Yeah honestly I remember them always pushing back hard when someone starts to lie or mislead.

Despite the recent allegations of #Bothsidesism, I think it's generally regarded as pretty left-leaning.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:03 (five years ago)

I guess I would say that when TAL takes on a serious/news subject, they tell interesting stories about it but I would be very wary of listening to a TAL episode about something and then believing that you understand it or know the deal with it as a result.

NPR drives me crazy for all the reasons mentioned above, but on road trips through the deepest blood-red parts of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, I'm glad to be able to find its smug centrism on the radio ... needless to say, most listeners in those parts of the world regard it as socialist propaganda funded by the deep state with stolen tax dollars

― Brad C.

otm

i have now matured into my "NPR _actually_ sucks" phase of my life. but growing up, NPR was like a far-left bastion of news, literally the only reasonable thing on the radio, surrounded by nothing but christian radio, right-wing radio, christian right-wing radio, AND THE POINT: ONE OH FIVE POINT SEVEN ALTERNATIVE RADIO

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:03 (five years ago)

in those areas, NPR might be the only station on the dial that is acknowledging that trump lost

i'm not even joking

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

drive through the middle of illinois

it fucking blows and everyone is an uninformed moron

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

then you cross over into missouri and it's the same except it smells worse and everyone's even more racist

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

i can say that because i hate missouri

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:06 (five years ago)

(Nevermind, that was Kansas)

Many x-posts, but fine with no more pointing to my sign, and apologies for kerfuffle.

Also, I stopped listening to NPR around right after the election in 2016. I had a 40 minute commute through farmland, mostly, and I actually punched the radio so hard at one point that I broke skin on my hand and couldn't use my index finger for a while. Why? Because they were interviewing people who had voted for Trump in West Virginia, and there was just...no pushback. The profiled people were like, "my daddy and my daddy's daddy and his daddy's daddy were coal miners and now I have three kids and am addicted to heroin and it's Barack Obama's fault" and I just lost my fucking mind.

Come on, them and *literally everyone else.*

My cousin-in-law and Burroughs shared a dentist in Kansas.

Omaha is great - surprisingly hilly and pretty - and the people in Nebraska are super nice. Worst food in the country, though. I have a foodie friend who goes there every year for the Warren Buffett thing, and he told me hasn't even managed to have a good steak in Omaha. It's the sort of place where pizza is still considered ethnic cuisine. There was a place I've been to a couple of times that used to sell deep friend parsley. Parsely. That's what you fry when you want the bare minimum cheapest base to hold the batter together.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:32 (five years ago)

Yes- maybe they have stepped up their game a little since I was a regular listener, but certainly in the 2016-2018 timeframe it was frequently maddening to me that they seemed to err on the side of presenting conservative viewpoints and not pushing back on talking points.

epistantophus, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:32 (five years ago)

There's always been a cool underground music scene in Omaha, I know some cool folks from there

The thing that makes NPR insufferable for me is all the stories with about 5 minutes of content that they pad out to 5 minutes or 30 or 60 minutes by (1) showing the search for the story or even worse having the journalist/storyteller be the protagonist in the story, and (2) repeatedly telling you how they are jizzing themselves over how mind blowing the story is and when you hear the story you, too, will be jizzing over this mind blowing story.

xps- Trump did go after NPR. Didn’t he threaten to pull their federal funding?

epistantophus, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:34 (five years ago)

David Nance Group is def one of the best rock bands in the world right now and they are from Nebraska

I think Saddle Creek's presence, Bright Eyes, the Faint, Cursive, Mike Mogis' studio made a pretty lasting effect there in terms of some good infrastructure and influencing a younger generation

but you know according to karl it's just a giant pile of cow shit eating subliterate morons not like the precious blue states

Trump did go after NPR. Didn’t he threaten to pull their federal funding?

I believe he did, but federal grants are only about 2% of the NPR budget

Brad C., Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:43 (five years ago)

xps Don't forget The Execution of All Things! That album alone, I can't confirm it but suspect had a major impact

Nhex, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:44 (five years ago)

Blue states are divided between people who live in the cities and people who eat cowshit

(come on, I’m exaggerating. My best friends are from the same rural areas I’m shittalking)

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:50 (five years ago)

Apropos of nothing in particular, I'm predicting DeJoy is going to agree to resign as PG early and testify against Trump in return for immunity. I'm terrible at predictions, but I'll go out on a limb with that one. It's a daydream I've been having.

scampo-phenique (WmC), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:53 (five years ago)

That would be awesome

Amy #Kony Barrett (map), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:59 (five years ago)

Has DeJoy actually committed anything that can be charged as a crime? I was under the impression that everything he did was technically legal, as "cost-cutting"

Nhex, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 19:00 (five years ago)

Well, he ignored a direct court order, for one.

Re: Nebraska, fwiw the split electoral college vote gained by Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District would have gotten Biden the White House by one had there been a tie.

Thread on the Rudy follies

Judge says "It's my preference that one attorney presents the argument for all defendants and then IF IT IS NECESSARY other defendants can make individual arguments," or words to that effect.

That . . . is not a good start for plaintiff.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, who has helped oversee a string of failed court challenges to President Trump’s defeat in the election, asked the president’s campaign to pay him $20,000 a day for his legal work, multiple people briefed on the matter said.

The request stirred opposition from some of Mr. Trump’s aides and advisers, who appear to have ruled out paying that much, and it is unclear how much Mr. Giuliani will ultimately be compensated.

Since Mr. Giuliani took over management of the legal effort, Mr. Trump has suffered a series of defeats in court and lawyers handling some of the remaining cases have dropped out.

A $20,000-a-day rate would have made Mr. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who has been Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer for several years, among the most highly compensated attorneys anywhere.

About the $20,000 a day for Rudy: Totally worth it, IMO.

I will help the Trump campaign pay Rudy's fee on one condition: so long as he is the _only_ attorney working on these lawsuits.

Rudy is asking for the cancellation of hundreds of thousands of votes moments after talking about the importance of the right to vote.

This feels like a moment:

The Judge says he intentionally did not allow Pennsylvania counsel to withdraw because he has "some questions."
