CNN reporting that people in the White House are managing the president's anger and frustration

Please, please, CNN, just say it.

You know how.

Come on.

Here we go

Sources close to the White House said some senior officials inside the White House and the campaign are beginning to quietly back away from Trump, in acts of self-preservation, as the returns in Pennsylvania and Georgia indicate the President will not win reelection. https://t.co/Pi50hRjavO

what does "quietly back away" even mean?

Why should the networks call? I half joke but this brings down the curtain on The Trump Presidency Spectacle and the attendant coverage and ratings and hate-watchings and etc. Ad rates are about to crash. Wring out everything while you can!

An image of Homer and a hedge comes to mind.

While I certainly understand the ratings angle here, it also gives Trump more time to whine and wheedle about how unfair it all is. Not that he'd shut up when it's called, but it would feel a little less like we are in limbo.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:45 (five years ago)

bingo:

A separate adviser to the campaign described Trump as increasingly isolated in his claims of a stolen election. "He is mostly alone here," the adviser said of Trump's claims of voter fraud.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:45 (five years ago)

Pres Keyes, thanks. Fucking called it. if I worked for the administration I would beg to be fired right about now, so I could say I had been a dissenting voice.

Oh and yeah btw the military has, proportionately, fewer white and more Black personnel than the general population.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 November 2020 18:46 (five years ago)

yeah the take that the networks have a vested interest in drawing it out supposes that we'll never hear from trump again after they call it. there will plenty of profitable trump-related pageviews to be had for years to come i think.

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:49 (five years ago)

In 2016, there were 7,788 military absentee votes in Pennsylvania, 5,203 in Georgia, and 2,677 in Nevada. Assuming similar numbers this year, it seems unlikely that those will make a difference unless it's *really* close in Georgia.

― jaymc, Thursday, November 5, 2020 3:38 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

I should note that many of those votes have already been received, anyway.

why isn't anyone calling it ffs. i have hard kombucha i cannot in good faith crack until somebody calls it.

One really easy way to test this in a fun visual way for all ages is to put him on a large chunk of ice, kick it out to sea and watch it drift away

I'm guessing networks are waiting on NV? Since NV and PA together put Biden over the top even without the two recount states or AZ

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 6 November 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

tbh "calling the election" is sort of an epistemic quandary, why bother until the secretaries of state all certify the results? or the electors vote?

all cats are beautiful (silby), Friday, 6 November 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

the larger issue here is that if the narrative is "count all the votes," you actually have to do it before you announce a winner. let it happen.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 6 November 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

at what point does the math become inevitable?

Short answer: when the officially designated electors register their votes in early December.

Long answer: the networks are in a tight place compared to previous elections where it was accepted that when the outcome was apparent to experts, it was all but settled. A huge fraction of the population not only distrusts experts more than ever before, but they have been primed by the fucking President of the United States for months to expect massive fraud, which same president has zero intention to acknowledge any outcome where he lost.

To the degree the media try to anticipate a loss for Trump before every avenue is closed to him, they will risk losing credibility with tens of millions of their audience. The outcome will be the same, no matter if they 'call' it or not, so why should they risk anything by doing it one moment prematurely?
