Traded in my pro max for a mini, so much easier to hold and use. I’m a one hander I guess

re: Big Sur, i am very grateful that MacOS has now been brought into the Screen Time/Downtime fold. still slightly confusing to select which device you're looking at, and how to time-limit websites, but it basically works, and works consistently across devices, which is the first time this has really been possible in the Apple ecosystem afaik. The ability - as a parent - to remotely and immediately grant requests for time on certain apps BUT NOT OTHERS is huge.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 January 2021 21:03 (five years ago)
i will also say that after 30+ years, Apple Music née iTunes now finally remembers the position of the playhead on whatever track you were last listening to, even across restarts, the app closing, etc. No more scrubbing to find where you were in that 3+ hour Luciano mix you were listening to.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 January 2021 21:04 (five years ago)
30+? exactly how long have I been isolating in my house?!
― mh, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:30 (five years ago)
lol uh yeah i meant 20+ whoops
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:32 (five years ago)
I was so close to loving Apple Music but it doesn't properly sync play counts and Last Played data back to my Mac library. You almost did it, Apple.(I know, 99% of users will never care...)
― Nhex, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:40 (five years ago)
^play count bug irks me as well

Anyone got an M1 yet?
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:10 (five years ago)
meit's fast! but it won't change your life if you are a regular bozo like me
― sean gramophone, Friday, 8 January 2021 16:18 (five years ago)
I use Macs primarily for scores so even though I'm itching to upgrade my machines, I'm not doing it until the larger screens are updated.
― Totino's Fortnite Training Room (DJP), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:19 (five years ago)
I told my wife we should use our $1200 to get her an M1 Mini and a big monitor and she's pondering the idea.
― Motoroller Scampotron (WmC), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:24 (five years ago)
i have the 13" m1 mbp, no complaints but nothing revelatory so far.
― adam, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:03 (five years ago)
i'm still waiting for the february golang release, and then the dominos fall (docker, full toolchain stuff), but tbh i think i'm done waiting.
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:10 (five years ago)
i've been using a new m1 mac mini for about a month now. feels good!
the m1 architecture compatibility stuff has been somewhat annoying, but not too bad. and some of the 32-bit applications that were broken by upgrading to big sur actually work now on M1 (i'm assuming Rosetta 2 is doing its magic there)
― Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2021 20:23 (five years ago)
...If Rosetta can do that, why not just put in mainline Mac OS X for Intel?
― Nhex, Friday, 8 January 2021 20:33 (five years ago)
not sure how consistently it works. but it's worked on at least a couple of Steam games i have that previously failed to launch
― Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2021 20:35 (five years ago)
WTF are you serious 32bit apps work again? That's crazy.
I don't really need a new computer but figure by the time they're onto the second iteration of whatever's coming next I'm pretty excited.
― dan selzer, Friday, 8 January 2021 22:09 (five years ago)
ok now i'm feeling paranoid so let me just say SOURCE NEEDED on myself there. i mean it's true for a couple steam games but
― Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2021 22:39 (five years ago)
Has anyone been using an M1 Mac with Adobe CC through Rosetta 2? I've heard conflicting things about how well it runs? Specifically Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
― Alba, Thursday, 28 January 2021 18:07 (five years ago)
Very interested to know, given what's currently sitting under my bed, and who it's for, and what she'll be using it for :D (Another 17 days to go until birthday, so shhh).
(She'll also be using DaVinci Resolve for Saturday classes, and that already has an M1-optimised version).
― Michael Jones, Thursday, 28 January 2021 18:10 (five years ago)
There’s a native beta of Photoshop which is apparently good; the Intel one works OK but can’t export as .gif. Lightroom is native. No issues listed for InDesign or Illustrator.

