There's an empty lot down the road from me where 500 sq ft Trump flag weirdos have been congregating every Sunday since the election. Every week when I drive past they seem a little less into the Trump and more into the tailgating aspect. Hoping one buys a projector with the $1400 and they just start watching movies together.

dems are still going to have a tough 4 years imo. People voting against something isn't the same as voting for/believing in you or your ideas.

StanM, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 11:03 (five years ago)

Ossoff now ahead by .4 points as the last bit of DeKalb in-person early vote arrives.
The absentee ballots--tens of thousands remain, perhaps ~55k by our estimates--will likely put Ossoff over the .5 threshold recount tomorrow

Given that 2018 and (tbh) even 2020 felt like stopgaps that only just kept the country from sliding all the way into hell while still allowing the intransigent Garbagemongers On Parade to forward their hateful agenda more or less unabated...this is the first time I've felt a glimmer of optimism for the US in over four years. Just a glimmer, mind, but I'll take what I can get.

They better goddamn well let Abrams take whatever role she wants in the party going forward.

Suffering from a Surfeit of Savoir Faire (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 12:55 (five years ago)

Also: I'm trying to game out where the GOP even goes from here. They've stoked their constituency into believing they could and would continue to behave like sick apes indefinitely but it seems like they're really backed into a corner now. They can't suddenly start acting like sober-minded legislators now or their voters will rip them to shreds, but it would seem that they no longer have the leverage to continue dismantling democracy in bite-sized chunks. Perhaps this is the point where their shitheap party truly starts to become marginal on the national level. Yeah, I've said it before, and I'll probably sadly be saying it again someday after it fails to happen this time 'round.

At the very least, I expect certification of the EC votes to be less of a shitshow than it was shaping up to be (although what happens on the streets may be a whole other story).

I hope there is not even a pretense of comity and that the dems fight hard for every single permanent or semi-permanent thing they can get while they can (DC statehood, federal judges, codification into law practices we've since learned were just based on honor or tradition). Because these GOP assholes are not only not changing, they're devolving in an exclusive and unalterable direction. They had their chance to naval-gaze years ago, they've made their decision. Or at least the lunatics that vote for them made it for them.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:16 (five years ago)

Also: I'm trying to game out where the GOP even goes from here.

they... continue to twist the levers of power to ensure minority rule in the interests of the 1% forever?? like duh

so josh is right, this fragile golden window of opportunity needs to be used to lock in whatever gains we can, on judges, on green new deal, on proper COVID relief, yes all those things but imo particularly on statehood to make it harder for the republicans to pull their bullshit

I also saw some tweets to the effect of "Ruth-kanda is smiling from heaven" and, yes, the Marvel Party will absolutely emerge in the next two election cycles.

Today is gonna be funny

States want to correct their votes, which they now know were based on irregularities and fraud, plus corrupt process never received legislative approval. All Mike Pence has to do is send them back to the States, AND WE WIN. Do it Mike, this is a time for extreme courage!

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:39 (five years ago)

Republicans used every handhold and lever they could get a grip on on to further solidify their power. I only hope the Democrats have learned something from that. This could be their best chance to claw back some power for the long term. They need to make every second of the next two years count. Do away with as much GOP fuckery as possible so it’s harder for them to cheat their way into power going forward. Take advantage of every action that is available to them now to make up for lost time and build some long term advantage. DC statehood? Immediately, before McConnell gets his claws into Manchin. We can’t just let the Senate continue to be tilted unfairly to the GOP. Go after the filibuster, go after gerrymandering, fill every judicial opening, appoint a young liberal firebrand to replace Breyer. Go for the fucking throat, knock them on their asses while they are in disarray, and don’t let go of any lever of power that you have your hands on. Glue your hands to the fucking steering wheel and keep driving. Investigate the shit out of Trump and his enablers and make sure that they face consequences. Do all this while you are fixing things and helping people and guiding us through a recovery from this pandemic. It’s not a choice between one or the other- do it all at the same time while you have a chance. McConnell is not only losing his majority, he also lost his iron grip on his caucus. They are vulnerable now and Trump isn’t going to help the GOP cause- he’ll just be on the sidelines causing chaos and making things worse for them. You have two years- make them count. And turn them into another two years of Senate control, and then another, and then another. No more conservative justices on the SC for a generation.

DC mayor this morning, in an interview with MSNBC, looked encouraged about the possibility of statehood; she gave the impression she had insider info.

Is there any actual legitimate reason NOT to invoke statehood for DC/PR besides crying Republicans?

Nhex, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:52 (five years ago)

no

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:52 (five years ago)

The only legitimate reason would be if the people of DC or PR didn’t want to be a state.

epistantophus, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:53 (five years ago)

But I would assume PR doesn’t want to continue getting treated like an unwanted territory every time the GOP is in power. I don’t think a state would be shit on/disregarded/treated the way PR was during the Trump era.

epistantophus, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:55 (five years ago)

Right, that makes sense. PR just voted yes on a ballot measure (though narrowly, looks like enough want total indepedence) and DC seems pretty strongly for it

Nhex, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 14:01 (five years ago)

I guess the question is- does Manchin vote against statehood because he wants to be the pivotal vote that gets courted by both sides (a short term situation at best), or does he vote for statehood because it takes pressure off him and allows him some flexibility to stay in the good graces of his constituency and stay in his seat longer? I say the latter, but there are a lot of hot takes out there saying how he’s going to enjoy being the most powerful person in Washington, etc. I think that would be extremely shortsighted if that’s the case.
