I think people in this thread should take a moment and think about why an unambiguous "more White people should be under surveillance" statement from a Black man turned into a discussion about how White people can't be surveilled because it would hurt Black people, therefore we must find another solution that protects White people from being surveilled.

Like, even in the realm of hypothetical venting you guys protect yourselves. Allies don't exist.

Shower WV with pork barrel projects, who cares, frankly the state needs an infusion of everything and it's money well spent on almost everything except the coal industry.

What is the upside for Manchin to do this? His constituents aren't exactly rolling in dough at this point.

i may be totally misunderstanding lagoon here, but there is no standard definition of terrorism. but as i have understood it, at least since i became a leading expert on the topic by taking a course on it in college and then never thinking about it again for the last 15 years:

terrorism almost always includes a political objective. it's not terror for the sake of terror. it's terror for the sake of a political objective. again, i may have completely misread lagoon upthread, sorry if i did.

― Karl Malone, Friday, January 8, 2021 1:05 PM (five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

yeah i mean theres no one official definition but it was always understood to be trying to scare and intimidate the general populous for political aims by attacking soft targets, usually because those doing it didnt have the resources to wage direct war, the famous asymmetrical warfare, so burning down a church is terrorism, but burning down a courthouse is not

i think the fact that one has to have a whole conversation about what it means shows how ultimately its not that great of a term and is generally just deployed... to terrorize people

Before this gets buried in the pace, thanks for posting this DJP. A lot to think about this morning and this is on my list.

this country's going so far to the left you're not going to recognize it

― difficult listening hour, Monday, September 18, 2017 8:53 AM (three years ago)

i think its greatly underrated how far left the country has already shifted, only problem is it hasnt really penetrated the halls of power, its gonna take some sort of big fight

Sorry Manchin's stupid grandstanding took over for a minute, yes DJP's point is excellent.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Friday, 8 January 2021 18:22 (five years ago)

More white people should ABSOLUTELY be surveilled but the FBI has known that for at least 20 years and all the papers and recommendations have been buried and soft-peddled into meaningless rhetoric so as not to have to do anything about it. It seems reasonable (to me?) to at the same time demand that the EXISTING LAWS be applied to white supremacists/conspiracists/LEOs/etc and also to ask that we not legislate additional punishments for protesting against the conditions of the system we have, which will be inequitably applied?

No one is defending white people. It's just pretty glaringly obvious, based on historical fact, that any increase in police and surveillance resources goes into harassing and murdering Black and brown people.

If what you're saying is that you WANT more surveillance of white people that might root out these murderous Nazis, I totally agree with you! But that isn't the way it has worked or currently works, and it's worth pointing that out.

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 18:23 (five years ago)

Some Defense Department officials have expressed anger that political leaders seemed to be trying to get the Pentagon to do the work of Congress and cabinet secretaries, who have legal options to remove a president.

That's reasonable but also, if existing laws were applied the way they were supposed to be applied, we wouldn't have hate crime legislation.

Listen to yourself for one goddamned minute and think about who you're talking to.

Totino's Fortnite Training Room (DJP), Friday, 8 January 2021 18:25 (five years ago)

I think there was a small percentage of people involved who could more justifiably be considered domestic terrorists, rather than labeling the whole mob as such. Whoever planted the bombs. The ones who went in in full tactical gear carrying wrist restraints planning to kidnap some people. But maybe I’m off base here?

epistantophus, Friday, 8 January 2021 18:26 (five years ago)

Am I ignorant of history? Am I stupid? Am I not Black enough to understand how this country works? Which one of those is it?

Totino's Fortnite Training Room (DJP), Friday, 8 January 2021 18:27 (five years ago)

almost everyone in this country is under nearly constant surveillance to some extent, that may be a semantic argument tho, do i think the fbi should take a closer look at these white insurgent organizations, yes i think its badly needed and theyre an existential threat to whatever freedoms we have, dan i think we may have just gotten two ongoing conversations tangled, sorry for not taking you point more seriously

lag∞n, Friday, 8 January 2021 18:30 (five years ago)

i would say i a white i dont really want the fbi to surveil me more even tho i do often wish death upon various politicians online

lagoon, I did not have an issue with your contribution to the intertwined conversation and I agree with your distinction between "terrorist" and "insurrectionist" even though I do think "terrorist" is not a de facto meaningless word. I appreciate the apology and accept it but it wasn't necessary.

Totino's Fortnite Training Room (DJP), Friday, 8 January 2021 18:38 (five years ago)

DJP, I want to apologize, in sincerity: I really wasn't trying to invalidate what you said, or do some sort of galaxy brain defense of white supremacist assholes. I can never understand your frustration and anger, and was merely trying to just raise an issue that you obviously know about. It was inappropriate. Apologies.

fwiw the fbi is happy to surveil some white people, if youre having any sort of leftist meeting they will try to an intern over, even if its as white as a ski mountain, having said that their true passion lies in infiltrating muslim student groups and so forth, which points to the deeper problems with our law enforcement apparatus

lag∞n, Friday, 8 January 2021 18:40 (five years ago)

a year before i was born, FBI agents broke into my parents’ house in blount county tennessee - in the absolute middle of nowhere, no houses for miles around - in the middle of the night, waking them up in their bed, shining flashlights into their faces, and asking them to confirm their identities, saying their names to them. it turned out they had confused my dad for his best friend, a minister who had married a couple where one of the partners was in jail for nonviolent protest. my dad thinks it’s because he and his friend both had beards and were both ministers and both moved in the same circles. but who knows.
