I would laugh very hard if Hawley was thrown out of the Senate over this

Totino's Fortnite Training Room (DJP), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:17 (five years ago)

The main thing that I feel might move the needle here is that Trumpists at this point have it in for republicans at least as much as democrats, largely thanks to POS POTUS, and everyone in the Capitol two days ago was equally under threat. As noted previously, many of these fuckers aren't going to waver on their positions until something affects them starkly and directly. Clearly, the Cruzes and the Hawleys didn't learn a goddamn thing but I can't help but feel like a lot of GOP congresspeople who've been going along to get along might finally be waking up to the nature of the rough beast they've been feeding for the past four years.

The Biden administration will understand what happened as a further justification for seeking to govern from the right and prevent structural change and any redistribution of wealth and power, not that it is in need of justification for doing what it has promised and what he was put in power to ensure.

But the performative part is worthwhile! It's true impeachment will keep Trump center-stage for a bit longer, but not in a good way for him or his supporters, and it forces Republicans to defend Trump when they'd rather be issuing 6 press releases a day about the looming Marxist catastrophe of the Biden administration.

I too as a lay person look at "sometime next week" and hear my teeth grind into powder, even as I remember a year (!) ago the first impeachment was a result of months-long work. Fortunately, the only thing worth investigating here is how much federal property the insurrectionists destroyed and how the president's words resulted in four deaths.

There is no universal law of nature or politics that all parties always move relentlessly rightward

No. But there is a universal law that internet leftists will always claim that any leftward movement is either fascism in disguise, or not good enough. As demonstrated by several posters here on a more or less hourly basis.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

Republicans haven't even really had a chance to start up their anti-President Biden beat yet, because they haven't acknowledged him as the winner. So they're even starting off behind on that front, on top of losing the Senate. This is all objectively bad for Republicans. It's OK to say so.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:22 (five years ago)

the house needs to impeach, throw it to the Senate and make those craven motherfuckers go on record for history and see who supported American fascism and who didn't

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:22 (five years ago)

i would just like someone to face consequences for their actions for once and if it happens in any way shape or form i'm pretty happy considering we live in a completely failed state with no accountability to begin with

that's why i kinda roll my eyes at a block of text from the abolitionist law center about this, they don't care about impeachment and idk why they would even address it, the office of the president is inherently racist and evil!!! (and i agree with them!!!!!!!!)

early-Woolf semantic prosody (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:24 (five years ago)

i'm enjoying tipsy's doses of perspective, as i agree this should be profoundly embarrassing and party-ending for republicans. i hope it is

Oh absolutely, the performative aspect is a key part of the game, to be sure. It just seems a lot quieter and, as we've already seen, there is just enough air for folks like Graham to let their spines start slinking away again. I guess I was hoping for more of a full court press to keep the GOP on their back feet, from the outside it feels like they are being given too much time to work on twisting the narrative. And the Dems have always been bad about letting them have that space and vacuum to do so.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:27 (five years ago)

It won’t be party-ending by any means, and they will be back to calling Biden a communist as soon as they can, but they have not had a good week. I think that Frank Luntz story from Tuesday about how the GOP was about to have a very bad 48 hours turns out to be the most prescient thing of the week.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:27 (five years ago)

it won't happen unless they are actively ground into dust. the focus needs to shift from trump to cruz, to hawley, to romney and mcconnell and marsha blackburn and all the little shits who will now start pretending that they've had a moment of clarity. they're all guilty. they applauded him, excused him supported him, raised money for him, looked the other way while he pissed all over the whatever moral fabric american society had left

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:28 (five years ago)

Jon I understand your frustration but Congress moves extremely slowly on everything, I wouldn't take a day spent reeling as a sign that Dems plan to do nothing over this. Articles of impeachment are already being drawn up and I would expect them to pass in the next couple of days

The part that sucks is that he's going to just wind up pardoning himself and his entire family, so ultimately there will be no consequences after all

frogbs, Friday, 8 January 2021 15:29 (five years ago)

I think "this could have been prevented had you impeached him in January" should be said a lot by every Democratic Senator

Totino's Fortnite Training Room (DJP), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:30 (five years ago)

totally. but they didn't because they are on his side. have always been on his side. they're the party who 'loves' rioters. the party of racists. the party of grab 'em by the pussy. the party of trump. the party of millionaires and polluters. the party of funnelling public money into their own hotels. they should never be allowed to hold power anywhere ever again.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:30 (five years ago)

There's a difference between a lack of surprise and numbness that table's excerpt fails to grasp (and I'm not picking on you, table). I mean, it's looking likely that, thanks to the Georgia wins, we will get the $2000 or the $1400 difference, among other things. I don't wanna be coldly political, but it looks like, after this wweek, Joe Fucking Biden will have a honeymoon after all.

I mean hell, had they impeached him in January there is a strong chance they would have held onto the Presidency. Stupid fucking morons cut off their noses to spite their faces at the expense of the rest of the country and anyone with half a brain can see it, even if that half is diseased with QAnon bullshit.

Shame them. Wave their legacies in their faces. Never let them forget about it. Boot the ones who actively encouraged this and vote out the ones who passively encouraged it.

I know technically this means Romney ends up being the last Republican senator standing (he did vote to convict on one article). I dislike him a lot. I am a lot less terrified of a Republican Party where he is a centrist viewpoint rather than on the left. (You all know what I mean by this, stfu in advance)

tipsy OTM about Bret Grote.

Regarding the future of the Republican Party, I thought this thread was interesting:

Since Jan. ‘19, the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has asked GOP voters if they identify more as supporter of President Trump or as a supporter of the Republican Party. In almost every poll, more Republicans identified as supporters of Trump than of the Republican Party. 1/5

— amy walter (@amyewalter) January 7, 2021

Basically, the split in voters who identify as "pro-Trump" vs. "Republican" mirrors the proportion of Republican House members who voted to object to the electoral college results.

i would love to be surprised about this and i dont think its totally impossible as the gravity of the events may force their hand but politicians like all groups eg the police dont have a huge appetite for investigating themselves, its not in their best interest

I sent an email to Schumer's office asking him why he is waiting on impeachment and that I can't wait to vote for AOC over him.

i think trump is more likely than anyone to —face consequences— maybe not literally for this or even for his acts as president but he has a lifetime of white collar crime behind him and a lot of people who want to see him fall, which is not to say hes def gonna be criminally convicted but he has a lot of court ahead of him

lag∞n, Friday, 8 January 2021 15:49 (five years ago)

Given his age, relative resources, track record, and the paucity of prosecution of white collar crime in general, I doubt he spends one second in jail of any kind.

Jimi Buffett (PBKR), Friday, 8 January 2021 15:52 (five years ago)

And I say that with the acknowledgment that the NYAG case is likely a slam dunk in the sense that they will have two sets of documents (mortgage and tax returns) with wildly different valuations for the same properties).

And who's gonna want to do business with anyone named Trump going forward? In the US, anyway. I'm sure there are plenty of foreign markets for the kids to exploit, but here in the US?

The story I saw a couple of days ago - and no idea if this was accurate - was that one of those barriers was opened and some of those protestors were let in because they were reportedly on the guest lists of some of the congressional assholes.

"Excuse me officer, I'm on the guest list."
"OK, just climb through that window over there."

I disagree with this - if the GOP voted to remove him it's more likely Biden would have won 400+ EVs. I can't think of anything more likely to depress Republican turnout than removing their most popular figure and replacing him with fucking Mike Pence.
