I think (or hope) this is more like the apex of the mainstreaming of the Proud Boy/Q wave. I think some of this shit gets re-sidelined, the same way the Birchers were post-McCarthy. Doesn't make it go away, but it is possible for a political party to move in directions other than ever-farther-right.

i am sort of desperately hoping that the past few days of wanna be fascists finding themselves suddenly gasp in opposition to a police force that will not call their manager for them might make everybody rethink unquestioning trust in the cops but i am also still waiting for the free subscription to ranger rick that i signed up for via the publisher's clearing house and i'm increasingly thinking that might not work out either.

This has come up before but these movements are so extremely online and so very prone to conspiracy thinking that it really feels like it would be easy for some quality trolls to infiltrate their playgrounds and get them turning against each other and basically destroy their movement.

They try to make one big play today and they are just imploding.

I got the impression from actual news networks that while it's gotten ugly at times, as of yet, the Capitol Police have held, but....who knows. in these scenarios I often do find the 'on the ground video' reports to be more helpful than news networks, who are usually behind.

I did see Pepper spray being sprayed like perfume at the thug protesters, which shows the cops haven't completely abandoned their terrible behaviors for the PBs

proud boys and even generally the militarized wignuts are a small group but its always going to be the case with the extreme of any movement, but the fact that they are part of a huge movement Q and whatnot is what could allow them to be effective if they ever got their shit together, but obvs just assuming this shit will continue to grow on its current trajectory is prob foolish

btw read an interesting thing that speculated that their easy access to weapons gear etc has actually hindered their progress in becoming a real radical movement, encouraged more of a larping approach than engaging in real actions that require organization and commitment, they have the alltime worse opsec just constantly being infiltrated and exposed by randos online, trying to recruit people to kidnap the governor on facebook groups etc lol

As protesters marched from the Ellipse to the Capitol, several hundred came up against the metal barricades surrounding the back of the building.

Just before 1 p.m., a group of primarily White men pushed, then toppled the barricades, storming through them to the grassy fields leading to the Capitol.

Several Capitol police stood guard but could not hold back the tide. Hundreds scaled and kicked aside the barricades, yelling “forward!!” as they ran upward.

Some tried to reach the steps of the Capitol, but were stopped by law enforcement. A few who made it through and scaled metal construction structures were tackled by police.

After a few minutes of the crowds yelling “USA! USA!”, dozens of law enforcement descended down the steps to boos.

Capitol Police briefly ordered the evacuations of two Capitol campus buildings — the Library of Congress James Madison Memorial Building and the Cannon House Office Building, both just across Independence Avenue from the Capitol.

Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.), whose office is in the Cannon building, tweeted “I just had to evacuate my office because of a pipe bomb reported outside.” The all-clear was given about 1:50 p.m.

to counter one point made upthread, I do find it though not all that helpful to see the video of someone who may have a vested interest in making the armed resistance look bolder than it is by taking a shaky cam video of a small section of area for 10-20 seconds and adding the narrative OMG I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS, IT'S ABSOLUTE MAYHEM. as with all riots/skirmishes, short video can show a temporary surge that may not be long-lasting or emblematic or what is happening, and likewise, short videos of more sedate moments can be used to misleadingly downplay what's happening.
