Whitman orchestrated one of the greatest political defeats in CA history... her own defeat.

Was momentarily PTSD'd by this map tbh:

David Marchick, who directs the nonpartisan Center for Presidential Transition, said there are important real-world implications for a delayed transition. Marchick points to the delay in the transition to the George W. Bush administration after the Supreme Court ruling.

"That slowed the process of the Bush administration getting their national security team in place. Eight months later, we had 9/11," Marchick said. "When the 9/11 Commission did their autopsy on what went wrong, one of the things they pointed to was the slow pace of the Bush administration getting their national security team in place. And they said it impaired our ability to react."

um lol at trying to blame 9/11 on *that*

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 17:56 (five years ago)

Trump did 9/11

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:00 (five years ago)

well of course it made his buildings the tallest in town or not.
But slightly suspicious taht was his take away from the event innit

Stevolende, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:01 (five years ago)

xpost wouldn't mind that catching on

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:03 (five years ago)

let's look into the "irregularities" in the 9/11 Commission Investigation, see if they "missed something"

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:03 (five years ago)

tbf, Trump's dragging his heels on allowing access and monetary support for Biden's transition staff shouldn't have much effect if it only lasts another week or so, but the longer it continues, the harder a smooth handoff of power becomes. there are thousands upon thousands of details involved in running the federal bureaucracy and the works have gotten so gummed up under Trump that god knows what Biden's people will find when they arrive.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:06 (five years ago)

Well, it was an amazing phone call, I mean, 40 Wall Street actually was the second tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually before the World Trade Center the tallest, and then when they built the World Trade Center it became known as the second tallest, and now it's the tallest.

— Donald J. Trump, 9/11 sponsor

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:08 (five years ago)

It's possible that Trump has ruined all the toilets in the WH and is slightly embarrassed.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:09 (five years ago)

Asked what recourse the Biden team has at this point, the official said: "At this point there's a number of levers on the table, and all options are certainly available. It's a changing situation and certainly rather fluid. But we do have a number of options on the table that we can, we can pursue.”

Pressed if that included legal actions, the official said: "Legal action is certainly a possibility. But there are other options as well that we are considering."

anybody have an idea what kind of legal recourse could actually compel GSA to act?

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:10 (five years ago)

xp inappropriately, that's certainly to #1 and never to #2

Meg Whitman in charge of ICE would actually be kind of hilarious because her strategy would be to fire 10% of the available agents every year

well, one thing the democratic party is good at is leaving many options on the table that they could pursue

I'm like, legitimately curious. i can't see a mechanism taht could compel GSA to make an ascertainment since (once again) the legal definition of ascertainment is vague and unclear in regards to their role. but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:23 (five years ago)

OK, breathing a little bit faster again ...

Pompeo just now: “There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration."

Yeahhh, I'm finding it especially concerning that the line has moved from "We need to count all the votes and investigate irregularities" to "Trump definitely won."

trolling. i mean he knows he's out of a job anyway otherwise.

I don't know who I'd rather watch choke to death on a salmon bone, Barr or Pompeo.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:31 (five years ago)

I mean all of you on #teamnoworries are going to let us know when this officially crosses a line where we can legit be concerned, right? I mean, this all feels pretty bad, but I keep being promised this is all meaningless, demonstrative theater...

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:31 (five years ago)

Trolling or not, it's still immensely fucked up that it's come to this. The precedent has been set, and enough morons are on board with it to make it viable in the long term.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:31 (five years ago)

I mean I don't think many of us know, we haven't been here before. but I"m basing my thought process on the fact that merely saying something is fact doesn't legally make it so, and it isn't as if the Biden team is gonna go "oh welp we gave it a shot and we technically won but I guess we're not gonna get into the White House, darn it"

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

And it further normalizes this shit for next time, so people will be numb to it in future elections, thus enabling the line to be pushed ever further.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

I mean, you're not wrong about any of that.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:34 (five years ago)

i think SCOTUS's indication that it likely won't dismantle the ACA does illustrate that it doesn't merely do Trump's bidding.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:35 (five years ago)

As with birther bullshit, the goal is to make Biden's presidency seem illegitimate from the get-go. I can't imagine giving bipartisanship the least bit of credence under such conditions.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:35 (five years ago)

this is why I wanted Trump to die of COVID btw

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:38 (five years ago)

Yeah, again, I don't think the results are going to change, but it's the smaller, more incremental, long term damage this bullshit is doing to the overall health or our already weakened democracy.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:38 (five years ago)

from all I've seen, Trump's SCOTUS picks are not Trump cronies, they're just you're standard issue FedSoc hacks -- Trump has picked them as part of his bargain with McConnell and certain voting segments of the party, not because they are loyal to him.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:39 (five years ago)

pomenitul, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:40 (five years ago)

Again, this is not equivalent, but we just spent four years with a sizeable portion of the liberal electorate claiming that Trump couldn't have won the election by legitimate means

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:44 (five years ago)

Almost half the country is going to hate the president, no matter what. That's going to be normal for a while so we may as well figure out ways to deal with it.

As an unapologetic partisan myself, it would be disingenuous of me to say it should be otherwise.

I can see why in BidenWorld, there is a memory of a time where collegiality and bipartisanship reigned, and it was normal to extend an olive branch, especially since you'd see the very same guys at the Cosmos Club or the Gridiron Dinner or whatever.

Just as it was normal to say of one's political opponents "I submit that the honorable gentleman from the great state of Missivania is a vile popinjay, and perhaps even a scallywag." And then retire to the bar at Old Ebbitt and laugh over cigars.

We're not there anymore, and it won't work, but I can see why it seems (to some) like an adequate strategic move to at least try.
