starting to wonder if any candidate will ever get 400 EVs ever again.

One of those cases where they fought the last war and it actually was the right war.

At the rate we're going, maybe whoever wins in 2024.

It must be true

Powell now telling Newsmax that Bernie Sanders actually won the Democratic primary in 2016 but the machines were rigged to give Hillary Clinton the win, says Sanders knows but he was paid off to keep quiet.

I just can't wrap my head around people like her. Like, is she for real? Or is she playing some sort of Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer role?

she was in Encino Man iirc

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 22 November 2020 04:19 (five years ago)

Powell sure seems to be a grade-A lunatic. I mean, even if based on no other evidence than the fact that she eagerly hopped on a train that was in the process of careening off a cliff.

You will notice a small sink where your sofa once was. (Old Lunch), Sunday, 22 November 2020 04:27 (five years ago)

not just someone hopping on a train

Dan S, Sunday, 22 November 2020 04:35 (five years ago)

AFAIK she was pretty well regarded prior to this no? She def sounds like someone who's developed some serious mental issues. Or Trump gives his lawyer du jour some cuckoo juice.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 22 November 2020 04:42 (five years ago)

I think this is is just on the theory that anything you can say that gets ANYONE on board with the destabilizing message is useful. She thinks there are Sanders dead-enders out there who are going to join forces with her because "good point the establishment DOES hack the machines" but she is wrong.

Yeah for one thing his voters overwhelmingly support overturning an election to keep him in power forever in a way that’s not really comparable to anything before. I mean that’s just one thing. I almost forgot they’re also actively against doing anything to stop the pandemic. I get not wanting people to

One thing that’s obvious yet still insane to consider is that Trump is doing all this to keep a job HE DOESNT EVEN WANT TO DO. It would be one thing if he’d spent his term working his ass off to accomplish certain things, even if they were bad things. But he has never demonstrated the slightest bit of genuine interest in doing the job of President. He literally just wants to BE President, that’s all.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Sunday, 22 November 2020 08:48 (five years ago)

He's doing all this to BE President. (And to dodge prosecution.)

onlyfans.com/hunterb (milo z), Sunday, 22 November 2020 08:55 (five years ago)

He is going to be called President Trump until he dies anyway isn't he? It's part of your title once you've served the role isn't it?
I remember asking if there was any chance he could be stripped of the privilege once he was out of office.

Even bigger swathes of the right-wing commentariat/think tank world are now going "Look just give it up." Even Byron York's had it, not to mention Brit Hume. Meanwhile SCOTUSblog is just laughing at the cult:

Dear @realdonaldtrump supporters: SCOTUS is not getting involved. We wish it would. What a case! But unfortunately, that is a fever dream of gaslighting, insular, pro-Trump media that collects your attention, energy & money by deceiving you into seeing hope where none exists.

From a ways back

It's funny, now that I think of it, there are any number of prominent conservatives that play or played in rock bands. Sekulow, Huckabee, Joe Scarborough. Lee Atwater. Any Dem musical hobbyists?

How soon we forget Martin O'Malley!

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Miami-Dade "Brooks Brothers Revolt." It a crazy moment, at a crazy time, one I'm still so proud to have been a part of. But what we were protesting for is a far cry from the Trump machinations and bizarre press conference we're seeing.

xps: Barron loses his SS detail March 20, 2022.

However, Melania will have SS details for another 30+ years. In the 90s, I met a SS agent who was taking correspondence law courses while protecting Lady Bird Johnson at the LBJ ranch.

It must really be something for Republicans and Fox News to realize with chilling clarity that they have been so successful at radicalizing their base that their base is now moving beyond them in a desperate search of further radicalization.

If you are both nervous and a nerd, here is a long (too long) but possibly heartening video about how no, there is no way for Trump to win via electoral shenanigans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6sVow9l8H4

There are multiple layers of failsafe. For example, one of the more inventive ones is as follows: If there is an objection during the swearing in of the new Congress, the Speaker can refuse to seat Republican congress people - ironically, due to the "allegations of massive election fraud" that we've heard so much about. The Speaker could then proceed with a fully Democratic House.

If a state presents competing sets of electors, the House can lodge an objection and simply refuse to act. If no resolution to an objection is reached, on Inauguration Day the Speaker becomes acting president. Biden (although he is not a member of the House) could even be chosen as Speaker in this scenario.

We won't get to any of those truly bizarre scenarios, though, and we don't have to. More and more states will be certifying starting tomorrow, and the train will be moving with too much momentum to halt. (One hopes.)

coupvfefe (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 22 November 2020 20:06 (five years ago)

Not trying to be an ass, JiC, but I could go the rest of my life without reading or hearing from Sharlet. There's something deeply unnerving about him and the way so many media outlets go directly to him to explain any instance of Christian religious fundamentalism.

there is no way for Trump to win via electoral shenanigans

It's not quite as comforting as all that. Yes, if the Republicans choose to make a naked power grab by overthrowing the election based solely on the raw manipulation of technicalities, there are countervailing technicalities available to block them. To my mind, if it ever came to both sides grappling for the presidency through such arcane and undemocratic means, the result would be instant chaos in the streets to the point where a declaration of martial law would be a certainty and a civil war more likely than not.

The Solace of Fortitude (Aimless), Sunday, 22 November 2020 20:20 (five years ago)

I'm never really sure what a civil war here would look like. It's not like the Democratic states have standing armies ... and unfortunately antifa isn't actually going to mount a guerrilla campaign.

The ruling Team Trump wants to appeal helpfully shows that the Third Circuit—to which they are appealing—rejected the very arguments at the heart of their "Frankenstein's Monster" theory.

Such legal skill

They want to get to the Supreme Court. They apparently aren't aware that when you get to the Supreme Court appealing a 12(b)(6), the best thing you get is a remand to the district court to litigate the rest of the case.
