Among the terrible things I heard yesterday when Linda Chavez called in to MSNBC: she's trying to hide with fellow House members, many of whom refused to wear masks in closed quarters, requiring her to leave when shooting still going on.

Mick Mulvaney to CNBC: "Those who choose to stay, and I have talked with some of them, are choosing to stay because they're worried the President might put someone worse in.” But I’ve talked to WH officials who chose to stay because they don’t want to lose their health insurance.

ok some (i swear) non contradictory thoughts. there is of course intense argument about all this but i'm struck by a few things at once:

Ashli Babbitt, the q-addled woman who was shot breaching a door in the capital, should not have been shot. it should not have come to that at all

i can't mourn it because that part of my psyche is completely cauterized at this point, and i don't think movements like that end except in blood, frankly. yes yes, she fucked around and found out. but the instant glee and throwing the empty term "terrorist" around is making me a little uneasy. the War on Terror has wrecked everyone's brains

all of the lavish "less lethal" violent means that the many, many LE and security agencies in DC have at their disposal -- all the shit we saw all summer -- were totally absent. they can physically control central DC corner by corner if they want to. morning-after claims from law enforcement that they didn't see this coming are lies, and grounds for a complete reorganization

BLM/protestors have been yelling for years now that cops exist to maintain a given social order by violence -- and this lesson is only now being learned by the absolute worst people on the right. that little nazi pissant Fuentes tweeted "fuck the police" yesterday. cliven-bundyism will grow.

THAT SAID - protecting elected officials from an insurrection that is literally banging down the door *is* for sure a justifiable use of lethal police power. the question has to be, why did they only leave themselves their last resort? you all know why!

Supposedly about an hour ago.

I know he's slime, and he shouldn't even be on air, etc., but John Bolton just gave a pretty reasonable explanation on CNN of why the 25th is a risky idea. Basically, one side draws up papers saying you're not fit to stay in office, Trump replies you're wrong, I'm fine, other side says no you're not, then they have 21 days in which the matter goes before congress. And for those 21 days, it's not clear who's in power, because there's no way Trump would step aside. I totally agree that getting Trump out of there asap is the best--safest and most just--course of action, but that explanation, if accurate, gives me pause on the 25th.

iirc from what I read, his ban was slated to end after twelve hours contingent upon his deletion of yesterday's offending tweets but would remain in place otherwise. So I assume it will remain in place.

i watched the video and a bizarre and confounding detail is there were cops standing right behind her while she was trying to break down the door, you cant actually see what she was doing the camera doesnt pan until after shes hit but the only way that shooting wouldve been justified imo is if she hada gun out cause there was still a glass panel door and a bunch of stuff barricaded in between the shooter and her when he fired

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2021 20:29 (five years ago)

i was a bit confused by that as well - the cops being right behind her

covidsbundlertanze op. 6 (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 7 January 2021 20:30 (five years ago)

clearly no communication between the two groups of cops which contributed to the situation looking much worse from the shooters perspective than it prob actually was

well yeah but the contradiction is that the location of legitimate power and its legal continuity (if you think such a thing exists) resides in the physical persons elected to have it!

the people storming the doors knew this, that was the whole point. they were trying to physically prevent the certification of electoral votes

there is still a weird inescapable whiff of royalism in the practice of "representation" i guess
