xps these assholes are terrorists. Who the fuck planted the explosive devices? Used force to storm a government building with an entire branch of our government inside? Peaceful protestors are not terrorists. WTF.

epistantophus, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:53 (five years ago)

sorry... copaganda

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:54 (five years ago)

Nobody is calling “everyone” terrorists.

epistantophus, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:54 (five years ago)

Are the capitol police generally effective by their own standards? I kind of thought it was a job like TSA inspector, ie a negligible amount of work with gun and a federal pension. Basically mall cops but with better benefits. Nothing like eg NYPD. Is that wrong?

A little bit of humour...

Some people on Twitter think “Via Getty” is the name of a protester as opposed to an acknowledgment that Getty Images own the photos showing the protests... 🙈 pic.twitter.com/s8skXbV95n

epistantophus, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:55 (five years ago)

i have no enforcement powers

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:56 (five years ago)

Half of right wing twitter right now is saying this is a false flag by antifa and the other half is posting pictures from the capitol saying this is me! i'm doing this!

Oh, it gets weirder. I have seen someone saying BOTH. Within one blog comment.

I breached the barriers, scrambled over the scaffolding, got handed up and pushed up and pulled up (and did some of the same for others) and climbed right up to the wall. Antifa tried to bust a window and got stopped and thrown out by the patriots.

Source is http://acecomments.mu.nu/?blog=86&post=391996#c34258216

So yeah we forced our way into the Capitol, merely to have a little cha and to express our righteous and totally justified anger over the stolen election. Hashtag maga, hashtag 1776, lives/fortunes/facred honor.

Oh but any violence and/or property damage was entirely an Antifa false flag operation designed to make us look bad.

Best of both worlds, really. An elegant rhetorical pretzel. Bravo.

epistantophus, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:56 (five years ago)

@ Jordan - I appreciate the analysis you're articulating here. For me the Madison comparison doesn't really feel apples-to-apples - it's been a while but I don't remember that as a chaotic mob clearly intending to do harm. But I agree that a true democratic/public space must have the potential to be occupied and disrupted. All the centrist "not our cherished BUILDINGS!" stuff is total "oof, those 60s radicals, they sure were out of line" stuff, warmed over decades later - respectability politics encouraging people to view establishment and state property as inviolable and sacrosanct.

But that's not to say that some of the people pushing that line aren't also saying other things that are more reasonable about the dangers of volatile alt-right mobs attempting coups, etc. This is a rapidly developing situation so pretty much any hot take at soundbite length is going to be lousy and weak on nuance.

What a fucking day, y'all.

I meannnn I've tried to get into the capitol building for a scheduled conference and been refused entrance because I had, like, a fucking apple in my bag and they made me throw it away. The guards had very large rifles and were scary. And this was a random summer afternoon, not a day of planned insurrection that had been publicized all over the internet.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:57 (five years ago)

xo to Jordan Yeah that's fine, I agree w you, except for the CP who are on camera having selfies taken w rioters and etc. I was mostly trying to connect w Karl where he was coming from.

yeah i don't disagree at all w/ the argument that the cops treated these protestors in myriad different ways than i.e. BLM protestors. that is obvious and it was gross. but just on the concept of whether they could have prevented hundreds of ppl from storming the building... i don't think it's as simple as "if they were doing their jobs this wouldn't have happened"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:57 (five years ago)

I mean how many people inside were made to think their lives were in immediate danger? That is terror!

epistantophus, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:58 (five years ago)

"respectability politics" not the right word, sorry, my brain is fried trying to edit my dissertation while keeping up with this nightmare

my first instinct was to think that being capitol police is probably a pretty cushy job by cop standards, for the reasons you mention, and that their ranks are probably a mix of people who were once "good" and have been rewarded + people who had good connections, and that most of them haven't faced a real situation in years

I mean, just from my neighborhood, the cops were fucking crazy by the police station in Minneapolis and that didn't stop them from burning it

a harsher response could have resulted in more violence, these things are hard to parse

still would like to see those honkies get their heads cracked just on an emotional level though

increasingly clear from a lot of these reports and videos that there were a few organized nutjobs and a lot of lesser nutjobs simply along for the ride
some part of me thinks trump helped organize this in advance behind the scenes, might be a checkbook with "hire rioters" in the about ledger

its def underrated how hard it is to stop a mob although mobs are famous for it too

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2021 01:01 (five years ago)

Basically I assume it’s a mixture of being TSA level in terms of policing plus being police-like in terms of sympathies/shared values to the right. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn something worse, but that seems pretty plausible to me.

If the choice is between violence and letting fascists over-run your democracy I'd choose violence. The police should not have allowed them entry.

I’ve been taken to the back room before and they kind of do! (Although to be fair that USCIS not TSA, but same mallcop with benefits/dmv with a gun vibes)

yeah, i think you're probably right. i'm definitely not very certain about anything today at all. this is a weird moment. like the footage of the lone guard getting pressured up the stairs while frantically calling backup - there's nothing that guy can do, other than get violent, and i don't want that either.

the speculative side of me blames the planners/managers of the capitol police - there is something incredibly fishy about not being more prepared. trump was pushing this all week, it's beyond question. there is video evidence of at least some cops just letting the rioters pass through, because they were white, but that is to be expected for any law enforcement operation. but what happened today seemed to go beyond everyday racism and pointed to something more sinister. #speculation

Really most protesters should be treated with the prudence that these assholes were treated.

^yeah agreed. I’d love a world where a non-militarized police force of Officer Friendlies could serve as light/touch guard rails when protests get a little too spicy. Even if the “protestors” are Trump assholes carrying confederate flags and doing property damage to public buildings.

but that’s just not the world we live in so fuck em and defund em
