B-b-but what does the Baby Jehoshaphat care about math?

An Andalusian Do-rag (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:11 (five years ago)

Reading the WaPo this morning, it seems like a very real possibility that the driving force behind all his firings and reappointments in recent days is strictly to find a back door way to declassify intelligence he's convinced exonerates him in the Russia affair. Which of course is a big waste of time, so yeah, probably accurate.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:12 (five years ago)

Our latest YouGov/The Economist poll has a host of troubling findings about public confidence in the election.

Most shocking is that 86% of Trump voters say that Biden "did not legitimately win the election." 73% say that we'll "never know the real outcome of this election."

On the other hand, of total voters, just 3% said Trump won and 13% that it was yet to be decided:

Looking at the long term, it's not impossible that this echo chamber of stupidity winds up depressing GOP turnout in future elections such that they never again control anything at the federal level.

I DIDN'T SCAN EVERY SINGLE BALLOT MYSELF SO WHY SHOULD I BELIEVE THE ELECTION WAS LEGIT, HUH???

pomenitul, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:27 (five years ago)

so glad Biden's platform is all about compromising with these idiots

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:27 (five years ago)

it's not a non-issue that somewhere between 50 and 100 million citizens think the election was not legit

I don't think that's conparable to 2008 or 2012, and can't begin to understand the impulse to disnmiss it

Equally important question: what do THEY do about it? I mean, aside from whatever pockets of unrest and (god help us) violence they stir up, what is their plan beyond bitching about fraud? What can they do?

It is, in a sense, like 2008, and I'm not gonna weep over the ignorance of 48 million nimrods and racist assholes again.

I thought the last time an election was thought to be falsely decided it was confirmed that the misplaced winner had had support from an enemy of the state but little was done about it

Stevolende, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:34 (five years ago)

"but someone who lives there might think "the left to philly: drop dead."

everyone I know in Philly thinks this shit is hilarious. Granted they all work for WHYY.

akm, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:36 (five years ago)

it's not a non-issue that somewhere between 50 and 100 million citizens think the election was not legit

That's exactly what it is - a non-issue. More people than that believe in angels. (Seriously, though, as Old Lunch said, what can they do with their unbelief? Not vote next time? Who gives a shit? And even if they do vote, it's just been demonstrated that they're significantly outnumbered, even in some of their supposedly strongest enclaves. So fuuuuuck them.)

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:37 (five years ago)

what do THEY do about it?

xp They encourage intransigience in their leaders. It's a circular, self-exacerbating problem that impedes government

it's why the secretary of state is joking about a smooth transition to a second Trump term. I really don't get this weird insistence that just because they won't get their way none of this matters. A huge part of a democracy's health is public confidence.

It's not good ≠ "THE SKY IS FALLING!"

I really don't get this weird insistence that just because they won't get their way none of this matters.

I'll make it really simple for you: politics is about naked power now. The best thing the Democrats can do is say in one voice, "You lost - fuck off. Try again in four years if you want."

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:38 (five years ago)

actually I thought last time somebody was thought to have had help from an enemy of the State to gain the position in leadership they gained by that process, he spent most of his incumbency demonstrating his support for that enemy of teh state. & now he won't go away

Stevolende, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:39 (five years ago)

I just txted one person I know in Philly and she said: "I went to get my hair cut today. The woman who cuts my hair is from this area of Philly. She said when she first saw Giuliani here she thought he was caught buying porn"

akm, Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:39 (five years ago)

While I understand the sentiment, I really wish everyone who's panicking would just sit and game out the potential scenarios with all the facts laid out in front of them. Like even just worst case scenario, is there an organized right-wing resistance massive enough to take on the US military once Biden becomes commander-in-chief in January?

Careful, I got some pushback a few days ago for implying that all Trump voters are racist. I guess I should have added that they are either racist, or comfortable enough with his racism to not make a meaningful difference.

The pollyanna brigades really out on patrol this morning, apologies for not reacting appropriately to a poll that says 86% of one party in a two-party system think the president is illegitimate.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

Hadrian, I don't think you'll get any argument here that republicans not accepting the results of an election is Not Good. The erosion of norms and confidence in democracy is a bad thing. But it's also been a thing among that lot for a while. And ultimately, wrt the completed election and the transfer of power that will be taking place in two months, their lack of acceptance is effectively meaningless.

Some dads are not YOUR dad (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

I think it's more that we were all baffled by the exit polls according to which Trump had made significant gains among non-white voters.

It's your right to respond this way. Add four points and we've got 90+ percent of Republicans supporting Trump generally: an unheard-of figure. But this 86 percent ain't keeping Joe Biden from stepping into the Oval Office in January.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:45 (five years ago)

― pomenitul,

What happened in Miami-Dade County shattered me a week ago, but two things can be true: Trump made gains with non-white voters, but Biden, even with the percentages in MDC and South Texas, made more, without whom he would not be leading in Arizona and Georgia.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 November 2020 15:47 (five years ago)

Eric posted a Tweet, and my response was "ugh." How these things get scanned as anything other than, yes, "The erosion of norms and confidence in democracy is a bad thing" is very confusing to me.

my concern with nimrod denial of the election's legitimacy is simply that it further augments GOP legislators' tendency to obstruct at every step.

I heqard a lot of peoplke over the last 4 years thinking that the GOP was shrinking under trump because of hsi lack of outreach and attempt to get new people involved. Is that still a thought? was wondering what the 5age of people thinking the forthcoiming President was illegitimate was a %age of .

I mean everybody's know for 4 years that there like genuinely wasa toally illegitimate eejit in the whitehouse, calling him a bastard might be a little over polite really.
