BTW the right-wing "it's 6D chess" line is that they always intended to lose these initial cases, and lose them quickly; the objective is to lose in lower courts so that you can appeal to higher ones, presumably ending with the Trumpian Supreme Court.

Narrator: that's not how this works; that's not how any of this works

coupvfefe (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:13 (five years ago)

"losing = winning" is a remarkably consistent philosophy for them

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:15 (five years ago)

It's kind of funny how "Throw out all Joe Biden's ballots" isn't quite the winning legal strategy they envisioned.

Rudy Giuliani is among the worst people alive afaic.

I've read that at this point, it's solely about putting an asterisk next to Biden's name... like, they know they likely won't win but they just wanna sow doubt about the legitimacy of the new administration.
Not sure I believe that 100%, these guys are pretty delusional.

lmao at the number of people angry that Harris didn’t set fire to Lindsey Graham on the Senate floor

Like, have any of them ever had a job before? Or even interacted with more than one human being who wasn’t obligated by blood to love them?

DJP, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:41 (five years ago)

there might be an asterisk next to Biden's name but only in the heads of a minority of Trump acolytes, plus, the presence of said asterisk in people's minds (like with Bush 2's first term) means precisely nothing.

akm, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:42 (five years ago)

Honestly? I do believe that 100%. Like, that is all this is.

The MAGA heads will go to their graves with "of course, that election was stolen by Dominion, and corrupt Democrat judges helped them steal it, and then Roberts STABBED US IN THE BACK by not taking up the case."

Ad infinitum forever.

They don't even really want the win at this point, they just want the righteous victim/Lost Cause points when they lose.

I totally agree with this read, and the sad fact is, it'll work.

I interviewed at Bracewell when it was Bracewell & Giuliani. I saw him - surprisingly small. Even just from my junior interviewer I got the vibe that he didn't actually do anything, she kind of tactfully hinted at that.

Saw my first “Trump Is MY President” flag while out on a walk in the ‘hood today. An outlier, because this is a very liberal area. I wonder how long those flags will hang on. Trump is obviously counting on there being a deep and lasting well of passion for him, but I don’t know.

eephus otm, for certain values of "work."

And yeah, once Bush was in office, it mattered exactly not at all when people said he was "selected, not elected."

How long did "Obama is my president"/"Hillary is my president" last? Maybe it will just be your own personal president from here on out.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:50 (five years ago)

I heard no one say "Hillary is my president" after, say, the Women's March in 2017.

akm, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:52 (five years ago)

I heard Jon Stewart call McCain 'my president' several years after he lost the primary to bush though.

akm, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:53 (five years ago)

LOOOOOOL

No results found for "mondale is my president"

In the future everybody will be president for 15 people.

Would be cool if we could have occasional guest star presidents. Alas, Charo wasn't born in the U.S.

Update from U.S. district court in Williamsport, Pa., one of the Trump campaign's last stands:

GIULIANI: “I’m not sure what 'opacity' means. It probably means you can see.”

JUDGE BRANN: “It means you can’t.”

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 23:09 (five years ago)

...Rudy has no idea what the judge is talking about. He thinks the judge is asking about the standard for deciding a motion to dismiss. After blundering around he eventually sort of eventually kind of understands partially, I think, but does not answer incoherently.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 23:14 (five years ago)

Rudy, at one point, accidentally suggests a FAR MORE LENIENT TEST FAVORING THE STATE because he doesn't understand what's going on. The judge, who is honest, corrects him and gently redirects him to the general vicinity of what he should be talking about.

“If I conclude that rational basis applies, why don’t they satisfy that standard?”

Rudy: “how is this rational?”

That isn’t the answer Rudy.

xps Can't Shelton's nomination be put forward again once Grassley and Rick Scott return from quarantine? Then McConnell could change his vote back to yes and it would be 50-50 with Pence as tiebreaker. Or is there not enough time?

Dan S, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 23:19 (five years ago)

Sorry last one

Rudy: how is it "RATIONAL" to have different standards?

Jesus this is like a bad Death Wish remake where a feeble old man is getting beaten up by hoodlums

Xxxpost Doesn't this suggest that the certifying is going to happen regardless?

A county board that fails to canvass within 14 days after the election must give all of its documentation to the Secretary of State's office and Board of State Canvassers, which then has 10 days to complete the work and canvass and certify the results, according to the board’s canvassing manual.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 23:28 (five years ago)

Thanks Neanderthal, was just trying to find out more about what happens next with that.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 23:29 (five years ago)

Yeah from the articles I read, it's another punt. A temporary "win" that really does nothing but delay inevitable.

Also WI finished their canvass without issue...woohoo!

there were another 2755 votes found to be not uploaded in Fayette County GA that shifted the vote slightly in Trump's direction, but Biden is still winning by ~13,000, and most of the recount has been completed now
