It's def Canadianesque boreality, so I googled a bunch of Scando cities but they all looked richer. Figured it must be Russia and I was right

Also the coal smokestack in the downtown core? Вот где собака зарыта!

I guess the Boxing Day City thing threw me off...for some reason I assumed it must be a pic of a city where Boxing Day is celebrated, even if the pics themselves weren't seasonally appropriate.
But yes, it's definitely Ufa given the train station's gold some and the color of the passenger trains in that area.

Ufa it is!

This is the next image I was going to use if it hadn't been guessed. Seasonally appropriate in this one!

There are certainly a lot of striking photos of Ufa

Not sure if this is pretty easy or not that easy, anyway, here you go.

Japan
Which is not a city, but it looks like Japan

does it now?

Somewhere in South Korea?

Pyongyang?

Thata working off the premise that police car on the left is pretty old, the bus looks kind of old too. The buildings are a touch on the brutalist side and there doesn't seem to any advertizing
― cherry blossom, Monday, 4 January 2021 05:28 (five years ago)
cars in general look on the dated side
― cherry blossom, Monday, 4 January 2021 05:29 (five years ago)
It could be China. Kunming?
― Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Monday, 4 January 2021 07:56 (five years ago)
it's a taxi on the far left rather than a police car. this photo was taken in 2007, so some things may look slightly older for this reason.

Pyongyang cosign
― StanM, Monday, 4 January 2021 09:05 (five years ago)
it's not North Korea.

Dalian?
― partyin' maskless with Rudy G. and Vanilla Ice, it's a gas gas gas (breastcrawl), Monday, 4 January 2021 09:48 (five years ago)
If we're going that route then Shenzhen
― cherry blossom, Monday, 4 January 2021 09:55 (five years ago)
Shenzhen is certainly warmer than Dalian
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 10:51 (five years ago)
Hong Kong has green and white taxis and yellow and red buses and Shenzhen is closer to it. I'm going with Hong Kong
― cherry blossom, Monday, 4 January 2021 11:21 (five years ago)
Yeah I gave up on thinking it was Japan once I re-looked at those distinctive Japanese overhanging direction signs and saw they did not match
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 4 January 2021 11:43 (five years ago)
The street sign there looks like it must feature logograms, but not Japan, so probably China, yeahHorizontal traffic lights are specific to Taiwan, says a random commenter on QuoraI would guess Taipei but it looks too... broad and uncrowded, so I'm gonna guess uh "Taipei surrounding area" (Keelung?)
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 4 January 2021 12:29 (five years ago)
It's not Taiwan, sorry
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 12:32 (five years ago)
Also would point out that in HK they drive on the left
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 12:35 (five years ago)
Last guess: Da Nang?
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 4 January 2021 12:55 (five years ago)
(I'm really hung up on those horizontal traffic lights, and the intracity buses in Da Nang look like that bus, as do the energy efficient lights they are so proud of; not crowded enough to be Hanoi or HCMC)
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 4 January 2021 12:58 (five years ago)
I have been to Da Nang and yes it does look quite like that. But not Vietnam, no.
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 13:03 (five years ago)
I think we might need a clue.
A lot of cities across China have the same layout of road but i don't think i've ever seen a Tier 1 city with so little traffic, even in the mid-00s. It could be somewhere like Nanning.
― Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Monday, 4 January 2021 13:20 (five years ago)
it's China, but not Tier 1 (I would say that if you've been to China this should be evident from the ubiquitous grey mianbaoche vans in the foreground)Don't want to just give it away, but will say that Shenzhen is easily the best guess so far, and that if you look for photos of this city you will usually find quite a different sort of scene.
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 13:29 (five years ago)
This morning I looked for yellow chinese buses and the only image I came across with similar livery was this one: https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/bus-service-in-china-gm458286057-22656726 which is says is Zhuhai; I didn't find another Zhuhai bus with the same colours though, so I gave up. But now I guess Zhuhai.
― Tim, Monday, 4 January 2021 13:38 (five years ago)
yes, it is Zhuhai!
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 13:40 (five years ago)
haha blimey.
― Tim, Monday, 4 January 2021 13:40 (five years ago)
I took the photo when I was living there in 2007, but this one on Alamy seems to be the same intersection.https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-the-zhuhai-city-streets-taxis-and-buses-in-the-streets-kapok-blooming-54794771.htmlIt is one of the least crowded places I have been to in China.
― ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 January 2021 13:43 (five years ago)
Wikipedia agrees!
According to a report released in 2014 by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Zhuhai is the most livable city in China.
― partyin' maskless with Rudy G. and Vanilla Ice, it's a gas gas gas (breastcrawl), Monday, 4 January 2021 14:05 (five years ago)
My mom used to tell me I was the most livable kid in my grade
― flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 4 January 2021 14:21 (five years ago)
Yeah it often gets these kind of plaudits, for me the best thing about living there was the street barbecues, but the local govt police closed them all down. It's the border town to Macau like Shenzhen is to Hong Kong, so instead of factories you have triads, semi-abandoned wives of international trade guys, seafood restaurants (all the fish is from the Pearl River estuary, leading to v. high levels of thyroid cancer)Still liked living there more than Beijing or Guangzhou though.

black & silver number plates are pretty distinctive

1.5 million people, that's more than Munich or Milan, but it doesn't rank in the top 50 for China.

Somewhat notable for the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau bridge system, which according to wp "is both the longest sea crossing and the longest open-sea fixed link in the world.

they seem to have the black & silver license plates
