how about we don't

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:26 (five years ago)

Honestly should be some investigations down the road as to which companies printed up those shirts emblazoned with "Civil War" so they don't get supported by anyone else. Judging by the signs these numbnuts have waved, the shirts seem a little more professionally made than I would expect.

I’m amazed how many of those idiots are filming themselves committing crimes. I know we’ve already discussed upthread their backwards thinking - but almost all of them have their cameras out!

Most of their "movement" online exists online. If they don't post it, it didn't happen. The real world is just a meme-staging area.

ONLY exists online, that should say.

Because they don't get punished! it's a feedback loop. Hence Rick Perlstein suggesting the message to more MAGA assholes is just to do it again, because the stakes are so low. And they will do it again.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:28 (five years ago)

Nuking would mean the white fascists won. Nope. Not gonna happen.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:28 (five years ago)

they literally made t-shirts

iirc there was a washpost series of articles, the week leading up to 1/6/21, that was all about how ultra-right dumbasses were openly making plans on facebook and other public forums to incite chaos in dc

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:29 (five years ago)

And it's clearly not just online. Some asshole GOP rep was all "this was just a few thousand idiots out of millions of Trump supporters." Is that supposed to make me feel better? Safer?

that's the zazzle.com quality that we've come to expect

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:29 (five years ago)

what -- doesn't amaze me, per se, but amazes me that it is just being let slide, is that people are simultaneously claiming that the protests are actually antifa, and that antifa people go to great lengths to hide and obscure their identity and generally not film themselves

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:30 (five years ago)

permaban/unfollow anyone who claims the protests are antifa imo

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:31 (five years ago)

The 25th Amendment is a copout. It is a press release that puts the onus on the President's own Cabinet members to do something while members of Congress go home rather than hold the President accountable directly.

this is 100% otm.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:32 (five years ago)

I don't follow anyone who claims the protests are antifa but that doesn't mean I don't read every few minutes something about how rep. himmler (r) is getting to the bottom of this

People who think this entire thing yesterday was some sort of right-wing failure are fooling themselves. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Sure, some individual dipshits might get identified and suffer minor criminal inconvenience, but this is going to encourage more organized and more violent attempts in the future (i.e. the inauguration), cloaked in the aura of legitimate protest.

to be fair I haven't seen many people claim it was a failure, I've seen people claim it was bizarre (which misses the point)

Yeah, the insurrectionists succeeded.

given the events of yesterday i assume that police and national guard are going to outnumber civilians at the inauguration.

Sen. Cruz, you must accept responsibility for how your craven, self-serving actions contributed to the deaths of four people yesterday. And how you fundraised off this riot.

Both you and Senator Hawley must resign. If you do not, the Senate should move for your expulsion. https://t.co/O2m6T59LYP

i would be more sanguine about the penguin-stuck-in-a-portapotty level of absurdity of yesterday if it weren't for multiple deaths and a lack of consequences for those who engaged in casual violence. This is an invite for a sequel.

Is there any way to punish or even refuse to seat a congressman like Gaetz or Jordon or one of these true-believer wackadoos? Or even Cruz or Hawley, who one presumes knows better but is still being an asshole? Can *they* be impeached?

This may have already been posted, but Cori Bush is calling for their expulsion:

I believe the Republican members of Congress who have incited this domestic terror attack through their attempts to overturn the election must face consequences. They have broken their sacred Oath of Office.

I will be introducing a resolution calling for their expulsion. pic.twitter.com/JMTlQ4IfnR

harrowing but worthwhile (and prognosticatory, as it was posted in November) read by Indi Samarajiva, via Tabs:
https://indica.medium.com/i-lived-through-a-coup-america-is-having-one-now-437934b1dac3

Two years ago, I lived through a coup in Sri Lanka. It was stupid. The minority party threw chili powder at everyone in Parliament and took over by farce. Math, however, requires a majority and the courts kicked them out. They gave in. We’d been protesting for weeks and yay, we won.

No.

I didn’t know it at the time, but we had already lost. No one knew — but oh my God, what we lost. The legitimate government came back but it was divided and weak. We were divided and weak. We were vulnerable.

It’s absurd, because the whole thing seems like a clown show. Coups are supposed to be orderly, authoritarian, not this dumb shit. It honestly seems like a grift to bilk supporters out of more money. You can just roll it back, right? Right? No. No no no. Oh God no.

The tragic thing which you do not understand — which you cannot understand — is that you’ve already lost. You cannot know exactly what — that’s the nature of chaos — but know this. You will lose more than you can bear.

We lost our children, playing at church. We lost our friends, sitting down to brunch. Muslims lost their dignity and rights. Your Republicans have set forces into play they cannot possibly understand and certainly cannot control. And they don’t even want to. To them, chaos is a ladder.

This is the point. You have taken an orderly system balancing a whole lot of chaos and fucked with it. I don’t know how it’s going to explode, but I can promise you this. It’s going to explode.

This is precisely why we have elections, and why both sides accept the results. To keep the chaos at bay. The whole point is that you have a regular, ritual fight rather than fighting all the time. Once one side breaks ritual then you’re on the way to civil war. Once you break the rules then chaos ensues. What exactly happens? I don’t know. It’s chaos.
