yeah that's the weirdest thing about work emails.. like my boss just responded in detail about a local news story about cops getting rid of disciplinary records, talking about how the author doesn't interview any police departments about their records management policies to get their perspective and it's all i can take not to reply, screaming, IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME THAT COPS CAN DO WHATEVER THEY FUCKING WANT!

Felt really bad about having to teach this afternoon. One of my students wrote in the chat, "there is a riot going on at the Capitol" and I was like, "Yup, this is a day when STUFF IS HAPPENING, I'll understand if you guys are distracted." Wasn't really sure what else to do.

I couldn't take it. i hadn't worked in an hour or two and the chat was just going on about banalities and I didn't want to 'talk' about it with my colleagues as I don't suspect they have much of value to contribute, but to acknowledge "this is a fucked thing right now and this is my priority atm"

One of my bosses wrote a staff-wide email saying that we can "press pause" on work today if we want to, which is pretty cool.

I work with a bunch of liberal Democrats and it's the same thing. There's definitely an element of "if I focus on this then I can pretend that isn't happening" going on regardless of political persuasion (actually I'm still doing work stuff because the instant I get up from the computer, I'm drinking heavily, and that's not really what I need to do to myself right now)

This is one time I'm thankful to be a parent and have someone else's needs I have to tend to for awhile, helps me from getting too deep into the despair hole.

xp That email finally just came in now, after the school day is basically over, like where was this a few hours ago? The only reason I didn't cancel class on my own initiative is I figured showing my kids pictures of king cake would be a welcome distraction.

my boss has been pissing me off incredibly but thankfully he just cancelled our afternoon meetings because of all of this

I just carried on with work and sending emails like normal this afternoon as much as I could because I know that, for the sake of my well being, I need to maintain a degree of stability at times like this.

And then also I've been drinking like every day for the past year because that is also what I need to do. Finally felt this morning that I could maybe take a break but priorities change, I guess. Feeling you, my increasingly-girthy brethren.

Only after getting out of that meeting could I check the coverage and yeah, that's about when I lost it.

I live 5 miles from DC, and I'm on a major street a short distance from a well-traveled Metro station. So normally when there's a demonstration or event or whatever, I can look out my window and see people walking to/from the Metro, with signs or matchy shirts or hats or whatever.

I didn't think to look today, but some other folks in my 'hood warned that there were some tactical LARPers roaming. Or, what I would have thought of as mere LARPers before today.

Yeah, I think we can stop calling them LARPers now and just go with terrorists.

I didn't know anything was going on because I was on a long and intense w4w and then looked at the work emails and people were like "i am free and glued to the television," so i immediately came here because i don't own a television

Clemenza: it's an online middle school French class, 7th and 8th graders, and because it's Wednesday it was only 35 minutes long. I've never taught kids that young before this year and I don't yet have a good instinctive gauge of what they can handle, what they can't, and how to talk to them about it. That's why I didn't automatically put on the news. I figured my class, which was basically watching videos about cakes, wouldn't ask much of them and would be a harmless distraction from being glued to the news. Don't know if that came across as reliably normal or callously out of touch on my part, could go either way.

Don't overthink it. There is no good decisions in this case.

Totally understand. I always wanted kids to see stuff like that, and loved talking about it, but there are good arguments for letting their parents make that decision (your own job security being one of them).

Seriously. I hope everyone can be compassionate to themselves today of all days. There are no wrong answers for coping with this.