I know the M1 MacBook Pro isn’t much faster than the Air but Amazon is selling the base level one at a $100 discount at the moment, ie $1,199. For just $200 more than the Air I think I’ll go for it. Better battery life and speakers, slightly more powerful graphics and the Touch Bar might be useful in Adobe apps, right?
― Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 14:42 (five years ago)
Went for it. But then not before deciding to up the SSD to 512GB and throw in three years of AppleCare+. So with sales tax it was suddenly $1,800 instead of $1,199. Arrives on Wednesday.
― Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 14:55 (five years ago)
1st gen of new hardware makes the extra warranty a wise decision I reckon
― assert (MatthewK), Sunday, 14 February 2021 17:51 (five years ago)
I too was sucked in by the low price of the base Macbook Air M1, but then I bumped up the RAM and HDD and got AppleCare...
no regrets though, it's a fantastic laptop... super fast, great keyboard, no fan

The only thing wrong with my 2014 mbp is the battery
― calstars, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:38 (five years ago)
well, one issue I'm dealing with... I get massive battery drain (like it'll drop to 0% battery in 4-5 days) when the laptop is closed/in sleep mode, haven't been able to figure out why yet
― fbclid=fhAZ3l (f. hazel), Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:39 (five years ago)
Yeah it might be years before I can justify replacing my 2016 MBP
― lukas, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:39 (five years ago)
Might be tempted by a second gen redesign
― calstars, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:41 (five years ago)

Had some sweet bowers & Wilkins speakers back in the day. A toddler pushed in the tweeters
― calstars, Sunday, 14 February 2021 19:47 (five years ago)
16yo daughter delighted with M1 Air (16GB). But also thrilled with Pokemon trading card folder, and glorious 8-bit personalised platform web game (genius, koogs!), and other birthday things and, well, I can show her how slick Illustrator and Photoshop are on this thing another day, right?
― Michael Jones, Sunday, 14 February 2021 20:01 (five years ago)
I stuck with 8GB, partly because I’ve been convinced by people saying how hard it is to max out 8GB with the M1 chip, and partly because we’d have had to wait 3 weeks for a 16GB build.
― Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 20:53 (five years ago)
I got 16gb and lol 2tb
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:04 (five years ago)
what’s the personalised platform game?Had some sweet bowers & Wilkins speakers back in the day. A toddler pushed in the tweetersthis happened to me too (with B&W floorstanders!) and i popped them back out with a vacuum cleaner
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:13 (five years ago)
I’m less worried about the size of the SSD as in practical terms the difference between 512GB and 2TB is minimal to me: my total files total more than 2TB so when I’m needing access to all my media files I’m always going to need to plug in my external HD anyway.
― Alba, Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:28 (five years ago)
> what’s the personalised platform game?
in lieu of a birthday card i wrote this
bundle for racial justice and equality on ITCH.io: search and destroy
although the full version is 16 levels and includes hazards based on the kids' designs from over the years (although not as many as i'd've liked)
― koogs, Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:45 (five years ago)
oh wow
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:45 (five years ago)
Koogs, it is the best birthday card. She accessed it via the email link on Pam's Chromebook so the Mac was just forgotten about for an hour...
I went back and forth on 8GB vs 16GB and, in the end, I figured it was worth the wait and the cash to maybe future-proof it a little. First tech support call tonight: "I keep getting booted out of Roblox." It's not the Mac, it's the crap broadband.
It shipped from the factory on Dec 29 with 89% battery. After two weeks in the care of UPS and four weeks under my bed, it was instantly-on with 65%. That seems encouraging.

iposted this iPhone question on the iphone thread to deafening silence, so trying again here:
I have had a 1st generation 64g SE which I bought when it released in 2016 and it is basically dying: dropping calls, now on its third battery it is spontaneously powering down or draining spontaneously, not properly updating apps. i need to get something new more or less this week. i'm already jammed into the apple ecosystem so i guess i'm getting another iphone.
I buy my phones in cash up front and always try to get whatever's newest so that it will last the longest amount of time without getting completely outdated, then get the extended coverage. If it isn't already clear, I intend to not upgrade anytime in the foreseeable future beyond this purchase. I don't give a fuck about phone fashion or bells and whistles, I just need a functional phone that performs at a reasonable speed and works. I am perfectly happy with the small screen of my SE; I just use my pad if I need a larger screen on the go. I'd also like something that I can rely on for the next five years or so without having to upgrade just because the current phone won't play with apple's latest updates.
I'm looking at the iphone 12 mini and the new iphone SE, both at 128g. 2 year coverage inclusive, the SE is $600, the 12 mini is $970.
Is there any really good reason i need to drop another $370 on the 12 or will the SE keep me happy? Given that my SE lasted five years, is there any reasonable doubt that the new SE will be unable to function on whatever apple throws at it through 2026?
― G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 March 2021 21:01 (five years ago)
I don't know the tech specs for the SE and have no idea if the latest iteration updated anything on it; for that reason alone I would tend towards a 12
