Baffled that work emails keep rolling in as if this was just any other Wednesday afternoon and not the midst of a coup.

It goes without saying that if any of these people had been Black or brown or not conservative, they would all be in jail or dead.

My dad, who sometimes still capes for cops, even admitted as much on the phone just now.

yeah that's the weirdest thing about work emails.. like my boss just responded in detail about a local news story about cops getting rid of disciplinary records, talking about how the author doesn't interview any police departments about their records management policies to get their perspective and it's all i can take not to reply, screaming, IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME THAT COPS CAN DO WHATEVER THEY FUCKING WANT!

these people who are obviously republicans who are just like ignoring it make me feel fucking crazy.

stupid lol here, but this moment during trump's speech this morning:

“I wonder if he enjoyed his flight in last night,” Trump said of the senator. (Romney was harassed on his flight to Washington, D.C. Tuesday.)

“When Romney got beat, he stands up like, ‘I’d like to congratulate the victor,’” Trump joked, attempting a stodgy Romney accent recalling his 2012 presidential loss.

imagine a guy losing, standing up and being like "congratulations" to the winner! ha! jeez!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:12 (five years ago)

i mean he just stands there and he's like "congratulations!" haa!

I'm emotionally overeating Whoppers malted milk balls.

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:13 (five years ago)

I'm not able to be in front of a TV at the moment but seeing a ton of tweets suddenly that they are just walking these dudes out of the building without cuffs or anything. Is this true?

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:14 (five years ago)

i condone all emotional eating today

dean bad (map), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:14 (five years ago)

i'm just straight up abusing my body, now, and have been for days. i seriously can't live in this state for much longer, this fucking era is dragging me into the gutter

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:14 (five years ago)

Felt really bad about having to teach this afternoon. One of my students wrote in the chat, "there is a riot going on at the Capitol" and I was like, "Yup, this is a day when STUFF IS HAPPENING, I'll understand if you guys are distracted." Wasn't really sure what else to do.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:15 (five years ago)

xxxp: yes, this is clearly a false flag for antifa, who are known for taking selfies with cops and just generally having their faces everywhere during a protest

I couldn't take it. i hadn't worked in an hour or two and the chat was just going on about banalities and I didn't want to 'talk' about it with my colleagues as I don't suspect they have much of value to contribute, but to acknowledge "this is a fucked thing right now and this is my priority atm"

One of my bosses wrote a staff-wide email saying that we can "press pause" on work today if we want to, which is pretty cool.

I work with a bunch of liberal Democrats and it's the same thing. There's definitely an element of "if I focus on this then I can pretend that isn't happening" going on regardless of political persuasion (actually I'm still doing work stuff because the instant I get up from the computer, I'm drinking heavily, and that's not really what I need to do to myself right now)

Flashback Friday!

If @realDonaldTrump were to lose (he won’t) his supporters will go to work tomorrow just as we do everyday. When Biden loses, his “supporters” will likely loot and riot. Tells you everything you need to know! #Trump2020

xp That email finally just came in now, after the school day is basically over, like where was this a few hours ago? The only reason I didn't cancel class on my own initiative is I figured showing my kids pictures of king cake would be a welcome distraction.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:19 (five years ago)

my boss has been pissing me off incredibly but thankfully he just cancelled our afternoon meetings because of all of this

akm, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:20 (five years ago)

I just carried on with work and sending emails like normal this afternoon as much as I could because I know that, for the sake of my well being, I need to maintain a degree of stability at times like this.

And then also I've been drinking like every day for the past year because that is also what I need to do. Finally felt this morning that I could maybe take a break but priorities change, I guess. Feeling you, my increasingly-girthy brethren.

Sounds like the right move, tbh. Even though we ended up letting him duck out early, I really appreciated his teacher keeping things light for them today.

Lily Dale: not sure how much flexibility you have. If I'd still been in the classroom, I think I would have shut everything down and put on CNN.

Fair play! Not calling anyone out for doing this at all, was more speaking to the people that keep emailing and asking me to do stuff NOW NOW NOW.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:23 (five years ago)

I was a couple minutes late to a work meeting this afternoon (it was a technical thing) and someone joked, "I was worried you were off at a protest downtown." lol!

Only after getting out of that meeting could I check the coverage and yeah, that's about when I lost it.

good luck usa

I think the initial shock of it is what got me. once it's kind of sat with me for a while, I can take breaks.

my friend lives in Va though and though she lives not close to washington I called her. idk why I got worried but I did.

feel _slightly_ less contempt for the capitol PD after watching that

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:29 (five years ago)

I live 5 miles from DC, and I'm on a major street a short distance from a well-traveled Metro station. So normally when there's a demonstration or event or whatever, I can look out my window and see people walking to/from the Metro, with signs or matchy shirts or hats or whatever.

I didn't think to look today, but some other folks in my 'hood warned that there were some tactical LARPers roaming. Or, what I would have thought of as mere LARPers before today.

cilantro vs. wade (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:29 (five years ago)

Yeah, I think we can stop calling them LARPers now and just go with terrorists.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:30 (five years ago)

I didn't know anything was going on because I was on a long and intense w4w and then looked at the work emails and people were like "i am free and glued to the television," so i immediately came here because i don't own a television

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:31 (five years ago)

Why doesn't that cop start wailing on the dude with his baton?

There’s one of him and like 30 of them?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:32 (five years ago)

Clemenza: it's an online middle school French class, 7th and 8th graders, and because it's Wednesday it was only 35 minutes long. I've never taught kids that young before this year and I don't yet have a good instinctive gauge of what they can handle, what they can't, and how to talk to them about it. That's why I didn't automatically put on the news. I figured my class, which was basically watching videos about cakes, wouldn't ask much of them and would be a harmless distraction from being glued to the news. Don't know if that came across as reliably normal or callously out of touch on my part, could go either way.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:33 (five years ago)

Don't overthink it. There is no good decisions in this case.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:35 (five years ago)

Totally understand. I always wanted kids to see stuff like that, and loved talking about it, but there are good arguments for letting their parents make that decision (your own job security being one of them).

clemenza, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 22:36 (five years ago)

Seriously. I hope everyone can be compassionate to themselves today of all days. There are no wrong answers for coping with this.
