do the inauguration on Zoom who cares

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:41 (five years ago)

Trump conceding the election and telling his supporters to back off (even if it did look like a hostage video) is probably going to keep a lot of them away. what exactly is their goal now?

frogbs, Friday, 8 January 2021 16:42 (five years ago)

139 House Reps and 8 Senators STILL voted against certifying Biden. If it was just those 2000 idiots that'd be bad enough, but they've got enough powerful supporters, true believers, and straight-up cowards on their side. Beer Hall Putsch indeed...

Nhex, Friday, 8 January 2021 16:43 (five years ago)

suspect it would be pretty tough for them to pull off another exercise in unpreparedness at this point, plus the inauguration im guessing is run differently than your standard event

lag∞n, Friday, 8 January 2021 16:44 (five years ago)

i am more worried rn about what shenanigans are gonna happen on the 19th and 20th and if we're going to have the Keystone Kops on the lawn that day

I have a feeling this will not be a traditional inauguration.

Boring United Methodist Church (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:46 (five years ago)

One thing is for sure: he will be flaunting his inauguration crowd size to Biden's until death's final rattle.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:46 (five years ago)

It should be noted, simply, that inaugurations can also happen indoors -- there's long been precedent for that due to the weather, Reagan's second was held under the Rotunda. So if security demands something similar, there you go. (The flipside is the risk of COVID but there you are.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 January 2021 16:47 (five years ago)

I don't think it will be a traditional one either, but if we've learned anything from these last four years (boat armadas, pickup parades, endless rallies, etc etc) is that these dipshits can't get enough of gathering in large groups to show off who has the most Trump merch so I don't think his hostage video is enough to stop them from gathering in D.C. anyway.

Also: Congress can impeach a president after his term expires.

proud boys thread? it's a canada/us joint effort by the looks of it

Yesterday was an act of domestic terrorism.

The Proud Boys helped execute it.

Their founder is Canadian.

They operate in Canada, right now.

And, I am calling for them to be designated as a terrorist organization, immediately.

They couldn't secure the capitol, a building, with several hundred lawmakers inside from a largely unarmed, out of shape mob of dimwits. I fail to see how they will secure an outdoor space from such a mob if it had a core of armed people with an actual plan.

i need to remember this myself, but it would be wise to start screenshotting tweets rather than linking them and continuing to even infinitesimally feed back into the base evil that is contemporary twitter. if we're rubbernecking, might as well do it without giving them the numbers

74M people voted for Trump

Do you think 74 million people are going to vote for "some Republican who is not Donald Trump" in November 2024? I don't.

I guarantee you the inauguration is not going to be outdoors. It doesn't have to, there's no law or anything that requires it to be outdoors with a parade, it's just tradition.

Punster McPunisher, Friday, 8 January 2021 16:58 (five years ago)

I heard at least 3 different rioters at the Capitol say that they hoped to find Vice President Mike Pence and execute him by hanging him from a Capitol Hill tree as a traitor. It was a common line being repeated. Many more were just talking about how the VP should be executed. https://t.co/fxHREouEWF

I don't see Trump losing his stranglehold on the party anytime soon. There's no one even remotely capable of filling that void of attention and spectacle and petty drama in his stead. I know you can read the GOP's capitulation to him as a means to an end, letting him be a vortex of insanity while they still get their judges and tax cuts, but I still think they're utterly terrified of alienating his supporters, who certainly make up enough of the GOP electorate right now to determine the outcome of elections. and by this point I think a lot of these people aren't really Republicans in any coherent sense of the term, they're Trumpians, they're a cult in thrall to this single idiot's every utterance and whim.

Is the idea that terrorism as a concept should be stricken from our vocabulary altogether or are there still particular acts that would qualify?

The reality is that nearly all domestic terrorism in the US is committed by white nationalists. Yes, you can count on the government to both overstep while completely failing to identify the correct targets, but that doesn't change what this is.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:06 (five years ago)

I'm not clear on why we shouldn't consider these people domestic terrorists. Just because they didn't successfully kidnap or execute anyone?

Sorry if this got posted already (reloading these threads is a nightmare). Cruz to a Houston TV station yesterday:

"The President's language and rhetoric often goes too far. I think, yesterday in particular, the President's language and rhetoric crossed the line and it was reckless. I disagree with it, and I have disagreed with the President's language and rhetoric for the last four years."

because it will just lead to an across the board loss of rights and increase in the power of the police state for examples see the last 20 years, also its worth considering if terrorism is any sort of meaningful or useful term
