GET OUT: US politics November 2020

It's been months since I heard anyone close to a conservative nut spouting complete nonsense on NPR (unless you count David Brooks?), and whenever that was they literally stopped them multiple times to point out and correct their lies. Now, I guess you could argue that those people should never be on NPR at all, ever, and that's true, but if the entire US government is packed with insane partisans, what are you going to do, literally ignore the entire administration for 4 years and just pretend they don't exist? Even we can't do that, and it's not even our job to pay attention.

Who listens to This American Life in the year of our lord 2020 that is some 00s flashback.

Ok I know Ira Glass and the stereotypical NPR tone are universally derided, but TAL did make an effort at some point to switch their game up, and it's not as twee and banal as it was in the '90s/'00s. They've had some episodes that are actually really worthwhile & legit journalism.

I like NPR. I'm kind of surprised that Trump & Co. have never gone after them, but he may not even know it exists.

TAL does interesting journalism maybe 1/10 episodes, although even there I sometimes feel like they use narrative in a manipulative way.

Yeah honestly I remember them always pushing back hard when someone starts to lie or mislead.

Despite the recent allegations of #Bothsidesism, I think it's generally regarded as pretty left-leaning.

I guess I would say that when TAL takes on a serious/news subject, they tell interesting stories about it but I would be very wary of listening to a TAL episode about something and then believing that you understand it or know the deal with it as a result.

NPR drives me crazy for all the reasons mentioned above, but on road trips through the deepest blood-red parts of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, I'm glad to be able to find its smug centrism on the radio ... needless to say, most listeners in those parts of the world regard it as socialist propaganda funded by the deep state with stolen tax dollars

i have now matured into my "NPR _actually_ sucks" phase of my life. but growing up, NPR was like a far-left bastion of news, literally the only reasonable thing on the radio, surrounded by nothing but christian radio, right-wing radio, christian right-wing radio, AND THE POINT: ONE OH FIVE POINT SEVEN ALTERNATIVE RADIO

Also, I stopped listening to NPR around right after the election in 2016. I had a 40 minute commute through farmland, mostly, and I actually punched the radio so hard at one point that I broke skin on my hand and couldn't use my index finger for a while. Why? Because they were interviewing people who had voted for Trump in West Virginia, and there was just...no pushback. The profiled people were like, "my daddy and my daddy's daddy and his daddy's daddy were coal miners and now I have three kids and am addicted to heroin and it's Barack Obama's fault" and I just lost my fucking mind.

Omaha is great - surprisingly hilly and pretty - and the people in Nebraska are super nice. Worst food in the country, though. I have a foodie friend who goes there every year for the Warren Buffett thing, and he told me hasn't even managed to have a good steak in Omaha. It's the sort of place where pizza is still considered ethnic cuisine. There was a place I've been to a couple of times that used to sell deep friend parsley. Parsely. That's what you fry when you want the bare minimum cheapest base to hold the batter together.

Yes- maybe they have stepped up their game a little since I was a regular listener, but certainly in the 2016-2018 timeframe it was frequently maddening to me that they seemed to err on the side of presenting conservative viewpoints and not pushing back on talking points.

The thing that makes NPR insufferable for me is all the stories with about 5 minutes of content that they pad out to 5 minutes or 30 or 60 minutes by (1) showing the search for the story or even worse having the journalist/storyteller be the protagonist in the story, and (2) repeatedly telling you how they are jizzing themselves over how mind blowing the story is and when you hear the story you, too, will be jizzing over this mind blowing story.

I think Saddle Creek's presence, Bright Eyes, the Faint, Cursive, Mike Mogis' studio made a pretty lasting effect there in terms of some good infrastructure and influencing a younger generation
