Wilson's people bypassed VP Thomas Marshall entirely, let Edith Wilson run the show.

Maybe we should let Mother Pence run the joint.

re the question of are people coming to our homes with guns good piece from a couple months ago with historical context on periods of low level political violence, one of which we may already be in

If proud boys and vigilantes can’t pull off a coordinated drive for power, they may opt for a time-honored approach in democratic politics: the “strategy of tension.” The term was coined in Italy during the Years of Lead from the late 1960s to the 1980s, when political violence exploded, with bombings, kidnappings, and failed coups making weekly headlines.

Whatever happens with impeachment and the biden presidency and the GOP, trump is in trouble. He’ll probably figure out a financial grift with non-US money to stay afloat, but the #brands are running away from him, which is going to make US media stuff difficult.

There's a really dumb tendency in this country to think "everything is different here from everywhere else, that stuff doesn't happen here and even if it does it's not the same thing." American exceptionalism isn't just for conservative pundits.

...It is also not necessary to characterize the events that transpired as an insurrection, which may strike some as an exaggeration, when the behavior of those who attacked the Capitol fit the federal crime of “seditious conspiracy” (which actually carries twice the ten-year sentence of insurrection). This crime is committed whenever two or more people conspire “by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States,” which is exactly what took place on Wednesday. Also, those who attacked the Capitol did so with the explicit purpose of preventing Congress from carrying out its legal duty to certify the election, thus committing another form of seditious conspiracy: conspiring “by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States.”
Because “seditious conspiracy” perfectly describes the crimes committed on January 6, why not make the straightforward charge that Trump was a party to this conspiracy? Someone can be considered part of a criminal conspiracy even if they did not know “all the details of the crime or all of the members of the conspiracy,” as long as they shared the general objective of the conspiracy, which could be stated in this case as simply as: to use force or the threat of force to prevent Congress and the vice president from counting and announcing certified electoral votes for president on the date and at the time set by law.

Charging Trump with being a party to seditious conspiracy eliminates any First Amendment arguments that he was merely making a speech to a public gathering or expressing his opinion that the election results were tainted by fraud...

Back to the earlier question of why the next major violent rallies could be next Sunday (as Twitter mentioned when banning Trump), I realized that next Monday is MLK Day, so there could be a multi-day chain of events and occupations between Sunday and Inauguration Day.

1. The Presidential salary (and presumably the pension) is 400,000. His annual personal expenses are probably 1000 times that.
2. He doesn’t give a shit about his kids.

I mean he’ll be fine. He’s not going to be homeless. But the attention he wants is gone and he’s going to live with the stench of being a loser for the rest of his life.

Punster McPunisher, Sunday, 10 January 2021 19:08 (five years ago)

Impeachment is cool, no downside

The only potential downside to conviction (that is, the Senate role) is an admittedly horseracey strategic one.

A Trump who can't run again is an influencer and a kingmaker. MAGA nation will evaluate potential candidates based on their Trumpiness or lack of Trumpiness. The dynamic of the primary electorate skews in their direction.

However a Trump who CAN legally run again? And who has declared that he will? That is comedy gold. No candidate who wants to court the base would dare oppose him. That would freeze the field.

He began backing off the idea after learning that running would require him to release a new round of financial documents that would make him vulnerable to his ongoing criminal and civil investigations and lawsuits, according to two Republicans close to Trump.

Then came last week.

In interviews, more than half a dozen Republicans who had supported or worked for Trump say the president isn’t likely to run again, though he may tease it. If Trump changes his mind again and chooses to run, some said they would urge him not to, while others hope he’d be talked out of it.

“I think nothing is going to happen,” said a Trump friend. “He won’t be around in 2024. He’s not going to run. He’s going to fuck around and say he’s going to run. … He’ll tease. I don’t think he’s ever going to say ‘I won’t run.’ He just won’t run."

I still think far too many people overestimate Trump's support. When it's polled, it's not possible to separate support for him from support for whichever warm body is currently de facto head of Republican party. So many people dislike him but like tax cuts, the fantasy of overturning roe v Wade, the seating of conservative judges, etc etc. Him being an utterly heinous human and an incompetent executive is as much evidence that millions will support whomever is the R candidate as much as it is (or moreso) evidence that Trump's cult of personality supercedes all.

I think the jury's still out on whether deeply indebted, potentially criminally prosecuted, disgraced trump, turning 75 years old this year, continues to be much of a force or not. He could be a rush limbaugh type figure. I'm sure he could still command followers, but it's inevitably going to be smaller. People are drawn to power and he's about to lose a lot of it.
