boom

One joke going around South America today is that the US coup failed because there was no US Embassy in Washington DC providing logistical support.

So I filmed this video today. I shot it in a D.C. neighbourhood as Trump-supporters were leaving downtown after the protests and riots today. Apparently it went viral after I posted in on my Instagram @westhrin So here it is, Twitter! #guyonporch #womanincar pic.twitter.com/bmMUS48Blz

En dan.. de videobeelden van Jort Kelder vs. Pete Hoekstra. #Op1npo pic.twitter.com/eVpJXK3xB3

— Rowan (@RowanTorres) January 7, 2021

Pete fucking Hoekstra, US-ambassador in the Netherlands and known Trump buddy, trying to wriggle his way out of this by saying what happened this week "happens every four years". When he gets confronted that that is baloney, he says he's deeply offended and just wants some respect, lmao.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 8 January 2021 11:18 (five years ago)

This is the same Pete Hoekstra who has said that people were "burning politicians in the streets of the Netherlands" btw

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 8 January 2021 11:20 (five years ago)

After some sober reflection upon Deepfakegate and time spent speaking with my pastor, I will concede that a more likely scenario is that, even after being warned in no uncertain terms about his potential legal liability, Trump still dragged his feet to the podium like a petulant teenager and proceeded to dither and prevaricate in front of the camera as always, leaving the WH A/V Club to hastily patch together a two-minute statement that both looked and sounded coherent from something like 2-3 hours of raw footage. And they just forgot to turn off the video editing equivalent of motion smoothing when they pasted all of those 2 second fragments together.

Cool crowd sourcing in that thread to ID some of these idiots

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 13:23 (five years ago)

I've been puzzled by that photo too, the rioters had cuffs but the capital police didn't apparently.

BrianB, Friday, 8 January 2021 13:24 (five years ago)

In that thread they show a riot bag the capitol police had with a bunch of restraints in it

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 13:31 (five years ago)

I'm not blaming the capital police for inaction. It's becoming increasingly obvious to me that the rioters thought Trump and the military were going to back them up and Trump was just trying to start a reichstag fire with their lives.

BrianB, Friday, 8 January 2021 13:38 (five years ago)

A lot of blame need to go toward Capitol Police leadership

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 13:42 (five years ago)

The security of Congress is entrusted to the US Capitol Police, a federal agency that answers to Congress. It is routine for the Capitol Police to coordinate with the federal Secret Service and the Park Police and local police in Washington, DC, before large demonstrations. The National Guard, commanded by the Department of Defense, is often on standby too.On Wednesday, however, that coordination was late or absent.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 13:45 (five years ago)

It wasn’t merely late or absent though—it was refused by capitol police when offered.

early-Woolf semantic prosody (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 8 January 2021 13:47 (five years ago)

let's say purposefully absent

I cannot stop thinking about how close the 1-2-3 in the line of presidential succession, VP-Speaker-Pro tempore came to being physically harmed on Weds. The terrorists had operable bombs, killed an officer and ransacked difficult to access areas of the Capitol. We need answers.

While we’re improving security for the US Capitol, maybe we can also be bolstering state Capitol security because this is getting crazy

The great thing about the lawsuits many of these principals will face is that unlike Trump they will likely be seen through fruition.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:25 (five years ago)

Ginni Thomas also led a campaign to identify and oust federal employees whom she deemed disloyal to Trump. She met with the president at the White House to provide him with a list of names she compiled. https://t.co/3KqZzgYTmY

Yeah, she is a loon.

The story I saw a couple of days ago - and no idea if this was accurate - was that one of those barriers was opened and some of those protestors were let in because they were reportedly on the guest lists of some of the congressional assholes. First, if that's true, then said congressional assholes should pay. Second, if true, they never should have been let in at all while shit was getting crazy, because once the police opened a barrier for anyone they might as well have opened it for everyone.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:29 (five years ago)

lol waht?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 14:31 (five years ago)

insurrections have guest list! who knew?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 8 January 2021 14:31 (five years ago)

That was something I saw in response to some clip of the cops opening a barrier for people. Who knows, but it wouldn't be the first time one of these assholes invited a white nationalist to hang.

I just saw that the day-of there were 68 arrests and 56 police were injured. We're going to learn more and more from this in the next days.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:33 (five years ago)

Also don't forget however many guys were off-duty cops who apparently flashed their badges to get in.

Looking at the way the fall-out from all of this is going, as much of a shitshow as it was and as lucky we are that worse things didn't happen, this seems like it's going to be a giant gift to Biden and the Dems in general, tbh. They get to impeach Trump all over again, which is going to be a hell of a scarlet letter for him, and the worst of the GOP caucus start off the new administration at best wrongfooted.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 January 2021 14:37 (five years ago)

Speaking of Sidney Powell, sort of curious how this most erratic lunatic of a lawyer will handle a real lawsuit that demands a response greater than flinging her own shit.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:42 (five years ago)

I'm sure she'll have no trouble finding good representation lol

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 January 2021 14:44 (five years ago)

By flinging her own shit, were I to guess.

Meat Chew All the Way (Old Lunch), Friday, 8 January 2021 14:44 (five years ago)

xps is this a gift for them? Did impeachment actually gain them anything last time? I mean, they should still do it just to uphold some sort of "law and order" and theoretical decency, but politically I'm not sure they gained much. Dems are generally not scared of being primaried compared to the right, the pitchforks don't seem as sharp.

Nhex, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:46 (five years ago)

Can't/shouldn't people start going after Lin Wood with defamation suits too? I assume that wholesale online charges of pedophilia isn't protected by free speech.

clemenza, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:46 (five years ago)

threab

As a comms person this is really important to me.

Language becomes policy! If we say we have a "terrorism" problem (even a white one), lawmakers will give us "counter-terrorism" solutions. All of those will expand policing & surveillance that will ultimately harm us.

xpost Actually, I just saw that Lin Wood is representing Powell!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:48 (five years ago)

It's a gift in the sense of putting crazy asshole Republicans on the defensive at exactly the point they would be gearing up to try to gut anything Biden sends their way. Which doesn't mean they won't try, of course, I'm not imagining any kind of "coming together." But their brand just got hammered in a way well beyond usual partisan warfare.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 January 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

L. Lin Wood, a lawyer who has worked alongside Powell on post-election lawsuits and who says he is representating her in connection to defamation matters, called the lawsuit an attempt “to censor speech or try to intimidate people from telling the truth.”
“I haven’t seen the lawsuit, but I don’t have any concerns about Dominion,” he said in an interview.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

And every time one of these GOP assholes runs again, the ads directly linking them to actual riots and death and sedition are at the ready. "Do you want more years of this?!"
