Such skill

I asked Newt Gingrich what proof he had of claims he made on Fox News today about poll watchers being blocked from observing. A spox emailed back: “When Speaker Gingrich made his earlier comment, he was speaking on the best information he had at the time.”https://t.co/K9Jz99xepa pic.twitter.com/MVA2dPi7Ej

Aw

Breaking on @MSNBC: NBC's Pete Williams reports the Supreme Court has issued an order in the Pennsylvania case, but it’s not what Republicans wanted. Justice Alito repeats the guidance that post-Tuesday mail ballots must be segregated, but it doesn't direct them to stop counting.

The margins are pretty thin relative to the outstanding uncounted votes in all four contested states that are leaning Biden right now, I guess it makes some sense that the networks are reluctant to call it just yet, but I don’t remember such an excruciatingly slow vote count like this in 2016.

Dan S, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:32 (five years ago)

My memory is that Sinema/McSally took longer than this, right?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:33 (five years ago)

Yeah, election was Nov 6, AP called it for Sinema Nov 12

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:33 (five years ago)

but the presidential election was called in the early morning hours of election night

Dan S, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:35 (five years ago)

TBH -- especially now that everything is clearly trending Biden's way in the remaining big four (NC I won't care about unless something gets much closer) -- I'm fine with the slow time. The end result is clear and by just racking up the numbers and putting them out there it just makes the obvious frustrations clearer among the loons.

And to give you an idea about how weird things are getting, I was literally amazed to read this. As a separate tweet about it said, "This is the Republican voter fraud zealot equivalent of Cookie Monster saying, “No thanks, me have enough cookies to eat”"

Everyone needs to calm down about voter fraud, according to **checks notes** Hans... ***checks notes again*** Hans von Spakovsky and J. Christian Adams. https://t.co/D2SnwdnoO8 pic.twitter.com/HWF1WsxTxY

The big danger out of the delay, even if Biden wins this thing, is all the Trump people freaking out and potentially getting violent, especially as people in his team encourage that.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:39 (five years ago)

Not in 2018!

CNN’s @kaitlancollins: Trump unhappy with his legal team. Wants a team of “killers,” not Rudy and Pam Bondi.

I get the sense he actually literally means killers tho.

I think the reverse is true, the delay gives them time to get used to the idea, and by the time it's officially declared, they'll have come to terms with it.

nickn, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:47 (five years ago)

i am always wondering how trump gets any lawyer to represent him, he always gets ones that don't know this one weird rule (a) Except as stated in paragraph (c), a lawyer shall not represent a client or, where representation has commenced, shall withdraw from the representation of a client if:

(1) the representation will result in violation of the rules of professional conduct or other law;

Yeah, I mean...keep in mind it's already the weekend here. If Things Were Going Down we'd be hearing about it on a Friday night. And fuckall is happening.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:48 (five years ago)

I'm really hoping that we're past the point where people need to be making emergency plans for what should happen in the event that t won which i am aware some communities were talking about a few weeks ago. There wasa fear that things might get very dodgy.

Stevolende, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:50 (five years ago)

At the risk of being glib, I do not begrudge anyone who isn't a white guy like me for making plans one way or another.

Did you hear them getting all wistful on CNN for Bush's legal team in 2000, Hadrian?

clemenza, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:59 (five years ago)

I dunno, I thought I saw something about the FBI intervening today or yesterday when some crank threatened a mass shooting if Biden is elected, or a news crews being evacuated due to a bomb threat, and one reporter in Arizona in hiding because the crazies thought he was stealing ballots and got his license plate. Maybe this stuff is always happening, if you look for it.

In lighter news, to quote a friend just now: "who would have ever imagined two men in their '70s could maintain an election for this long."

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 November 2020 01:59 (five years ago)

with the new tranch of votes it appears Arizona is going to be very close

Dan S, Saturday, 7 November 2020 02:05 (five years ago)

Nope. Trump missed his 60 percent target.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 November 2020 02:06 (five years ago)

New Maricopa Co. ballots (70k update) go 55%-44% Trump, but that's not the pace he needs to make up the 29k gap in AZ.

sure, but I wouldn't worry about Arizona

and for the hundredth time Biden doesn't need AZ in a worst-case scenario

but it would be so sweet that the state that to some extent inspired the republican party over the late 20th Century would flip

I thought Biden was gonna speak tonight.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 7 November 2020 02:14 (five years ago)

I'll say it: it's fucking bullshit no major news site will call another race. It's not fucking 1984 when people play by rules. We know where vote accumulation is going. Each day costs the winner a day of preparation for January.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 November 2020 02:17 (five years ago)

enh presumably they can prepare just fine without Wolf Blitzer's say-so

Phew, not tonight dear (I can go to bed)

We've learned that Philadelphia will have no further updates on its vote totals tonight.

This may essentially eliminate any realistic chance of a race projection in Pennsylvania tonight. https://t.co/cxxWgKvobr

Alba, Saturday, 7 November 2020 02:21 (five years ago)

Each day costs the winner a day of preparation for January.

Biden can do quite a bit of preparation without having networks call it for him. It's not like the Trump administration would suddenly start extending full cooperation if CNN, MSNBC and FOX declared Biden won. You know Trump isn't built like that and he will reject any request for cooperation for as long as possible.

Maybe it shouldn't, but it amuses me that heavily populated Alaska is one of the six states not called yet. Does this have something to do with snow, or is Palin in charge?
