Anyone got an M1 yet?

i've been using a new m1 mac mini for about a month now. feels good!

the m1 architecture compatibility stuff has been somewhat annoying, but not too bad. and some of the 32-bit applications that were broken by upgrading to big sur actually work now on M1 (i'm assuming Rosetta 2 is doing its magic there)

Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2021 20:23 (three years ago) link

...If Rosetta can do that, why not just put in mainline Mac OS X for Intel?

Nhex, Friday, 8 January 2021 20:33 (three years ago) link

not sure how consistently it works. but it's worked on at least a couple of Steam games i have that previously failed to launch

Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2021 20:35 (three years ago) link

WTF are you serious 32bit apps work again? That's crazy.

I don't really need a new computer but figure by the time they're onto the second iteration of whatever's coming next I'm pretty excited.

ok now i'm feeling paranoid so let me just say SOURCE NEEDED on myself there. i mean it's true for a couple steam games but

Has anyone been using an M1 Mac with Adobe CC through Rosetta 2? I've heard conflicting things about how well it runs? Specifically Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Alba, Thursday, 28 January 2021 18:07 (three years ago) link

Very interested to know, given what's currently sitting under my bed, and who it's for, and what she'll be using it for :D (Another 17 days to go until birthday, so shhh).

(She'll also be using DaVinci Resolve for Saturday classes, and that already has an M1-optimised version).

Michael Jones, Thursday, 28 January 2021 18:10 (three years ago) link

There’s a native beta of Photoshop which is apparently good; the Intel one works OK but can’t export as .gif. Lightroom is native. No issues listed for InDesign or Illustrator.

afaict it’s a novelty Apple Watch case and is just non functioning plastic/silicone

way to piggyback a tweet off of a behance or w/e prototype tho

I know the M1 MacBook Pro isn’t much faster than the Air but Amazon is selling the base level one at a $100 discount at the moment, ie $1,199. For just $200 more than the Air I think I’ll go for it. Better battery life and speakers, slightly more powerful graphics and the Touch Bar might be useful in Adobe apps, right?

Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 14:42 (three years ago) link

Went for it. But then not before deciding to up the SSD to 512GB and throw in three years of AppleCare+. So with sales tax it was suddenly $1,800 instead of $1,199. Arrives on Wednesday.

1st gen of new hardware makes the extra warranty a wise decision I reckon

assert (MatthewK), Sunday, 14 February 2021 17:51 (three years ago) link

I too was sucked in by the low price of the base Macbook Air M1, but then I bumped up the RAM and HDD and got AppleCare...

no regrets though, it's a fantastic laptop... super fast, great keyboard, no fan

The only thing wrong with my 2014 mbp is the battery

calstars, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:38 (three years ago) link

well, one issue I'm dealing with... I get massive battery drain (like it'll drop to 0% battery in 4-5 days) when the laptop is closed/in sleep mode, haven't been able to figure out why yet

fbclid=fhAZ3l (f. hazel), Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:39 (three years ago) link

Yeah it might be years before I can justify replacing my 2016 MBP

lukas, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:39 (three years ago) link

Might be tempted by a second gen redesign

calstars, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:41 (three years ago) link

Will spring for a 12” “air” (if they maintain the distinction)

1st gen of toddler around the apartment also a key factor in my decision-making.

Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 19:42 (three years ago) link

Had some sweet bowers & Wilkins speakers back in the day. A toddler pushed in the tweeters

calstars, Sunday, 14 February 2021 19:47 (three years ago) link

16yo daughter delighted with M1 Air (16GB). But also thrilled with Pokemon trading card folder, and glorious 8-bit personalised platform web game (genius, koogs!), and other birthday things and, well, I can show her how slick Illustrator and Photoshop are on this thing another day, right?

Michael Jones, Sunday, 14 February 2021 20:01 (three years ago) link

I stuck with 8GB, partly because I’ve been convinced by people saying how hard it is to max out 8GB with the M1 chip, and partly because we’d have had to wait 3 weeks for a 16GB build.

Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 20:53 (three years ago) link

I got 16gb and lol 2tb

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:04 (three years ago) link

what’s the personalised platform game?

this happened to me too (with B&W floorstanders!) and i popped them back out with a vacuum cleaner

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:13 (three years ago) link

I’m less worried about the size of the SSD as in practical terms the difference between 512GB and 2TB is minimal to me: my total files total more than 2TB so when I’m needing access to all my media files I’m always going to need to plug in my external HD anyway.

Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:28 (three years ago) link

> what’s the personalised platform game?

in lieu of a birthday card i wrote this

bundle for racial justice and equality on ITCH.io: search and destroy

although the full version is 16 levels and includes hazards based on the kids' designs from over the years (although not as many as i'd've liked)

koogs, Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:45 (three years ago) link

oh wow

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:45 (three years ago) link

Koogs, it is the best birthday card. She accessed it via the email link on Pam's Chromebook so the Mac was just forgotten about for an hour...

I went back and forth on 8GB vs 16GB and, in the end, I figured it was worth the wait and the cash to maybe future-proof it a little. First tech support call tonight: "I keep getting booted out of Roblox." It's not the Mac, it's the crap broadband.

