xps part of the reason I ask is because of situations like that currently faced by water protectors here in MN, where oil pipeline workers (ostensibly ordinary people, not pols or cops) follow activists around and threaten them, try to run them over or run them off roads, show up at their homes at all hours, etc.

In re the comment about "they're not coming to your house," tbh targeted home assassinations seem like a more real threat to me than either outright civil war or a nationwide fascist takeover. I keep telling people that a bunch of small militia groups, or even large militia groups, can't take over Rhode Island, much less the U.S., but small militia groups absolutely can wage a long-running insurgency including killing individual political/civic/community/media leaders.

p much why i get nervous about mucking it up with strangers. I got threatened by some crazed ex-military guy (he was a radio operator yet talked about his service like he was Seal Team 6), and I realized moments later that my voter registration with my active address was online. I had it removed but there's many other places he could find it with a unique name like mine.

I had a very unhinged dude (who posted under a moniker) in a neighborhood facebook group come at me with threats, and though it was 99% likely to be bullshit I decided enough mixing it up with those people online.

the "who is in on it" piece is the scariest part. it's nothing new in this country - obviously, we've had (and still have) law enforcement/government agents that are part of white supremacist groups. our own President is a racist white supremacist. that's horrifying enough as it is, esp given the sheer volume of police that are right wing extremists and racists.

but now add on top of that high ranking military officials, possibly the ATTORNEY GENERAL OF ALABAMA, and other people installed in key places that were either willful participants in a coup, or were ok sitting idly by while it happened....just makes you wonder if you can root them out in time to prevent something even more devastating occurring.

I know this is old news but it demands repeating: the rot goes all the way up to the top branches of the Federal Government: Ginni Thomas, wife of SCJ Clarence Thomas, personally funded the transport of these "fine folks" from rural states. There's no way that Clarence Thomas should remain in his "impartial" position with that degree of absolute rot in his own home.

It seems to me passing the impeachment now but holding off sending it to the Senate is too much gamesmanship. It happened now, it deserves immediate response, deal with it up or down while the outrage is still fresh. An impeachment trial won't be any less disruptive to Biden in 100 days than right at the start, and that way it's off the agenda and out of the way.

I saw someone float the idea of invoking the 14th amendment, too, specifically section 3:

Section 3

No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Dunno if that applies to the president at all, but it certainly applies to just about everyone else in gov.
