I just want to sit back for five seconds and bask in the fact that we will have two D senators from GA. Give me another hit of that shit!

trump was really good at turning out non voters some of them have no doubt become permanently politicized and some will just fade into bolivian

true but he turned out way more for the other side and I think a lot of those people are going to permanently engaged as well

Gheorghe Mureșan

Nah, I wish. This was 1991 and he was still playing in Europe at that point.

the current guy for this on the Bucks is Giannis's brother. we love him so much we don't mind wasting a roster spot on his big bro

I’m hopeful on one or both of these, but we’re asking manchin to vote for less power so it’s going to be tricky. Unless some pompous moderate Republican votes for it?

What do people think are the odds of the filibuster going away? Seems like that is the first step toward anything even slightly game-changing.

probably won't happen with Manchin in the way

it kind of sucks the Dems have to deal with so many different crises in parallel because it really seems their priority ought to be expanding voting rights, adding SC & Senate seats, and getting fair maps drawn before the country becomes permafucked

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:03 (five years ago)

the first step is the dems wanting to do those things

xpost - I mean, surely that's part of the GOP/Trump motivation to make sure Biden starts with as many crises as possible to keep their eye of the ball of expanding voter rights.

Ah too bad

RT @rebtanhs: Republican senators are being swarmed by Trump protesters on the Hill. Here’s an exasperated @SenToddYoung saying he won’t vote against certifying the election.

lmaooo

lag∞n, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:13 (five years ago)

Love the lol understatement of the last graf:

In a Republican-controlled Senate, Jones was viewed as the easiest candidate to get confirmed given his strong relationships across the aisle. Garland was also considered a risk in that it would be difficult to confirm a replacement for him on the appellate court.

But with Democrats expected to have won the majority with a pair of upset victories in Georgia, confirmation issues with other candidates largely dissipated.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:14 (five years ago)

I'm guessing that the Garland nomination wouldn't have happened if Democrats didn't control the Senate, because now Biden can fill Garland's seat on the DC circuit without much trouble.

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:14 (five years ago)

(OK, just read the Politico article, and it basically says that.)

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:15 (five years ago)

Re: statehood, I was in the USVI for the first time last year (just pre-COVID), in St. Thomas. It was beautiful but also made me feel bad because it wasn't some other country's neglected poverty-stricken tourist satellite but our own country's. They should 100% get statehood if they want it. Median household income in USVI is $37k, which is $20k below the U.S. median.

Why is Manchin (III) a Dem?

― pomenitul, Wednesday

West Virginia was historically a radically pro-union state, via the United Mine Workers. Manchin's Democrat affiliation lets him benefit from holdover sentiments from that era, while basically repping for at least half the Republican agenda.

Honestly it is incredible that the spoof (Decker) came out years before the apparent, nearly indistinguishable source of said spoof. This fun fact might blow some political comedy historian's mind in the future.

the very small old lady at the end of that video ned posted is lol

k3vin k., Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:20 (five years ago)

Guam is really, really small -- don't get me wrong, very small patches of lands have been admitted as states for political advantage before, but it would be a little more openly gaming the system then the obvious move of statehood for DC, which clearly wants statehood and which is bigger than Wyoming.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:21 (five years ago)

and the crenshaw one probably had a budget that was thousands of times larger than heidecker's

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:22 (five years ago)

the crazy thing about it is that Decker was modelled after Donald Trump even before he ran for President

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:22 (five years ago)

Makes sense, Aimless, thx. And I certainly wouldn’t want him to be a Republican, I’m just an ignoramus coming to grips with hot takes that paint him as a Trojan Horse.

strong mandalorian vibes from Biden's picks

rob, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 17:27 (five years ago)

I will say, again, that it should be up to Puerto Ricans as to whether they want to be given statehood. Forcing it on them would be just another colonising insult in a history of colonising insults. Same with Guam and the USVI.

On a completely different note, I can't believe that people watched The Apprentice for enjoyment. I remember asking them to turn it off in the Pittsburgh Greyhound station once, and they actually changed the channel for me! (It was a late night re-run). My point being that if one doesn't have a television, then one has no idea that Trump is good at television, which explains some of my shock in 2015-2016. Who has time to waste watching such absolute trash (ie most television)?

He also made the joke that he wanted Trump to run for president and tell obama "you're fired" in a stand up bit prior to running as well. Probably right around when DT was being celebrity birther.

Possible that there's some SCOTUS gamesmanship to the choice:

This move also opens up a DC Circuit seat to elevate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson so to better position her for Breyer’s seat https://t.co/rWY8HNnqL8

there was a fun moment at his rally a couple days ago where he realized that if Dems were really rigging elections that Hillary would have won in 2016, and just left it an open question as to why they didn't
