It's not quite as comforting as all that. Yes, if the Republicans choose to make a naked power grab by overthrowing the election based solely on the raw manipulation of technicalities, there are countervailing technicalities available to block them. To my mind, if it ever came to both sides grappling for the presidency through such arcane and undemocratic means, the result would be instant chaos in the streets to the point where a declaration of martial law would be a certainty and a civil war more likely than not.

I'm never really sure what a civil war here would look like. It's not like the Democratic states have standing armies ... and unfortunately antifa isn't actually going to mount a guerrilla campaign.

I have personally been "in the streets" for anti-Gulf War I, anti-GATT, anti-WTO, anti NAFTA, anti-G.W. Bush, anti- Gulf War II, anti-gun, anti-Trump, and pro-BLM stuff.

For most of these, I am skeptical about how much the needle was moved by there being people "in the streets." There are numerous times George W. Bush could have easily looked out a window and seen me (and my fellow travelers) "in the streets," and then shrugged and gone back to whatever he was doing.

I don't mind being "in the streets," and I'm sure I'll be there again. But can we please get some power in places where power is actually exercised? I am thinking of congressional majorities and the presidency and, to the extent possible, the judiciary. Thxbye

Re: Sharlet, I guess that I just think there are plenty of other people who know about Christian extremism movements in the US, but Sharlet is often the go-to guy, and that's *weird* when you're talking about movements that rely on messianic figures of infinite wisdom.