It shipped from the factory on Dec 29 with 89% battery. After two weeks in the care of UPS and four weeks under my bed, it was instantly-on with 65%. That seems encouraging.

two weeks pass...

iposted this iPhone question on the iphone thread to deafening silence, so trying again here:

I have had a 1st generation 64g SE which I bought when it released in 2016 and it is basically dying: dropping calls, now on its third battery it is spontaneously powering down or draining spontaneously, not properly updating apps. i need to get something new more or less this week. i'm already jammed into the apple ecosystem so i guess i'm getting another iphone.

I buy my phones in cash up front and always try to get whatever's newest so that it will last the longest amount of time without getting completely outdated, then get the extended coverage. If it isn't already clear, I intend to not upgrade anytime in the foreseeable future beyond this purchase. I don't give a fuck about phone fashion or bells and whistles, I just need a functional phone that performs at a reasonable speed and works. I am perfectly happy with the small screen of my SE; I just use my pad if I need a larger screen on the go. I'd also like something that I can rely on for the next five years or so without having to upgrade just because the current phone won't play with apple's latest updates.

I'm looking at the iphone 12 mini and the new iphone SE, both at 128g. 2 year coverage inclusive, the SE is $600, the 12 mini is $970.

Is there any really good reason i need to drop another $370 on the 12 or will the SE keep me happy? Given that my SE lasted five years, is there any reasonable doubt that the new SE will be unable to function on whatever apple throws at it through 2026?

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:01 (three years ago) link

I don't know the tech specs for the SE and have no idea if the latest iteration updated anything on it; for that reason alone I would tend towards a 12

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:04 (three years ago) link

no, get the SE. it's great and the camera will be huge step up for you. the differences between the 12 mini and the SE are more incremental.

the only reason to get the 12 mini is if the SE is not small enough for you.

if you do want a very small phone you should get the mini soon because it seems like it's the worst selling phone they've ever made and i doubt it is long for this world.

i don't think there's any reason to think the SE will be less supported than the mini.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:06 (three years ago) link

xp djp the new SE 2 is under a year old and is very different to the SE 1.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:08 (three years ago) link

ah see, this is why I should not be listened to

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:09 (three years ago) link

the only reason to get the 12 mini is if the SE is not small enough for you.

this is not true so let me add a couple of things:

imo the substantive major differences between the 12 mini and the SE 2 (apart from size) are the camera (the mini's camera is generally better, has real optical zoom and "night mode" which i know nothing about), and the 12 mini doesn't have a home button. both phone's cameras will be massively better than your current phone's.

i generally prefer iphones with home buttons, but you get used to the new way. the button on the SE 2 is a big improvement over the button on your old SE because it's not actually a real button, which is good because button dust is a point of failure. it's weird when you first try to press the button when the phone is off and you realise it was never a real button this whole time.

buttons!

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:16 (three years ago) link

I do appreciate that they added all the swipe gestures to older iPads that still have the home button. Nice to have one set of gestures that work everywhere

mh, Monday, 15 March 2021 21:21 (three years ago) link

hopefully they’re not listening to me right now, lest they give me the buttonless nondescript hunk of glass that I swipe and yell at in perpetuity

mh, Monday, 15 March 2021 21:22 (three years ago) link

it’s probably what I deserve

mh, Monday, 15 March 2021 21:23 (three years ago) link

I have both the SE 2020 (personal) and the 12 mini (work) and was a longgggg proponent of the 2016 SE as my daily driver.

The 12 mini has a bigger fullwrap screen and the camera is better. The 12 mini has supposedly a faster processor but I am pretty lowtech on mobile and cannot tell the difference.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:44 (three years ago) link

this is helpful, thanks. I will likely get the SE.

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:07 (three years ago) link

I've had the 2nd-gen SE for 10 months now, and it's perfectly fine, but I've dropped it more than any phone I've ever owned. I'm glad I bought a screen protector for the first time in my life, because there's a massive scratch on there right now (which I can always peel off when I get sick of looking at it). I think the combination of larger handset with rounded edges has caused the trouble - I don't seem to be able to get on with that. Luckily, WFH for a year means I've just been clumsily juggling it onto the sofa or a rug rather than down stairwells or onto rail tracks. YMMV, as they used to say on Usenet.

The 12 Mini looks just the ticket (straight edges, smaller body, larger screen), though not keen on Face ID.

Both should be current for years. 6S is still getting 14.x.x updates and that turns six years old soon.

Michael Jones, Monday, 15 March 2021 22:25 (three years ago) link

The other difference between the SE and the 12 mini is the screen tech. The 12 has LED and the SE has an LCD. Which is perfectly fine.

calstars, Monday, 15 March 2021 22:29 (three years ago) link

i take it you are one of the 30 people in the world outside apple HQ who do not use a case xp?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:32 (three years ago) link

i don't mean to boast, but i once went caseless for a couple years, with a SE. only dropped the phone once. it did break the screen, though, when it happened

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:35 (three years ago) link

honestly, by the time it happened, i almost wanted to drop it. but to drop it on accident, of course (and i did). i felt like i had won 35 "double or nothing" bets in a row, and i was sitting there deciding between keeping the 400K or REALLY starting to make some money. it was basically like uncut gems

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:37 (three years ago) link

:)

I have a cheap, clear TPU-silicone case for the SE Part Deux. Maybe it's part of the problem. I should try the caseless challenge. How worse could it get?
