Agreed.

Fucking hell we all warned everyone about Trump and predicted some dark shit from his presidency but I admit to not foreseeing "mishandling a pandemic resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and fomenting a riot on the Capitol resulting in the murder of a cop by his minions" being the capstone.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 10 January 2021 20:33 (five years ago)

Re KM above: also, if the COVID and the economic situation were to be the same or worse in 100 days, there'd be no reason for them not to say we need to wait another 100 days. And if, as everyone hopes, things are much better on both fronts, that's precisely when even some Democrats will say "time to move on." They shouldn't wait.

Not entirely convinced the 20th won't be a shitshow, but hopefully the Capitol police / military will take it a little more seriously

It kind of feels like my worst predictions about Trump didn't come true until they all got compressed into the very end of his presidency.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 10 January 2021 20:47 (five years ago)

OK true, good points on proceeding directly. BUT there also needs to be a full accounting by the FBI or a House committee or somebody about the whole thing, reopening old wounds or not.

re the question of are people coming to our homes with guns good piece from a couple months ago with historical context on periods of low level political violence, one of which we may already be in

_If proud boys and vigilantes can’t pull off a coordinated drive for power, they may opt for a time-honored approach in democratic politics: the “strategy of tension.” The term was coined in Italy during the Years of Lead from the late 1960s to the 1980s, when political violence exploded, with bombings, kidnappings, and failed coups making weekly headlines._

People downplaying the events this week at the capitol and making fun of the dumbass insurrectionists are going to look fucking stupid, because this will be considered another Ruby Ridge in 20 years imo.

Jimi Buffett (PBKR), Sunday, 10 January 2021 20:57 (five years ago)

Yeah I don’t wanna go all “CAN WE JUST ADMIT I WAS RIGHT” to my friends (most of whom didn’t vote Trump but still thought I was overreacting and that things would be basically fine) but seriously, it’s fucking insane the degree to which huge portions of this country (including most media outlets) thought having a racist lunatic game show host with no regard for human life and a complete inability to ever speak the truth in the most powerful office in the world would be “basically fine”

McVeigh and Nichols certainly knew the details. That plus Vegas shooting are the kind of thing I'm worried about going forward. Meanwhile Federal govt will continue to be worried about ISIS.

Jan 17 seems to be the date most commonly posted-boasted before THE Day:
Various virtual fliers circulating on social media promise an "armed march" on Capitol Hill and in every state capital a few days before the inauguration. Other posts promise violence on Inauguration Day itself...Twitter was particularly concerned by a Trump tweet indicating he wouldn't attend the inauguration. That message "may also serve as encouragement to those potentially considering violent acts that the Inauguration would be a 'safe' target."
...Some state legislatures are also concerned about the potential for violence. In the wake of the Capitol insurrection, Florida lawmakers have proposed a measure that would increase penalties for people arrested during a violent protest.

"If you injure a police officer during that period of time, you will go to jail for at least six months," Florida House of Representatives Speaker Chris Sprowls told Fox News. "If you are arrested during an aggravated riot situation, you will spend the night in jail."

I really thought the GOP was gonna try to keep him in check cuz it’s really not in their best interests to have a dumb narcissist calling all the shots for them

I think (and this is much more terrifying) that the GOP did in fact look at the momentum Trump and his supporters' government-overthrown plan had, and decided to take a wait-and-see approach. They were fully onboard with a government overthrow, if it worked. Because it would have meant they'd run things forevermore. People are like "Trump went too far and now the GOP are triangulating their response" but I think the triangulation happened beforehand. Like, does anyone really buy McConnell's feelgood bullshit speech during the joint session? If they'd had the votes to overturn the electoral college results, he would have been right there giving a slightly different speech welcoming Trump to a second term.

thousand-yard spiral stairs (f. hazel), Sunday, 10 January 2021 21:31 (five years ago)

xp, yes, I meant that the insurrection is initially viewed as a failure by the maintstream, but on the right will be viewed as a "shot heard round the world" and catalyst for years of attacks.

Jimi Buffett (PBKR), Sunday, 10 January 2021 21:33 (five years ago)

yeah Ruby Ridge looms large in the mind of all the wrong people, almost a religious significance. especially if you think the Constitution was dictated to the Founders by God Himself. Bundyville podcast gets into this territory

Missed that not only is the PGA pulling their golf tournament from Trump, they have implemented a lifetime ban on ever holding any events at any of his properties ever again. Still think one of the most OTM things I've ever read about this asshole is that he will be the first president in history to end with fewer things named after him than when he started.

True but there’s a pretty steady line from Handwaving away the Access Hollywood video -> Not pushing back on Trump blatantly lying about “3 million illegal votes” in 2016 -> Working tirelessly to discredit the Russia story even though there’s clearly something there -> Refusing to allow any witnesses in the Ukraine impeachment -> Humoring his allegations of voter fraud -> Stoking an insurrection at the Capitol. I kinda thought in 2017 that members of the GOP would get on his ass about how lying constantly and not even pretending to consider Democrats as people was ultimately going to backfire on them, and how blowing their political capital on dipshit ideas like a border wall or a Muslim ban was gonna waste the four years of power they’d lucked into. I guess ultimately they got the tax cut and SC justices in the end.

Another of the many reasons to get him out of there ASAP, if there are in fact credible threats leading up to the inauguration, then there's a very good possibility he will do nothing about it, or work to stifle it. That information must make it into the right hands.
