If Democrats can clone Obama every 8 years they can successfully counter that, though.

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:06 (five years ago)

everyones got a permanent majority u just slice and dice this and that demographic mix it with some money and bake it, which is a great plan until a psycho reality host blows up yr spot

lag∞n, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:07 (five years ago)

You can't clone a politician, let alone create a bespoke, genetically modified clone. Trump was a unique figure, and a big part of his appeal WAS the insanity. In theory, some other successful demagogue could come along. That may very well happen. But it's not a formula.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:07 (five years ago)

I wouldn’t be confident the democrats would win if Sean hannity or tucker Carlson decided to run. Their rural idiot market is large and those two are sophisticated enough to retain some suburban tax vote. Their problem though is that the GOP is pretty widely seen as an insane criminal enterprise this week, and it might take a few weeks for that waft to go away.

i think what could be copied about trump is admitting that america is deeply fucked and promising to restore glory

hillary was dead as soon as she said america is already great

lag∞n, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:10 (five years ago)

In all seriousness the 2022 and 2024 attack ads for the democrats write themselves. Just show the gop candidate praising trump, and then cut to trump on January 6.

mike davis's take on where they're at now

map, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:13 (five years ago)

I saw that earlier. I really like Mike Kelly but this is idiotic:

“What was essentially a big biker gang dressed as circus performers and war-surplus barbarians – including the guy with a painted face posing as horned bison in a fur coat – stormed the ultimate country club, squatted on Pence’s throne, chased Senators into the sewers, casually picked their noses and rifled files and, above all, shot endless selfies to send to the dudes back home. Otherwise they didn’t have a clue.”

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:17 (five years ago)

that definitely seemed like a take at first but as more details emerged it quickly became a bad take. The news cycle moves fast.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:19 (five years ago)

The rest of the piece is fine!

People who talk about replicating Trump's success seem to understate the thing where he is a person and a personality that has been unaccountably shoved down the throats of Americans for the better part of four decades.

Meat Chew All the Way (Old Lunch), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:21 (five years ago)

The Republican Party are people, my friend and they aren't all dead.

Shit, they still hold 50 seats in the US Senate and ton of governor's offices and state legislatures. Swing states are still able to swing. What they don't have atm is a platform, because they all they stood for this election was Trump and whatever the fuck drooled out of his skull. Platforms are a dime a dozen.

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:23 (five years ago)

a big challenge for replicating trump is he came up outside the party apparatus, he had big fame and his own money, the party would never purposely create a candidate like that the big donors dont like trouble, also he took them by surprise everyone thought he was on the verge of falling off the whole time, but now they know about the concept of a trump

xxxp Back on Nov.7, the New Yorker published this long stroll through the Republicans, talking in various ways about life after Trump, often w some relief:
https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/the-republicans-without-trump Also a long-ass stroll through the Lincoln Project, but that's another story: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/10/12/inside-the-lincoln-projects-war-against-trump

dow, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:27 (five years ago)

Funny how 50000 or so votes to Biden in a few states gets you from "my God the Dems couldn't even win the Presidency against the worst President ever" to "my God the Republican party is finished"

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:27 (five years ago)

tbf there is the whole coup situation too

lag∞n, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:28 (five years ago)

xp I think the Trump formula is actually pretty easy: celebrity + hope + bigotry. Trump's insanity is a double-edged sword; it helped him build a cult but also lost him some votes. If they want to replicate his success without the insanity, all they need to do is find another racist, sexist celebrity who's willing to make an endless series of false promises.

Just feel like every election generates the same sort of overreactions you see after every game in a playoffs series.

Funny how 50000 or so votes to Biden in a few states gets you from "my God the Dems couldn't even win the Presidency against the worst President ever" to "my God the Republican party is finished"

it's amazing how Trump managed to badly expose every flaw of our political and electoral system

frogbs, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:31 (five years ago)

There's also the whole thing where Trump, Q, etc. have told everyone that the Republican Party are also all traitors and globalists.

But memories are short and there are always unforeseen swings. Republican party was dead until Reagan, then Democrats were dead until Clinton, etc.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:32 (five years ago)

One thing you definitely have to factor in is the grip the GOP still has on state houses in a census year (plus who knows what fuckery happened in the census). Gerrymandering will continue to skew things. Also the 6-3 SCOTUS majority could make some decisions on electoral issues that hurt democrats.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:34 (five years ago)

There's a shit load of dumb selfish nationalists in US so until that changes Republican party isn't going anywhere

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:34 (five years ago)

prob not that easy

I think the hard part is going to be replicating the particular kind of celebrity Trump had in his reality TV days, where he was seen as aspirational and an authority figure in a way that was apolitical.

Lily Dale, Sunday, 10 January 2021 04:35 (five years ago)

From the fall of Nixon and onward, conspiracy nuts and kooks have been inside the GOP telling their voters that elements of the GOP aren’t sufficiently loyal/kooky. That’s part of the way their operation works in keeping politicians in line.

Containing the blame may not be as easy as hoped, even w that big orange mug:
The Southern Poverty Law Center is calling for an investigation into the role a group headed by Alabama AG Steve Marshall played in organizing a rally at the U.S. Capitol that turned violent, resulting in five deaths and the takeover of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

Marshall said earlier this week he has ”directed an internal review” after reports that the policy branch of the Republican Attorney Generals Association -- a branch headed by Marshall -- played a role in organizing and promoting the protests around the U.S. Capitol Building. Marshall said that decisions were made within that group without his authorization but did not specify further....The SPLC Action Fund issued a news release Saturday saying that the Alabama Ethics Commission and Alabama State Bar should investigate the matter, not Marshall and the RAGA. RAGA was way into that (already skeevy and floundering) Texas AG's suit vs. states where Trump lost.

jeez, it looks like the crazy ass "lead rioter" (btw, has he been found/charged yet?) was very, very close to getting inside the senate. like, very, very close.

this is the photographer:

Looking again at the video I took of the mob storming the Senate, there’s a moment when the lead rioter looks right for a second, before continuing to follow the officer left, away from the immediate entrance to the Senate. This happened at 2:14. pic.twitter.com/8oetsPvhIb

lots of new details in this new post article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/inside-capitol-siege/2021/01/09/e3ad3274-5283-11eb-bda4-615aaefd0555_story.html)

Amid the mayhem, a large group of senators were secretly led to a room in a Senate office building. Stenger was with them, and the furious lawmakers peppered him questions.

“How does this happen? How does this happen?” demanded Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.)

Stenger could not muster much of an answer, practically inaudible as he dispiritedly debriefed the senators. “He was talking in circles,” Graham thought to himself.

Sen. Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va., called Stenger’s attempt to field that question “absolutely pathetic” and further reduced confidence in the room. As Graham pressed for a better explanation, Stenger’s voice got weaker and smaller.

“Here’s your mission: Take back the Senate,” Graham told Stenger. “Whatever you need to do, do it. We’re not leaving this place. We’re not going to be run out by a mob.”

Finally, the Senate sergeant at arms sat down amid the others in the room, saying to no one in particular: “I wish I had just retired last week.”
