Yeah, Lamb really went in. Glad he's in the house.

Fetchboy, Thursday, 7 January 2021 06:50 (five years ago)

Apparently almost a fistfight after Lamb’s speech? Missed that.

In case you're wondering how things are going in the House, there was a minor scuffle between lawmakers. GOP Rep. Andy Harris and Dem Rep. Colin Allred almost got into a fistfight.

Rewatched Lamb. The first shouts from GOP members came after Lamb said this of today's mob:

"For the most part, they walked in here free. A lot of them walked out free. And there wasn't a person watching at home who didn't know why that was: because of the way that they look."

apparently the woman shot in the throat by cops may have been actively retweeting Trump conspiracy theories at the moment of death, based on her Lin Wood / QAnon-filled timeline? still opposed to cop murder/death penalty, but this could be a precedent worth exploring as a deterrent.

Nicholas Cage. Made to look like he’s stealing the Declaration of Independence like in the motion picture “National Treasure” during today’s chaos

So Trump's got away with everything his entire life and now he's about to get away with inciting a mob of fascist morons to attack the heart of American democracy, one of whom got shot dead... because now is not the time for partisanship? Or something? Jesus Christ. Good lunck USA.

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 12:38 (five years ago)

I keep thinking "What if this happened in the UK?" but I'd have to go back to James II to find a similar situation. Or fucking Perkin Warbeck or someone.

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 12:40 (five years ago)

What's the deal with some of the white chuds wearing 'Blacks for Trump' t-shirts? Is that a thing?

J.G Ballard otm (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 7 January 2021 12:43 (five years ago)

MAGAs probably gonna turn on Trump now for giving up:

Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th," Trump said in the statement released overnight after Congress certified his defeat. "I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it's only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again."

What's also interesting/concerning is that the people who can be seen as the active agents in this process of creating and delivering hegemonic bipartisanship are the people who were attempting to delay democracy. ie 'I remain concerned about (made-up) voting irregularities in a number of states, but agree now is the time to come together, so i will out of a sheer spirit of pragmatic diplomacy put these concerns to one side.'.

Biden won for the 735th time

I'm finally tired of winning (to coin a phrase).

Seriously tho I got some badly needed sleep and was relieved by the news that it's over.

But I will never be reconciled with how it transpired.

Is there any discussion in the US about reforming the office of the President itself? You know, from being George III with a few less powers to something less open to potential abuse?

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 12:59 (five years ago)

.... that's House of Hanover, not House of Bush btw.

I once worked on the Hill for a year and was in the Capitol daily. Security gave the appearance of being pretty tight: several checkpoints with metal detectors, police with guns acting aggressively towards absolutely everyone (ie, mostly tourists), etc. Watching these riotors waltzing around without a care in the world yesterday, with seemingly no security in sight, was a surreal experience. I guess the Capitol Police can go back to what they do best: yelling at foreign tourists who walk too close to the velvet rope.

One of the things that I've kept coming back to is that the electoral process whose integrity these chucklefuck GOP congresspeople have challenged is the very electoral process that legitimizes their power. Like they are tacitly yet very forcefully prying open the question of whether or not they should have the positions they hold, on behalf of chucklefuck constituents who will eagerly seize upon that question if they feel so inclined. And just why would you do that unless you are profoundly, profoundly stupid. Trump is profoundly stupid but his challenges were the mindless act of a trapped rat with zero legitimate options open to him. What excuse do these other morons have?

Meat Chew All the Way (Old Lunch), Thursday, 7 January 2021 13:11 (five years ago)

on my last visit Capitol police yelled at me two blocks away for walking the wrong way on a one-way street.

had this same experience, disobeyed a DONT WALK sign on an empty street and had a CP officer literally run up to me from a block away and scream in my face. friend of mine who was a longtime hill staffer got physically ejected when he was arriving for work early one morning and they noticed his staff ID was expired by one day. he asked if he could go to his office and get some papers first and they were like "if you take another step you will be tazed sir"
