idk dyou not think you give at least as good as you get on blasting terms?

Not to attack, man, but theres a few that really do seem to expect full blaster privileges but could do with throwing some of that energy to shields a bit.

Fair enough.

Did I hear right a few weeks ago that the census hadn't been returned right so the corrupted data being presented had a chance to be reviewed or recollected instead of being taken as verbatim. Just saw a mention of GOP in census year so was thinking that at least their incompetence had provided a get around.

Hope they do wind up with some valid data at least, knowing whta the consequences of seriously wrong stuff would be.

The interesting tension for impeachment is that future R contenders would love to clear Trump from the 2024 field, but voting for impeachment would likely remove that contender from the 2024 field.

Me, I hope the next two years for Republicans looks like the end of Reservoir Dogs, but I have a feeling I'll be disappointed.

Impeachment (slight return) is so good because it forces Republicans to choose now - tie themselves to the mast of Q lunacy, or anger the crazies? It’s lose-lose

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 January 2021 15:14 (five years ago)

I had a very strange and disturbed sleep last night. This may sound a bit paranoid, but I had something almost like a half-awake fever dream, where an extremely intense image of Lindsay Graham yelling "How could this happen?! How could this happen?!" repeated endlessly in my mind, as though I were having some kind of psychic premonition. When I woke up I remembered Graham saying last year "If you’re a young, African American or an immigrant, you can go anywhere in this state, you just need to be conservative, not liberal." And my general impression of him as being two-faced.

I started to wonder more about who might have been in on it, how far it goes, etc. The first day I experienced shock, and now the darkness of this is really sinking in. 100-some-odd congressmen OPENLY supported overturning a democratic election, Josh Hawley openly threw up a white power fist -- how many might have covertly supported the idea of a violent capitol breach?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2021 15:20 (five years ago)

147 lawmakers plus all the judges Republicans have appointed in decades plus all of capital interests plus all of the Religious Right and their followers, just for starters? I'll admit it's a few people. They've been doing it right out in the open the whole time though.

it sounds like clyburn’s calculation is that democrats will need republican votes for some things, so let’s get that taken care of first before we fuck them. maybe that’s the best way to go? genuinely don’t know

Maybe Clyburn is scared, because weren’t the rioters in his private, non-marked office? That scared the shit out of me when I read it.

Wow. Rep. Clyburn says rioters somehow knew where his unmarked office is and showed up there on Wednesday.

Something I wrote on twitter on Friday:

In retrospect the die was cast in '16-'17, when the President spent months decrying the results of an election *that he won*, while none of the GOP's "principled conservatives" stepped up to challenge him on it, allowing lazy media hacks to frame [election integrity] as a narrowly partisan issue.

Bit more on what the implications of a senate trial at the start of Bidens presidency would be https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/09/nancy-pelosi-democrats-impeachment-456924

I don’t get this. The dems run the senate after the inauguration. They can make the trial 24 hours if they want.

Manchin did a lot of walking back on that “absolutely not” comment about $2000. Wonder if they’re already making deals.

the "who is in on it" piece is the scariest part. it's nothing new in this country - obviously, we've had (and still have) law enforcement/government agents that are part of white supremacist groups. our own President is a racist white supremacist. that's horrifying enough as it is, esp given the sheer volume of police that are right wing extremists and racists.

but now add on top of that high ranking military officials, possibly the ATTORNEY GENERAL OF ALABAMA, and other people installed in key places that were either willful participants in a coup, or were ok sitting idly by while it happened....just makes you wonder if you can root them out in time to prevent something even more devastating occurring.

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Sunday, 10 January 2021 16:14 (five years ago)

xxxp I guess that's a good question? Admittedly I *am* conflating conservative/Republican/white supremacist actions on a political & civic level with whether or not there's a risk of physical attack by the individuals who are propagandized by their rhetoric. Idk, can you say more?

I mean sure, I don't think the guys in the 6MWE and Camp Auschwitz tees are coming to my neighborhood tomorrow. Or to my parents neighborhood in DC - it's too far to walk from the Capitol. Although my dad, formerly clergy, has gotten antisemitic death threats a couple times in the course of his life so who knows?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2021 16:18 (five years ago)

xps part of the reason I ask is because of situations like that currently faced by water protectors here in MN, where oil pipeline workers (ostensibly ordinary people, not pols or cops) follow activists around and threaten them, try to run them over or run them off roads, show up at their homes at all hours, etc.

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Sunday, 10 January 2021 16:19 (five years ago)

for example this anishinaabe activist

Leaving the Mississippi River tonight, 2 pipeline workers followed me for 40 miles - 1 was shining their brights & tailgating, the other kept hitting their brakes.

Standing up for the water is dangerous. Surveillance, harassment, threats to personal safety are commonplace.

In re the comment about "they're not coming to your house," tbh targeted home assassinations seem like a more real threat to me than either outright civil war or a nationwide fascist takeover. I keep telling people that a bunch of small militia groups, or even large militia groups, can't take over Rhode Island, much less the U.S., but small militia groups absolutely can wage a long-running insurgency including killing individual political/civic/community/media leaders.

Also it's the exact template used by the KKK for years.

I mean, right now I'm no one. If I somehow got embroiled in some public spate over something though, I could be targeted just as easily as anyone. It's happened to similarly anonymous people.
