Fair ridiculous age to be climbing mountains to be honest xxp

I'm sad Tanya Roberts has actually died now. She would have been an amazing interview subject.

Alba, Tuesday, 5 January 2021 17:51 (five years ago)

Colin Bell aka ‘Nijinsky’.

It is with the deepest sadness and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Manchester City legend Colin Bell.

Albert Roux, the more unassuming of the Roux brothers (and the one that didn't have an absolute bellend for a son).

Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 11:02 (five years ago)

I think he actually did? In that Michel Roux Jr. is his son, not his brother Michel's.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 11:53 (five years ago)

Oh well there you go.

Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 11:55 (five years ago)

Pierre Chappuis, Swiss poet and critic, 90. RIP.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:56 (five years ago)

remember when Man City had an online vote for whom to name a stand after and everyone voted for Colin Bell so it could be hilariously called "The Bell End".

calzino, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 15:00 (five years ago)

tbf he actually was one of their best ever players - pre-Sheikh Mansour. Him and Shaun Goater.

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 15:13 (five years ago)

I've no doubt Man City fans consider him a ledge. But fans of other clubs thought it was a bit of a wheeze at the time, but it was a fail because as far as I know nobody calls it the bell end!

calzino, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 15:24 (five years ago)

Novelist Eric Jerome Dickey.

(xp) Sadly, the Dickov Stand never happened.

Alan Igbon (Loggo in Boys From The Black Stuff), aged 68. Apparently in early December.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 7 January 2021 16:47 (five years ago)

also in GBH: "shall I twat him, boss?"

RIP, he had only had 20 years on me.

calzino, Thursday, 7 January 2021 16:53 (five years ago)

Like Yosser, a Mancunian who didn't *quite* nail the accent, but forgiven because they were all so good.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:07 (five years ago)

Free jazz pianist Bobby Few, who played with Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, David Murray, Frank Wright, Steve Lacy and many others. He also recorded as a leader. He was 85.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 7 January 2021 18:12 (five years ago)

RIP Bobby F.

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 19:06 (five years ago)

Very sad. His playing on those '70s Center Of The World records (and in the Alan Silva Orchestra in the '00s) is brilliant.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 7 January 2021 19:12 (five years ago)

Never heard the '00s stuff but yeah, his work with Center of the World (and with Noah Howard) was amazing. He really carved out his own space, somewhere close to Don Pullen and Dave Burrell but still 100% his own.

Marion Ramsey, best known as Officer Hooks from the Police Academy films.

Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Thursday, 7 January 2021 21:20 (five years ago)

Helen Jackson, last known surviving Civil War widow, 101. Itself a weird tale:

Jackson volunteered as a caregiver to Civil War veteran James Bolin when she was a young woman and he, a neighbor, was in his final years. He appreciated her help, but he couldn’t afford to pay her – so he offered to marry her so she would inherit his Civil War pension when he died. The two were wed in 1936, when she was 17 and he was 93. Jackson told few people of the marriage, not wanting to invite salacious gossip about the arrangement. She kept her name and continued living at her own home even after the marriage, though she still helped care for Bolin until his death in 1939.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 January 2021 23:44 (five years ago)

This relationship possibly an inspiration for Gene Simmons' lyric to Goin' Blind by Kiss.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 7 January 2021 23:48 (five years ago)

Wow

flappy bird, Friday, 8 January 2021 01:56 (five years ago)

I remember reading about her last year because there used to be two surviving Civil War widows receiving government benefits, and one of em died.

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:09 (five years ago)

Or, I guess, the other one died, and now they're both dead.

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:10 (five years ago)

If I'm remembering correctly, one of them was neuroatypical

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:10 (five years ago)

Rather be an old man’s sweetheart than to be a young man’s fool.

Madchen, Friday, 8 January 2021 07:33 (five years ago)

IIRC the last recipient of a civil war pension did die last year - Helen Jackson never claimed it in the end.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 8 January 2021 08:00 (five years ago)

The woman who died last year was the daughter, not the widow, of a US Civil War veteran, who was able to claim a survivor's pension due to being institutionalized. This scenario apparently did not inspire any Kiss lyrics.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 8 January 2021 13:01 (five years ago)

Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Friday, 8 January 2021 21:01 (five years ago)

Yes! However it was with 7 Plus Seven and 21 Up that it turned into the grand project it became. I still think 21 Up is the best one by far.

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 8 January 2021 21:07 (five years ago)

I've loved them all, including the most recent one. I hope someone takes over for it.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 21:13 (five years ago)

RIP. I hope there's someone else on the Seven Up team that has built up relationships with the participants as if not I can't really see it continuing.

Alba, Friday, 8 January 2021 21:14 (five years ago)

Bummed that Apted didn’t get the chance to call The World Is Not Enough 007 Up

RIP. She had a column, albeit one showing her well past her powers, until very recently.

Alba, Friday, 8 January 2021 22:09 (five years ago)

Just heard about Michael Apted. 28 Up was my entry point--hugely important to me at the time (still haven't caught up with 49 and beyond, I don't think--the latest got cancelled here just after the pandemic hit). Like Coal Miner's Daughter and Class Action a lot, too.

The answer we have received to the age-old “Who First: Betty White or Henry Kissinger?” question has conclusively proved that we live in hell.

Gosh - I never realised the connection. I met him (Dick) at a very good event on the history of pirate radio in London in a library in Ladbrook Grove a few years ago.

Also made a fortune from Pigbag. He’s an old friend of mine and was just discussing Denis on FB in the wake of Get Back a few weeks ago.

Sandra Jaffe at 83 ( and her husband who died in 1987), took over Preservation Hall in New Orleans in 1961 and had jazz bands there ever since. The Hall was integrated under their management at a time when New Orleans was segregated.
