the amos scenes in this ep have Cube energy

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 18:40 (three years ago) link

this last episode was a fuckin cracker

inaros really turning into a very enjoyably hatable villain

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 3 January 2021 20:47 (three years ago) link

this is the first time in years I'm eagerly waiting for a new ep of a series to drop - it's so good right now.

calzino, Sunday, 3 January 2021 21:20 (three years ago) link

it really is. however i’ve completely forgotten the basis for amos’ tender connection with “peaches” i.e. melba i.e. julie mao’s sister clarissa. didn’t she frame holden for a previous opa bombing??

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 3 January 2021 22:52 (three years ago) link

whoa was that who that was?! that makes more sense, I thought it was some random new plot element from his criminal past but you are right. I assume he was seeing her for reasons yet unknown.

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Sunday, 3 January 2021 23:12 (three years ago) link

that episode totally fucking ruled, obviously, the shock wave taking out UN1 was A++

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Sunday, 3 January 2021 23:13 (three years ago) link

In the book they transport her back to earth from the ring gate for trial. It’s takes months to cover the distance and at some point they let her out and Amos and her form a bond repairing stuff on the rocinante, which is beat up after the slow zone incident.

Everything is a bit foreshortened in the tv series but the better pacing suits it. The inaros stuff is a bit turgid in the book.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Sunday, 3 January 2021 23:50 (three years ago) link

ah, thanks for context

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Sunday, 3 January 2021 23:52 (three years ago) link

I never know if booksplaining is a good idea or not but this bit sets up probably the best sequence in the books, Amos on earth, and how it’s unfolding so far on screen is really gripping.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Sunday, 3 January 2021 23:56 (three years ago) link

yep, cuz he is fucked now, there ain't gonna be some easy way offplanet

So after trying to wait to get whole season broke down, and that means half way (or more) through season already

as always amos and chrissy (!) were/are joys, apart and def together

think thy've, which has been ongoing, done great job of combining/compressing storylines from books
in re that though, and responding to cpl above comments - maybe wasnt ultra clear but think not just in books but in show they have

1. made clear that the rocinante doesn't just depend on goodwill of fred johnson - the whole point of in (s 3?) transporting the journalists, lead of whom is back in this season but whose name i'm blanking is that that was a pay job - fred just gives them a friends/family discount on repairs not full subsidy for adventures

2. re peaches/clarissa mao- not just a book thing but when they are transporting her back for trial (again s3, end) she is working with amos on ship repairs and it comes up that he intentionally gave her option of committing suicide as opposed to facing life in prison, feeling that wld be a choice he'd want in that position. her belief she deserves to face trial/punishment is when he told her (bad paraphrase/memory) - then take the shit they give you and just grind out your time giving nothing back. a line she repeats to him when he comes to visit her and she realises he's really there.

think for amos who we've seen clings to codes he's gained from others or maybe more tries to live by the codes of others he sees as better, saw a chance to maybe serve as a compass for someone else who is even more lost lost (and love amos having to serve as moral compass for lost person)

but yeah, have been pushing the show on friends for years now and restarted now new season is back - and great

H in Addis, Monday, 4 January 2021 15:06 (three years ago) link

Ah yes, Amos give her a chance to space herself.

calzino, Monday, 4 January 2021 15:13 (three years ago) link

this show is finally properly "GOT (but good) in space" and I love it

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 14:02 (three years ago) link

the Amos standoff / Clarissa attack sequence is good as hell!!

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 14:10 (three years ago) link

killer closing line (straight from the books I'd guess), great delivery from Chatham

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 14:28 (three years ago) link

some more thoughts up to 5.06

The Marco/Naomi scene where they're openly talking in medieval terms (not to mention the mention of "rallying to his banner") had me chuckling in its sheer GOTness. also, I think Marco is a fantastic villain. the guy plays him with just the right mix of petulance, arrogance, and conviction.

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 14:58 (three years ago) link

it occurs to me that Marco’s a lot like a dog chasing a car

mh, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 15:46 (three years ago) link

re Amos & Clarissa -- I think some of the bond between them is the darkness/anger/sociopathy aspect of their personalities that aren't just completely chaotic or mercenary. Like, there's a kindred spirit aspect there, as well as the fascination that they come from opposite social strata.

