self-satisfied echo chamber sniping that's likely to turn off even those people who already like 90% agree with her. It's a lesson worth paying some attention to.
Sounds like you and the person you're quoting could do to pay some attention to that lesson yourselves

It’s good to know that you think a Black poster telling White posters that agree with him politically that he’s tired of being told that any incremental change that makes his life less dangerous is de facto bad because he’s not the right kind of Black person is juvenile and childish.

― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:51 (five years ago)
It’s just that there is a cognitive dissonance when progressive politicians have done excellent work to re-elect Biden and then people are criticized for enjoying the election of Biden because it will hinder progressive goals.
― Van Horn Street, Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:54 (five years ago)
look if these same progressive politicians do not end up being undermined by the Biden administration and Party apparatchiks I will be surprised and delighted and happy to admit I was wrong
― it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:56 (five years ago)
xpOK but this discussion is happening on the AOC thread partially because there was an immediate effort by some Dems to blame progressive goals for their congressional losses
― rob, Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:57 (five years ago)
(which AOC was pushing back against)
xp Just think it's funny to lambast people chatting on an internet message board for not airing grievances with and/or discussing political reforms they'd like to see in the US in a way that's as eloquent or "coalition-building" as someone who literally does it for a living like AOC does. So sorry I and others like me that've been suffering with pre-existing conditions under the inhumane and indefensible dumpster fire that is the US's "healthcare system" aren't as articulate or gracious in our appeals for things like M4A or examining the difficulties in passing a public option as she is.
The onus should be on the nation where injustices and inequality is endemic to get its shit together, not on people trying to survive to voice their displeasure on social media and online chat forums in a manner palatable to would-be tone police.

― Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 November 2020 18:14 (five years ago)
It's pretty amazing that milo and silby still can't see that almost no one here is excited about Biden winning so much as Trump losing and that most people simply want to spend 24-72 hours drinking from the punchbowl of schadenfreude before two leftist edgelords take a dump in it.
We have no power to make you not enjoy it. We have not told you, from what I can see of silby's posts not to enjoy it.
There's an ILX power of transference where criticism of centrists or Biden becomes criticism of... you. That doesn't come from the people doing the criticizing.
It's just blanket hostility to dissent. Even if you want to throw in something about repetition and cliches, I will once again point to a half million posts about Trump's evil over four years - repetition isn't really the problem, people with different views (that, internally, challenge yours?) are the problem.

So sorry I and others like me that've been suffering with pre-existing conditions under the inhumane and indefensible dumpster fire that is the US's "healthcare system"
I have a preexisting condition too. I'm for a single payer system. But I'm grateful a centrist like Obama was able to make some compromises and deliver an improvement on the Healthcare system, one that outlawed denying private health insurance based on one's health history. It's a very flawed system still, but it is better and I have hope it will lead to an even better one.

trevor, you can post/speak however you like. Just sayin': while it feels good to get an 'amen' when you're preaching solely to the choir, it doesn't do much to rally those outside the choir to your cause.

― The Bosom Manor Michaelmas Special (silby), Sunday, 8 November 2020 18:20 (five years ago)
No one is rallying anyone to any cause at ILX, except maybe supporting a new album and given the interest bleed at ILM maybe not even then.

I don't think all of this is posturing, though— I actually believe everything that I wrote. I get wanting to celebrate the downfall of Trump, I was also ecstatic yesterday.
But the center's habit of undermining the people who bring them their power is really wearing thin, based on much of what I have been reading and talking about with people here, including people at the pantry where I volunteer.
The election was won in PA by Black folks in Philly. In Arizona, it was won by Navajo tribes and other Indigenous peoples. Detroit (and Michigan), same as Philly.
And yet it seems like the spoils of these wins are going to white centrists who have spent their careers not giving a fuck about these populations. That isn't posturing, it's just fact.

also speaking to the issue at hand, I agree with this thing a Florida friend said on Friday:
"AOC’s public response to yesterday’s House Dem circular firing squad is exactly what is needed. It was disheartening to hear the right wing Dems try to blame progressive causes for their loses. The problem was not with the causes, which are popular. The problem was their own distaste about them, and their own refusal to defend or endorse them. Case in point: Florida’s ballot measure for a $15 minimum wage received more yes votes than were cast for either Trump or Biden, in a state won by Trump. Conservative Dems refused to associate themselves with a progressive cause that was more popular than they were. They can’t blame progressive causes for their own failures."

otm. It's possible Donna Shalala would not have won her race even if her opponent did not accuse her of socialism; but running for office should come from the impulse to help constituents, and the former Clinton Cabinet member and University of Miami president offered little but a name and a bullseye and her opposition to the Green New Deal and Medicare For All -- this in a district with thousands of rich libs, malnourished seniors, and uninsured workers.
