Heh as if the majority of people in San Francisco city limits at any given time have any need to think about the majestic beige home to the Sun Valley Mall that is Concord, let alone pronounce the name of said shining beacon of the suburban dream

I mean, Concord is hardly the bastion of culture and classy consumer goods that is Walnut Creek -- sometimes I aspire to live in Walnut Creek

Negativland's home was in El Cerrito for a while -- I went to El Cerrito last night.

Metallica had a house in El Cerrito, and a nondescript one at that.

When Don Joyce died I helped Internet Archive empty out his storage space and got some free swag for it. That was either in EC or Richmond, I think. It was a trip to see all the random NL stuff they had stored away in a section of a huge nondescript warehouse.

El Cerrito rules. Fogerty's from there. The Mel-O-Dee is the best karaoke spot I've been to. A hop, skip and a jump from Albany Bowl, the Hotsy Totsy and the amazing taco truck that was always parked outside.

Albany Bowl just closed for good this week :(

I miss the Mel-o-Dee, haven't been there in a couple years.

Probably not the thread or board to ask if anyone watched the verzuz on Friday but that was so great.

We caught a fair bit of it. My Twitter feed was amazing.

I think Mod Lang Records moved to El Cerrito from Berkeley... that place is near and dear to me from the 90's

El Cerrito is the other Alameda -- as in hipster retirement community

Alameda is more of a psychobilly retirement community.

Alameda is shockingly racist.

I won't argue with that... there was a big opposition to the In'n'Out burger being built, with plenty of pearl-clutching about "Oakland-type people" coming over to dine there.

Jim Morrison went to high school in Alameda.

I have a bunch of relatives that live there

One of my very dear friends has been living there in a house his grandfather built with his two hands, but he's leaving for a Fulbright and probably never returning to the US, sadly.

Deliciously ironic considering the SF Republican party held their victory party in the Twitter bldg on election night 2016.

Pretty sure the building will be empty!

Twitter HQ will be but that supermarket's probably open.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sophisticated hackers, identity thieves and overseas criminal rings stole over $11 billion in unemployment benefits from California last year, but the extent of the fraud might grow far larger: billions more in payments are under investigation.

California Labor Secretary Julie Su told reporters in a conference call Monday that of the $114 billion the state paid in unemployment claims, about 10% have been confirmed as fraudulent, or $11.4 billion.

I feel like the EDD (Employment Development Dept, who oversees unemployment benefits) were A) hugely understaffed; B) using computer technology from the early 1970s; and C) under a great deal of pressure to expedite payments as quickly as possible due to the covid-related unemployment. It's a perfect storm for those willing and able to exploit their multitude of weaknesses.

What really sucks is the people who find themselves legitimately applying for benefits for the first time, only to be told that their benefits have been exhausted by some felon who stole their identity months ago. That's a tough one to prove.

Anyway stay safe out there -- the city looks like it won't be as bad but a lot of the surrounding areas, yipes.