Also, the polyamorous sex-positive belter pod is in the books. This wasn't an invention of the show to make things sexy on a show that doesn't have as much sex as comparable programs (e.g. Game of Thrones lol)

sarahell, Thursday, 7 January 2021 01:50 (three years ago) link

I hadn't even really paid enough attention to those characters to notice they had a polycule going tbh

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 03:37 (three years ago) link

everyone on Drummer’s ship right now (at least before they met up with Marco)? polycule

mh, Thursday, 7 January 2021 17:19 (three years ago) link

the "Clarissa goes ham on the weirdo" sequence was, I daresay, slightly Lynchian!

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 18:57 (three years ago) link

Showxiating

pretty much called the end of yesterday's episode!

this was intense. did not expect the Last Of Us vibes!

so happy for bobbie and and alex. they deserve it.

absolutely cannot wait for the next episode. too far away!

Dawes is, AFAWK, still alive, right? I wonder if we'll get one last Jared Harris appearance.

holy fuck these last two eps were good

Marco looks like such a high school drama teacher.

DJI, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:44 (three years ago) link

and the silly little han solo stripe down the side of his space trousers!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:45 (three years ago) link

E06 best of this season so far - six separate story threads weaving around and incredibly exciting and well edited rather than overstuffing. Major LOLs at Bobbie's HUD display showing the Belter boarding party as "Low Threat"

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 9 January 2021 08:06 (three years ago) link

I think this is the first time there's been a ton of different plots and none of them are boring

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Saturday, 9 January 2021 14:29 (three years ago) link

yeah nice to see Bobbie in her armor again

everything abt that EP totally ruled, the smug Belter prisoner was done really well because the foreshadowing was just vague enough

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Saturday, 9 January 2021 17:00 (three years ago) link

seems improbable

mookieproof, Thursday, 14 January 2021 05:01 (three years ago) link

She injected herself with pure liquid plot armour.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 14 January 2021 05:54 (three years ago) link

I'm just wondering if injecting yourself in zero g with zero surface pressure would be a good idea. You wouldn't find blood not being contained by the skin or something would you. Like, never seen it done but would be wondering how wise a move it would be.

Stevolende, Thursday, 14 January 2021 10:12 (three years ago) link

idk it was a bit silly but many many silly things happen on this show

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Thursday, 14 January 2021 10:19 (three years ago) link

a sci-fi tv series without preposterousness is like trying to imagine germany without hitler sausages!

calzino, Thursday, 14 January 2021 10:27 (three years ago) link

I think they get the preposterousness/gritty realness balance quite correct in this show

calzino, Thursday, 14 January 2021 10:42 (three years ago) link

Made for a good cliffhanger so I’ll take the hokum.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Thursday, 14 January 2021 11:00 (three years ago) link

if you're not a regular on the Roci are you even real

more on 5.07:

As hokey as the space jump itself was, I was glad it meant the end of Naomi on Marco's ship - I already felt like that story was threatening to run in circles. This was maybe the only episode of the season where it felt like a lot of the plots were just kind of proceeding apace rather than reaching some kind of important new juncture. That said, ice fucking cold ending for Brent Sexton's character. Also, I thought the little glimpses of younger Naomi and baby Filip were tastefully handled.

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Thursday, 14 January 2021 12:30 (three years ago) link

Was going to say--Naomi's dive was unlikely but not preposterous, especially with whatever stimulanty thing was in the needle (can't remember what it was in the books). The main thing that bothered me was her touching the outside of the ship with bare skin because that metal would be close to -273 degrees C.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 15 January 2021 00:48 (three years ago) link

I don't even care for the fictional credulity ... that it was a powerfully dramatic (daft) moment that left me eagerly waiting for the next instalment is good enough for me.

calzino, Friday, 15 January 2021 00:57 (three years ago) link

yup

it was oxygenated blood, same thing they gave to....journalist lady

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Friday, 15 January 2021 03:13 (three years ago) link

the first 30 minutes of this dragged, could have used some editing imo (i.e. Simon otm)

then it got good again

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Friday, 15 January 2021 15:53 (three years ago) link

The whole family-reunion plotline mostly sucked IMO. I hate Marco, but not in the way the writers want me to.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 15 January 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

haha so true

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Friday, 15 January 2021 16:15 (three years ago) link

i didn't like it, but it could have been much worse imo

mookieproof, Friday, 15 January 2021 16:17 (three years ago) link

The whole family-reunion plotline mostly sucked IMO. I hate Marco, but not in the way the writers want me to.

I like him in actual command mode (like when he gave his big address to the system), but we definitely got too many scenes of him being petty and small - it kinda overshadowed the menace.

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Friday, 15 January 2021 16:22 (three years ago) link

Just imagining him stamping his feet and yelling "regional theater IS real theater!"
