Maybe this has been asked already: what is the point of a Georgia recount if Georgia's EVs are redundant? Is it an ego thing?

stake in the heart, also influences the upcoming Senate runoffs

ah right, yes that too

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Friday, 6 November 2020 20:23 (five years ago)

A Georgia recount keeps alive the narrative that Trump actually won. This narrative will eventually fail to deliver a victory, but it sets the table for the continuing grievance narrative of "take back our country from the traitors". Plus, it's an ego thing for Trump.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 6 November 2020 20:25 (five years ago)

CNN said it's only done when requested in Georgia. But those explanations make sense.

clemenza, Friday, 6 November 2020 20:26 (five years ago)

I thought that beyond a certain margin the Georgia recount actually cost either Trump or the GOP cash money so wasn't likely to go ahead if so. Did it fall within the n cost recount margin then.

Stevolende, Friday, 6 November 2020 20:27 (five years ago)

I saw that Georgia doesn't have automatic recounts, but a recount can be requested if the margin is under 0.5%, which it will be even if Biden wins every last vote. And the Republican secretary of state seems to think there will be one.

jaymc, Friday, 6 November 2020 20:29 (five years ago)

A full Georgia recount would also presumably have an effect on the Senate and other downticket races

There's also the John Lewis thing eating away at Trump. (Feelings about McCain aside, I hope Karl Malone creates some kind of graphic involving Trump and the ghosts of Lewis and McCain.)

The GA runoffs will be decided in large part on whether Republicans turn out for Perdue and Loeffler. How right-wing media digests Trump's loss will probably have a big impact on that. Interesting thread here from @rickperlstein. https://t.co/Ma8ULTsCbl

Big fan of internal GOP warfare but I don’t trust that Dan Crenshaw means that. It’s pure posturing to distance himself (insane) from a different insane fringe with 22/24 in mind.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 6 November 2020 21:19 (five years ago)

His antagonist definitely means it though, and this is good

I read every word.

Why are you “leading” with losing?

Our Republican base is sick and tired of weakness coming from Congress.

I’m doing exactly what the people of NW Georgia elected me to do.

Fight.

Just finished two pages in Perlstein's Reaganland describing proposed electoral reforms by Carter in 1977--vehemently opposed by the emerging New Right because, well, everybody would end up voting then--and you'd swear you were reading about the last week.

I manage our firm's LA office, and just got passive-aggressively called out for making a pretty benign but positive comment about the direction the election was going in my office-wide Zoom yesterday.

And so the fuck what. DJT is a total human stain, and his behavior would get my business - or any other - sued 100x over for bad workplace behavior. I am totally fine being on record as saying as much. Conservatives? Have a seat! Let's talk about stuff. But I'm done thinking about Trump. He can go to hell.

There's a big problem with the theory that anti-GOP trumper sentiment helps Ossoff:

Trumpism starts to look a little like stalinism sometimes, where no one is trumpist enough and everyone proves their trumpiness by accusing others of not being trumpy enough.

Runoff is going to be Jan 5. It'll be fascinating to see whether by that point Trump has any motivation to help Perdue. My guess would be no.

Georgian here. Attack ads against Osoff were already blatant lies and fear-mongering cranked to 11. I don’t see how he can overcome more of that.

We don’t need that party. Maybe a less evil conservative party will take it’s place.

We already have a less evil conservative party! Let's get a more humanistic one as the alternative instead, if we're wishing in one hand

Long answer: the networks are in a tight place compared to previous elections where it was accepted that when the outcome was apparent to experts, it was all but settled. A huge fraction of the population not only distrusts experts more than ever before, but they have been primed by the fucking President of the United States for months to expect massive fraud

tbf the networks primed the population by running the president's lies and fraud unchecked for a solid 66 months until 19:02 last night
