It's the most literal interpretation - he likes to dream he's a viking. If you have to think too much about what a line is referring to, it's almost always the most likely interpretation that's right

And upon further review you still thought that interpretation makes the most sense, that a writer would expect an audience to come up with that interpretation, and all the other writers and show runners would sign off on it.

Like this entire discussion wasn't some instant, personal reaction. You were presented with a much more sensible, likely interpretation and still persisted with a different one.

the appeals to authorial authority on this thread have always been so strange to me. like, i thought the author was dead. also: has anyone here ever actually logicked someone out of thinking a joke was funny, and into thinking it was funny in some different way that they prefer?

I was able to convince my son that when I dropped my phone in the toilet it was funny as a satire on technological addiction rather than being funny because the phone was poopy

1) a big point y'all seem unable to consider is viewing it from a writer's/joke creator's POV
2) nobody is doing that. We're simply saying your interpretation is incorrect, that it wasn't how the joke was intended.

Telling someone theyre clearly wrong about a trifle should be ok on a message board

Let’s go with the interpretation that doesn’t require creating a completely new and pointless connotation for a word, because if we assume the standard connotation, as one would expect the audience to do as a matter of course, the joke fits perfectly with the character’s stream-of-consciousness absurdity, and makes for a good laugh at face value.

The "excels at sleep" people are basically the racist trump-voting relatives of not understanding comedy, they know what they're saying is wrong and that's what they enjoy about it

I've always been on Team Dream here, but have to say that Ralph Wiggum coming up with a bizarre malapropism is vmic.

xp also is Ralph known for using obscure language or hidden meanings? I feel like it’s a cornerstone of his character that he’ll just blurt out whatever and you can take what he says literally.

And is Ralph even self-aware enough to know that he’s not good at things when he’s awake?

He dreams that he’s a Viking- which gives us a great visual to imagine! Which is not the case if he means he’s good at things- where is the humor there?

I don't know if it is vmic, but this era of The Simpsons has tons of out-of-character moments. Characters don't stick rigidly to their expected patterns.

would really love to know what i or others said to give you this impression because it's not correct fyi! it's funny tho, as an "exceller," i've always been able to understand and accept that the "dreamers" hear the joke a different way and think it's funny! i ask only that the same courtesy be extended in our direction.

Missed this whole debate but I somehow do remember the joke and I always took it to mean “excels at sleep”; the other interpretation never occurred to me. I could explain why I take it that way but I’m sure all possible points have been covered in the 2000 or so previous posts. Would only say that my interpretation is not necessarily more metaphorical than the other. Dreaming is in itself metaphorical.
