"Mr. Barr has privately told department officials in the days since the election that any disputes should be resolved in court by the campaigns themselves, according to three people briefed on the conversations. He has said that he did not see massive fraud, and that most of the allegations of voter fraud were related to individual instances that did not point to a larger systemic problem, the people said."

I don't! I had a vanity 1% of equity and gave it back because I didn't feel right being an owner.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 02:57 (five years ago)

going back to politics, the overall Barr statement is fairly toothless when you read the entire article(s) (from any source), but I kinda hope the headline "BARR TO LOOK INTO ELECTION FRAUD" results in him getting harassed everywhere he goes anyway.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 02:58 (five years ago)

I mostly just want people to ask him for his thoughts about Space Relations.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:08 (five years ago)

regardless of whether anything's going to "happen", the optics of it are bad, it breaks a longstanding DOJ policy, and the results aren't certified yet. He stepped down as he clearly didn't want to be a part of that, but it's important to note he didn't outright quit the DOJ, which he probably would have done if he was severely wigged out by it.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:12 (five years ago)

I just wish I could be as casually dismissive of all this shit as some of you are. I don’t think the election outcome is going to change, but it is still terrifying to watch them even think this anti-democratic bullshit through out loud. And again, while it won’t invalidate the election now, it does further serve to normalize some pretty abhorrent moves for the future. I don’t know, I just don’t feel like laughing it off as mere rhetoric.

_What about the state?_

Good question! The state shouldn't be evicting anyone in our hellish world, no.

In the better world where all housing is social (either state-owned or communes or co-ops of somekind) or personally owned, we wouldn't be evicting people for failure to pay, obviously. In the event that someone was so loud (or whatever) it became a problem - which comprises what percentage of evictions? - then we're going to have to work up a system for how to deal with it! Perhaps after various processes of noise abatement fail, we'll have social housing for noisy people.

But no one should ever, under any circumstances, be rendered unhoused - which is what eviction in the here and now reality does. And if you get evicted in the here and now, no one should tell you not to fuck up the drywall or that you're a bad person for doing so.

I’m with you and thanks for the thoughtful answer while I admit the question was a bit flippant. Honestly, I lean to the belief that social/ state ownership of housing is the way to go.

Ape Hole Road (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:20 (five years ago)

but it's important to note he didn't outright quit the DOJ, which he probably would have done if he was severely wigged out by it.

It's VERY hard to fire a career prosecutor who has done nothing wrong. One reading: Pilger felt he couldn't approve requests to investigate fraud - which would influence the election - so relinquished the role; but he believed that people of integrity must stay at DOJ.

just to be clear, i'm pretty bummed out about all this shit and in kind of a glum mood because of the developments, even if I don't think they'll amount to anything.

ran into my first friends who believe the fraud shit yesterday. had to change the subject or I woulda choked someone

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:31 (five years ago)

Yeah I wouldn't say I'm so much casually dismissive as I am increasingly of a mind that the people perpetuating (or impishly refraining from comment about) this utter bullshit need to be [ REDACTED] with great swiftness.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:36 (five years ago)

impeaching barr would make me happy, in that it would show a commitment to principles other than 'whatever brings Democrats the most power'. although he hasn't committed much that's clearly criminal, barr's certainly flirted with impeachable offenses, in contravention to his oath of office. imo, investigations would be in order, once the next Congress convenes.

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:41 (five years ago)

I have had THE FEAR a few times in recent days as the various would-be machinations have unfolded. But it dissipates pretty quickly when I think about what they would have to actually do to try change anything. We all know they have zero evidence, and since we don't actually live in an outright authoritarian state at the moment, that matters. One thing to remember about even Federalist Society judges is that they are appointed for life, they don't owe Donald Trump anything and a lot of them probably don't actually like him. And the courts are all he has, he has no other avenues. I guess he could try to order his new Defense secretary to go in and shoot the ballot counters or set the ballots on fire, but I really don't think anyone would do that, either.

Plus, his legal fund is just another scam to pay off his debts. It's all totally hollow bullshit. Trump is as much a fake totalitarian as he is a fake everything else.

I'm still getting robocalls from the trump campaign asking to contribute to prevent the democrats from stealing the election

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:55 (five years ago)

The fear people are feeling is precisely what Trump wants people to feel, which is the best argument for pushing through it by any means necessary. Fuck this puling lame duck piece of shit. Everybody say it with me.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 03:55 (five years ago)

The only legitimacy he has at this point is that which we grant him. Remember the last four years, really feel it in your bones and then flush this turd with gusto.

Let me be clear: I will not vote to pack the courts & I will not vote to end the filibuster. The U.S. Senate is the most deliberative body in the world. It was made so that we work together in a bipartisan way. If you get rid of the filibuster, there's no reason to have a Senate. pic.twitter.com/g0fasdzVmt
