I guess my feeling is that I want police to leave peaceful protestors alone to peacefully protest regardless of which end of the political spectrum they're on but I'm pretty okay with Capitol police shooting terrorists when they forcefully enter the Capitol regardless of what their political leanings might be.

there is no such thing as peaceful protest that is copaganda

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:11 (five years ago)

xp -- others have basically said what I was going to but I also don't think it's a wild edge case for the takeaway from this to be "all protests should be further criminalized"; biden in part campaigned on that.

i guess i'm just thinking of stuff like this, that seems to fall somewhere in the incredibly vast spectrum between "ACAB" and "i am in the hitler youth":

The police politely holding the doors open for insurrectionists leaving the Capitol building they invaded is actually pretty gutting. Just a reminder of who are considered citizens in America and that Black people were never meant to be considered so. https://t.co/3qQtJtCaMX

Karl otm. We can hate the police for shooting an unarmed man in the back 7 times AND for not arresting a terrorist posing with a confederate battle flag under lincolns portrait in the halls of cogresss.

― BrianB, Wednesday, January 6, 2021 6:54 PM (five minutes ago)

ok but this is a false dichotomy. lefty protestors have occupied statehouses too. when people protested scott walker gutting unions by occupying the wisconsin statehouse did you call for those ppl to be arrested? do you think they should have been arrested? beaten? gassed? is the mere act of holding a confederate flag in a statehouse mean that cops should be able to arrest you? i understand the impulse to say yes but understand the cynicism in the way republicans apply laws to democratic protestors. what flags or signs would then qualify you for arrest during a protest on govt grounds or in a govt building? is seeing alt right capitol occupiers arrested worth the repercussions on lefty protestors? none of this is theoretical. ron desantis wants to make it a felony to block roads but make it legal to hit protestors with cars. he wants to use racketeering laws to prosecute ppl who give money to protest organizations. ppl on the left who side w/ the police when the protestors are confederate flag waving insurrectionists are only inviting compounding force to be used against them or ppl they agree with in the future. what that person said about property destruction is a red herring but the rest of that thread totally has merit. it's absolutely true that liberals calling for arrests and tear gas on these protestors will lead to further retribution against protestors (aka leftists) bcuz the further retribution against protestors was already happening from lawmakers before today even happened. and now we're supposed to be encouraging police force? and think that it won't have any effect on future protests (again, by leftists). no thanks

Yeah agreed, the surveillance and criminalization would be off the charts--the natural political response is to create additional legislation as a reaction and the embattled middle will happily legislate against its own left flank. Curfews similarly make every person into a wrong-doer for going home from work or going to work or being on their porch or picking up their kids and living life.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:20 (five years ago)

all the ppl in this thread being like "well obviously you arrest ppl who storm a statehouse" do remember this happening right? it was less than 10 years ago

MADISON, Wis. — As four game wardens awkwardly stood guard, protesters, scores deep, crushed into a corridor leading to the governor’s office here on Wednesday, their screams echoing through the Capitol: “Come out, come out, wherever you are!”

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:23 (five years ago)

ok but this is a false dichotomy. lefty protestors have occupied statehouses too. when people protested scott walker gutting unions by occupying the wisconsin statehouse did you call for those ppl to be arrested? do you think they should have been arrested? beaten? gassed? is the mere act of holding a confederate flag in a statehouse mean that cops should be able to arrest you? i understand the impulse to say yes but understand the cynicism in the way republicans apply laws to democratic protestors. what flags or signs would then qualify you for arrest during a protest on govt grounds or in a govt building? is seeing alt right capitol occupiers arrested worth the repercussions on lefty protestors?

for me it's a big NO on all of those questions. the thing i wanted to see, today, was the rioters being kept out of the building. not even arrested, certainly not physically harmed. just being kept out of the building. if Madison police would have guarded the statehouse and kept the protesters outside in a bullshit "free speech zone", i would have understood that.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:23 (five years ago)

feel like i'm being misunderstood also, but i also don't really make any coherent points so i get it

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:24 (five years ago)

otm; the crux of the thing isn't that they're protesting in the capitol or breaking windows or whatever, but that they are doing so in an attempt to carry out a white supremacist coup

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 7 January 2021 00:24 (five years ago)

like, is expecting capitol police to keep rioters out of the capitol the same as "siding w/ the police"?

(in addition to the ones people mentioned, another recent example would be the people storming the Minneapolis police precinct -- do you think they should have been arrested?)

btw are there really leftists calling for tear gas? i must be following the wrong leftists

there's no doubt what side the cops were on today, and they must be held accountable
