Wait are hippies The Man now?

DJI, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 00:38 (five years ago)

Ha yes exactly. It's adorable watching them become countercultural now. Jk it's awful cause they're the most whiny drama queens ever.

They elect this absolute shithead because he'll "fight for us" and then cry foul when those fascistic lefties try to undermine him

Let us not forget the Squelching of Bari Weiss.

minor Evelyn Waugh iirc

I love the notion that “society is rigged against people with my values”

Moreover, it's a God-given truth that people with "my values" should always be running things, even if most of our neighbors don't want us running things and voted against us. Any outcome where we are not running things is totally wrong and cannot be accepted under any circumstances.

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 00:45 (five years ago)

idk, just the fact that they are framing in that way means we already won.

DJI, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 00:46 (five years ago)

I mean: “society is rigged against people with my values”

DJI, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 00:46 (five years ago)

I'm gay and a person of color, so I don't know what "society" is other than "Fellow citizens who respect Erykah Badu and Pet Shop Boys."

The War on Christmas was particularly successful this year; no caroling, no church services - mission accomplished!

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 00:50 (five years ago)

trump promised Biden would cancel Xmas, and he did! unfortunately I still had to buy presents for some people

akm, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 00:52 (five years ago)

think Americans, I think Republicans, conservatives, can be forgiven for their skepticism. Because whether or not an election was rigged, it certainly feels like society is rigged right now, from the complete squelching of dissent on college campuses, inside the media institutions, to being lied about the Hunter Biden story, to watching President Trump impeached, every step of the way watching President Trump undermine, his legitimacy questioned. And when you deal with that for not just four years but decades, you start to think, if not an election, the entire society is rigged against people who hold my values.

your values are horseshit and you've put your faith in a narcissistic conman! there is no "squelching of dissent" in college campuses or in the media landscape; people get as much rope as they want to do anything up to run people over because they disagree with them without repercussions! Hunter Biden is a typical sleaze who probably deserves to be prosecuted for SOMETHING but the chances that it has anything to do with the consent or involvement of his lifelong-striving-for-the-presidency father is ludicrous. Your beloved president was impeached for encouraging foreign interference in domestic government! The system isn't "rigged" against you, it's barely functioning in a way where you and your cohort are being verbally reprimanded for being culpable in one of the greatest periods of wanton environmental, cultural, social and ethical destruction in the past century! Fuck you and your so called "values" forever!

Kornacki seeing heavy red districts with low turnout compared to Nov

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:05 (five years ago)

The Dems running one or two points higher in the urban areas than they did in November, that seems like good news

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:07 (five years ago)

I agree that Republican values are bad, and, on balance, I'm happy that the mainstream media tipped the scales for Biden. but they DID tip the scales! Every day the news was a nonstop mixture of actual Trump scandals and silly pumped-up bullshit about Trump. I mean, we even made up (and I used) this insane term called "whataboutism" to avoid our own hypocrisies!

DJI, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:08 (five years ago)

I know we clown on that damn needle a lot but this thing, on the same page, seems pretty nice

I don't know what we should do to counteract the flow of lies and bullshit on social media, but I don't think it's what happened in the last 4 years.

DJI, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:10 (five years ago)

whataboutism is real, or at least it used to me something real. it may be abused by people though, now. actually i have no idea but i should just assume it's now used incorrectly and is confusing. damn

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:10 (five years ago)

Maybe electoral self-sabotage does have consequences, after all. Huh.

I know! I hate it when someone pulls a whatabout on me, but maybe that's just because I'm a hypocrite.

DJI, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:13 (five years ago)

true whataboutism, like "both sides"+"ism", takes place when one of the two things being compared is grossly out of proportion to the other

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:15 (five years ago)

Both races...off to a good start?

Too early and close to be confident

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 01:16 (five years ago)

Seems to be a lot of solid data indicating that Dems are running a point ahead of where Biden was while rural turnout is 1-2 points behind what the Republicans need it to be

Steve the Kornacki showing Warnoff and Ossoff matching or exceeding Biden's numbers in blue counties. Cautious optimism, etc.

I mean....I would argue that many of Trump's scandal were underplayed and that the media went out of its way for most of his term to try to present him as a normal president

they all grew a metaphorical pair when it looked like the writing was on the wall in the last six months or so

Xpost i actually am wary of trusting the needle at all, esp cos of how weird it was in GA. but it's the only real interpretive tool i have atm.

Seems that Ds are overperforming in many counties

like you chastise a friend for tossing a dirty diaper on the sidewalk, and the bad friend says "whatabout the time you threw gum out the car window?"

I misread this as “threw a gun out the car window” and was so confused, because that’s a pretty valid whatabout and also seems like we might not have the entire story

the margins. are slipping rapidly. I hate this. I always tell myself I won’t get my hopes up and I always do

I wouldn't panic too much yet

it's not really known in what order the votes will be counted, coming into this I think most people assumed it would be one of those "red mirage" situations where the GOP was up big early and then mail-ins would be counted and shift the vote blue. this time it looks like the absentees in urban counties were dumped early which is why Warnock/Ossoff were up big to start. now the rural votes are coming in so its tightening. it's all noise at this point, what's important to look at is how the individual counties are doing relative to the presidential election. it appears that Ossoff and Warnock are outperforming Biden by 1-2 points in the big areas. it also looks like the Rs are outperforming Trump in a lot of rural areas, but only just barely. So far it looks good for the Democrats.

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 02:09 (five years ago)

Looks pretty over to me. Congratulations to joe manchin, the most powerful person in America.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 02:20 (five years ago)

I know the needle is unpleasant but it’s less unpleasant than looking at who has the most votes while ignoring what votes remain to be counted.
