind of eternal evil force that keeps rearing its head again. I generally don't like to see the world in those terms and think there are huge flaws in doing so, but it feels that way right now.

Daz White (darraghmac), Monday, 11 January 2021 02:30 (five years ago)

i. Insurrection, violent, officers and elected officials feel under threat (seemingly apparently so)
ii. Immediate and very sobering show of force in response (we've had plenty of discussion about what BLM faced)
iii. ?
iv. Right GOP what make ye of this lads?
v. Profit

Daz White (darraghmac), Monday, 11 January 2021 02:33 (five years ago)

I guess im asking whether there's any line of thought says that the restraint (however it manifested itself, but taking the unwillingness to have serious strength in place ready to go) is A Bad Thing, or a delaying of the necessary inevitable, or wouldve been regrettable but would sure have helped pin the wavering republicans now or just flat out wouldve been awesome

Daz White (darraghmac), Monday, 11 January 2021 02:38 (five years ago)

honestly, when i saw the thing about the officer leading the terrorists/rioters/etc away from the senate, i was like - "oh that's great work".
then someone said that the senate is where you'd get blown away instantly and there was likely officers with automatic weapons in there and my gut reaction was, "aw shame."
obviously you want to avoid that level of violence, but part of me really felt like, hell, they'd deserve it – a hallway of angry, yelling ignorant racists getting turned into hamburger meat in seconds.

A massacre of a crowd of white people would have been a disaster.

i'm basically anti-murder, here's why

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 January 2021 02:56 (five years ago)

I actually can’t imagine the effect of the national guard killing hundreds of Americans on US soil in a matter of minutes, I think they’d basically be fighting a full scale counterinsurgency against the distributed force of the militia movement hours later, with anyone who doesn’t desert.

Canon in Deez (silby), Monday, 11 January 2021 02:56 (five years ago)

Ok step back from massacre- if you think it would be labelled that in the circs? -and turn it into counterprotest tactics as seen all last year for instance

Xp to silby yes, go on

Daz White (darraghmac), Monday, 11 January 2021 02:58 (five years ago)

War-crimey counterprotest tactics such as deploying tear gas and blast balls don’t really stop protests nor do they protect anything from anyone, but they might protect the seat of government from armed insurgents who are actually little peepants freaks.

Canon in Deez (silby), Monday, 11 January 2021 03:01 (five years ago)

Xpost militia would label it a massacre if one person died of heat stroke.

They're already out there complaining that BLM got more favorable treatment (bout lost my shit the first time i saw that)

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 January 2021 03:01 (five years ago)

Only five people died in the so-called 1770 Boston Massacre and see where that led

Boring United Methodist Church (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 11 January 2021 03:06 (five years ago)

Yeah the brits like i said but listen the dynamics here are surely a little different

Daz White (darraghmac), Monday, 11 January 2021 03:08 (five years ago)

For one thing, when xpost Jan. 17 is going to incl. demonstrations at all state capitols, supposedly, and quite possibly a replay of/advancement on what's already happened in Michigan and Georgia (where Sec of State has had to be escorted by security forces), as well as another promised DC assault---it's just too decentralized for a few decisive confrontations, or it may be---also, violence tends just to become violence---also, well shit you know more about than we do, re the Brits and the Irish, on and on and on, though not forever (altho Brexit)
