ok but this is a false dichotomy. lefty protestors have occupied statehouses too. when people protested scott walker gutting unions by occupying the wisconsin statehouse did you call for those ppl to be arrested? do you think they should have been arrested? beaten? gassed? is the mere act of holding a confederate flag in a statehouse mean that cops should be able to arrest you? i understand the impulse to say yes but understand the cynicism in the way republicans apply laws to democratic protestors. what flags or signs would then qualify you for arrest during a protest on govt grounds or in a govt building? is seeing alt right capitol occupiers arrested worth the repercussions on lefty protestors?

for me it's a big NO on all of those questions. the thing i wanted to see, today, was the rioters being kept out of the building. not even arrested, certainly not physically harmed. just being kept out of the building. if Madison police would have guarded the statehouse and kept the protesters outside in a bullshit "free speech zone", i would have understood that.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:23 (five years ago)

feel like i'm being misunderstood also, but i also don't really make any coherent points so i get it

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:24 (five years ago)

otm; the crux of the thing isn't that they're protesting in the capitol or breaking windows or whatever, but that they are doing so in an attempt to carry out a white supremacist coup

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:24 (five years ago)

like, is expecting capitol police to keep rioters out of the capitol the same as "siding w/ the police"?

(in addition to the ones people mentioned, another recent example would be the people storming the Minneapolis police precinct -- do you think they should have been arrested?)

btw are there really leftists calling for tear gas? i must be following the wrong leftists

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:26 (five years ago)

there's no doubt what side the cops were on today, and they must be held accountable

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:26 (five years ago)

the thing to me thats most —interesting— about the cops actions today is these people have been publicly planning this for weeks and the cops didnt even bother to like schedule any extra shifts, they just do not see these people as a threat

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:27 (five years ago)

Looks like Trump's "take your ball and go home" tweet is working.

DJI, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:27 (five years ago)

Heard a take which didn't seem insane that believe it or not the charge most of these assholes would be, well, charged with is trespassing, and given that is a relatively minor offense that's why the cops didn't dedicate their manpower and resources to executing. So to speak. They were overwhelmed, which itself raises a bunch of questions.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:27 (five years ago)

Regarding police and not arresting the alt-right Nazis:

This is not a double standard. That language is an alibi. Whiteness is sustained through a distributive tension between state power and vigilantism. making and unmaking one another.

xp to Karl: No it's okay, this is a very weird day and it's enraging to see what we've seen happening. I just wanted to say, we don't need to discuss every point now but I wasn't going to dismiss everest's thread out of hand.

― Karl Malone, Wednesday, January 6, 2021 7:23 PM (two minutes ago)

i think it's a bit of a misnomer that the cops "let" this happen today. there is obvious differences in how they treated/interacted w/ these protestors than other cops have w/ BLM or other protestors but if a large group wants to storm a building the cops/security guards aren't going to be able to stop it unless you authorize the use of force. so i don't see how this hypothetical would have played out in reality unless the cops started beating people

people seem to be venting about the perceived double-standard between police reaction to lefty protests vs. fash protests. i haven't seen much "they should crack these assholes' skulls" but i've seen a lot of "if these people were black, they would've been shot"

xp -- I think part of this is (sorry) twitter, where the distinction isn't clear between "notice how the police aren't getting violent when it's a Trump riot, and they should start doing that," "notice how the police aren't getting violent when it's a Trump riot, and they should be like this all the time," "notice how the police aren't getting violent when it's a Trump riot, because they're the same constituency"

just from a uh airborne viral perspective it may not be wise to reconvene, in a building in which hundreds of unmasked hilbillies had just marauded, a congress full of olds

It is absolutely insane that Pence reportedly never left the capital. If indeed he is the one that okayed the national guard, that means he was unable to reach Trump, or Trump was unwilling to make any sort of decision, and the authority was granted to Pence. So yeah, just remove that asshole from office.

If it wasn't for coronavirus, that building would probably have been filled with school children, toursts, etc.

I just asked Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) about this:

it's not like the whole thing was a conspiracy among the capitol police and whoever else, but...they fucking let them in! and...i'm sorry, but there are no locked doors that can be deployed in the capitol? even at the crappy old EPA building we had emergency firedoors that could be automatically deployed on each hallway corridor, as a way to do modular lockdowns of each floor. they couldn't keep these guys from reaching the house floor? it's beyond bad, it's conspicuously weird

IMPORTANT: this is exact moment the siege of the Capitol building began as the two men in front ripped down a preliminary barrier & rushed officers who were behind a 2nd barrier

They then encouraged others to follow their lead. Officers appeared to be taken completely off guard pic.twitter.com/LE0a01PXBi

stet, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:38 (five years ago)

I mean it's that simple. You don't have to wish that the capitol police had beaten rioters with clubs in order to point out that they explicitly DIDN'T DO THEIR JOB. So maybe they shouldn't have that job anymore!

I'm just going to put this out there: a lot of these people probably live in small towns or the suburbs or exurbs with nice lawns and clean garages. The term "hillbilly" places the problem on a despised class status and 'other' rather than deal with the issue that these people are not 'hillbillies,' stockpiling guns on rural property in Montana.

omg first lady's chief of staff is resigning!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:39 (five years ago)

yeah i guess i'm hedging a bit, because i do suspect that SOMETHING very very bad happened. it's just a question of whether it was spontaneous racism (similar to how we saw cops here in Chicago COOPERATING with the fucking proud boys this summer, even fucking coordinating and co-patrolling with them in some cases) or planned insurrection. but i'm hedging because i'm speculating

they should all resign, one after the other, until it is just Trump in the White House and then he can die.
